Squatch, I have been binge watching this D2 restoration over the weekend and was absolutely riveted to my boob tube on the big tv. I had a wonderful weekend by the way, a little too chilly outside for my taste so I holed up inside instead of freezing my ass off outside. I have almost all the outside stuff done before the snow flies so learning and watching you fix all this stuff was perfect. Thank you!

I never had any doubt that you'd get that straightened out. If you wipe the hot, soft solder with some steel wool you can smooth it out & get rid of any excess, then move the flame over it to get it flow for a smooth finish.

years ago, when I was a machinist, we had a project cutting graphite, and they requested we cut it dry, lots and lots of dust, enough to instantly plug most vacuum systems, So I took a cue from an old 9n tractor I had, and built a water bath filter out of 5 gal buckets... took some tweeking and what not, but I can say them screens and baffles are a major component to making it work, need something for the atomized oil/water to hang up on and collect the dust. While my system wasn't perfect, we did manage to finish the orders without having to clean out the vacuum more then once.

The finished product is beautiful, and a tribute, not only to the original design and manufacture, but the TLC that Squatch put in to putting it back to original function. That thing has more class and character now than any coat of new paint could ever give it. What is with the trolls and the Thumbs-down dislikes? If you don’t like the content here, why not just unsubscribe and spend your time someplace else?

Nice work. Thin metal can be a bit tricky to work with for sure. Here's a soldering tip that will help you feel like a pro in no time. Only use a hot enough flame to melt the solder and keep the heat on the work, not the solder line. As the surrounding surfaces reach the solder melting point, the solder will draw right into the joint. The biggest problem with soldering is being in a hurry and over heating the material. When I solder, I either use a propane or MAP gas bottle torch, depending upon how thick the material to be soldered, propane for thin and MAP for the thicker stuff. One other tip, use a wet rag to wipe the excess solder off and it will look professional every time.

Those are the best air filter you will ever get! In Kuwait there were areas of the desert with signs saying not to go past this point unless you had an oil bath air filter. You could have painted it yellow when you finished!

You did great. The fact is that soldering is not like welding. You have to use the heat in the parts to melt the solder, not the flame of the torch. Different skill, but you did really well.

Probably would have worked better if you had applied flux between the piece you riveted on so it would have sucked the solder into the joint. Looks like you worked a miracle getting that thing back together again!

Something to remember when ever you are soldering. The solder will be drawn to wherever the heat is. If you want solder under the big thick piece of brass and make sure you heat it up. Just a thought from somebody who helped his father fix radiators for 40 years.

Oh - a tip from the dovetailed metal plane making community (don't ask). When peining a rivet in tight quarters, use a round nosed punch. Very accurate, very controllable. I don't think you can buy them, but they're just a round pin punch that has met a grinder wheel.

You should preheat the brass flange to near the melting point of the solder. It will act like a big plumber's soldering iron bit ,and the solder will flow easily into the joint. Some resin flux would help too. Acid flux is corrosive and is only needed for untinned joints. The main problem with soldering with a naked flame is that it oxidises the solder (that's why the solder melts and doesn't flow into the pool) and everything else and makes all the cleaning and tinning pointless.

This made me think of a time helping my dad work on a D315 gen set. I dropped the air cleaner bowl to check the dirt level. Without looking I pushed my finger into measure the dirt, it felt oddly squishy. I then looked at it realizing I had pushed my finger through a dead mouse floating in the oil. I assume someone left to top off the air cleaner giving him passage in. After that I look before I poke anything.
