My grandpa was an apple farmer and he used to have a bunch of D2's - the orchard models. Most were 3U's but he had a couple of 4U's. He also had a couple of International TD 6's. When the ground was really wet, these were really the only tractors capable of traversing it back in the day. Grandpa used to collect tractors like you do!

Compared to most other Cat pony motors that a person sees on you tube, yours run better than 95% of the other ones! Even with the low speed issues. The diesel sure sounds good!

If there would not be people like you. Most of us would start these things wrong or let them neglect to the point where it's a one way ticked to the scrapper. I ran into the same issues that you described. People ramming the pinion gear in by force and grinding off all the teeth. Also letting the pinion run without oil is a sure death sentence. Very glad you took this topic up. PS: glad you got all the machines in the shed for the winter. Major progress.

Squatch: Thank you for addressing my question so thoroughly. I certainly appreciate the benefit of having a starting engine to preheat the main engine and bring up the oil pressure; also that you have a much longer time to get the main engine started with a gas starter engine than with an often weak starting battery. Short answer-- the pony isn't an afterthought and the pinion drive system shouldn't need more service than any other of the pony motor's systems.

Long term thought… Will a D2 with the wooden cab fit under your loft? Oh never mind, there’s a good high clearance end spot near your passage door. You guys think of everything! And quick work on that pony engine (seemed quick to us anyway). I love those little engines.

@squatch253 does the front-end or the rear end raise up from the torque when starting to move either forward or back and does that effect the clearance under the loft? I have watched how semi trucks raise up when they start moving. I am sure you calculated that in your design as well planned as the red shed seems to be but the question came to my mind. glad you have new storage to use as you need to.

I definitely see the advantage of a pony motor in cold climates where you live. Being able to warm the diesel up for a few minutes before the crank makes a lot of sense. Especially on units w/o glow plugs Even with plugs, the two small diesel tractors my dad had were tough to get going with electric start when it was under 50 degrees (though some of that was definitely our fault) Glad to see the snow! Smells like shop season

A couple of things that may help you and your viewers: Plug And Cap Set: I bought the CAT cap set and it covers most things. Harbor Freight has a silicone plug and cap set (Part Number 70792). The plugs are more like stoppers and since the plugs and caps are made of silicone, they are more flexible than the CAT plastic set. Good to have both. 300 Lumen LED Work Light: You were using the Hockey LED light (from Harbor Freight). That led light is rather dim and the batteries do not last long since they are AAA’s. Menards sells a LED “stick” which is brighter (300 lumens) and the batteries last longer since they are AA’s. They are cheap ($3.00 each or $6.00 per pair plus batteries). I still use a rechargeable light but it is nice to have replaceable battery lights (for when the power goes out and cannot recharge lights and phones).

I sure do agree. The pony start is a brilliant design, but many people can't be bothered to make an effort to keep them maintained or learn how to use them. Eternally frustrating when i see people crank the diesel with fuel on from cold or shut off on the mag...all kinds of atrocities 🤦‍♂️

1:19 early on i learnt my lesson the hard way, that you ALWAYS, clean the tank and passages after a carb rebuild. I was so chuffed with myself too. I'd rebuilt a carb all by myself. The next day, it was all clogged up again. My uncle laughed his derriere at me and probably smirked all the way through the rebuild fully aware of the mistake i was making.

Have to add one more comment. I think Dad and I definitely fell into the camp of not operating it properly at first. I was a little more familiar with bigger Pony Motors from our graders. All of them are very confusing when you're new to using them. They are also forgiving enough to work even if you do it improperly. Taking them all apart and putting them together gave us a very good understanding. 👍

I love the concept of a pull start pony motor. No need for a battery that you have to remove in the winter and put on a trickle charger. It is not bad to start and will not only turn over the diesel as much as you need but also warm it up. Not all the designs of these is perfect by any means, but I think some of the old designs were great.

Great work Toby! I recently completely rebuilt the carb on the pony on my D2 5U 6373 using a genuine Zenith TU Carb rebuild kit, however I found that the float bowl gasket must be a little thicker than the original causing the float to sit too high if set to the factory 1 and 1/8th of an inch. It consistently ran too lean (and sounded just like yours at idle) even with the idle screw and high-speed screw wound right in. It only came right when I removed the bowl and bent the float down to compensate for the thicker gasket. Hope this helps!

Always great to listen to a running machine, quite the stable you have assembled. It's a hard choice what one i like more RD-6 or Swamp Angle, I'd have to say the RD-6 by just a slight hair but both are great. I've always preferred the worn used look over the fresh paint myself. I put an electric starter on my D6-9U I went in the pinion clutch hole to do it, I know you like your starting motors but the electric has turned out good for me I use the tractor more because of it. I have a small machine shop and made my conversion, I still use the cat pinion and it works like it did originally and kicks out as the motor gains rpm.

I haven't had anything to do with those pony motors but I can see there advantage. Those indirect injection diesels are hard to cold start without heat or that contentious product in a spray can. A least the Caterpillar and International start on gas systems get the diesel system warmed up before trying to get it running. The Caterpillar system also gets oil pressure up before any strain is put on the engine so must help with the longevity of the engine. Also no matter what the temperature it will start where the ones converted to electric start will have trouble. With my 1957 HD6 I park it up if it is less than about 5 deg c because it's to hard to start, I'm actually surprised it starts easily at that temperature.

Couple quick Q. On advice from an old timer cat mechanic I always rotate the pony to just before the compression stroke before I yank on it. Have you heard of that? It seems to me you just thread on the rope where ever and pull. You mention briefly the little filter inside the float bowl. I have a couple where that's just gone and I use a in-line filter as I have not figured out what I could use to replace it.

My general procedure for rope-starting the D2/D4 ponies is 3 wraps around the flywheel, slight rotation to find the first compression stroke, then pull. I don't know if it makes much of a difference in how it starts, but I've found that I get a much smoother pull without that brief initial free-wheel followed by the sudden slam of compression. For the edge filter/sediment bowl issue, yeah those edge filter stacks are getting hard to find in good shape but one of my favorite work-arounds is to take a paper fuel filter element out of one of those in-line filters that you mentioned and fit it inside the sediment bowl, in place of the old edge filter stack. My only gripe about my pony start R john deere (I know it's not a cat) is the lack of a carb for the pony. The "mixing pot" (basically a single fuel screw in an intake elbow, no float, no bowl) is that you have to set the fuel mixture all the time. Outside air or engine temp changes, you have to change the mixture, or it'll either flood or be too lean to fire. Later ones at least gave you that control from the seat. Mines early so you have to reach under the hood...

The bigger the barn the more space you have to fill .there never big enough. My uncle punched me in the arm because i shut the pony engine with the mag . After that i alwas shut the fuel off . I was 10 years old . He spent about an hour on me doing hands on operation with the crawler power off .

I imagine there's a lot of people that have never had a good running working pony motor and therefore they don't care for them. I mess with vintage snowmobiles, much like senior. A lot of people malign the tillotson pumper type carburetors used on the '60s and early '70s machines, but often the problems lie elsewhere like leaking crankshaft seals, ignition system problems, etc. And then they monkey with the carburetor and make things worse. All my machines I go through and take care of all those issues, I run non-ethanol fuel and other than having to use a squirt of prime. If they've been sitting more than a few days or weeks, I can hop on any of them and I'm not afraid to go 40-50 mi by myself without problems. But if you try to take something that's worn out, been messed with and band aided by multiple hands, you aren't ever going to get something reliable that works right!

Senior knows those Tilliotson carbs very well, and cut his teeth rebuilding them when he worked for the local snowmobile dealer in the late 1960's. He's always had good luck with them after giving them the complete rebuilds they often need, but the one carburetor he never thought highly of was the old Wahlborough sometimes found on those 2-cycle engines - he's said that they had trouble built right into them lol ;-)

Hi Squatch, Listening to you and if buying a cat secondhand with a pony motor, properly the first question you ask the previous owner is how he started the Pony Motor to see if you would immediately purchase having to rebuild the Pony Motor and whole main motor engaging system you seem to say if they ignored the proper starting procedure. I always used to quiver and shake when I heard the crunching of gear teeth and listen to people engaging the main motor from the days when I was a Toddler as even then I knew that sound was not right.😭😞

Hey I have a question/ suggestion.. wouldn't having the entire concrete floor being covered (just your main stretch only) of old conveyor belts connected together be a little bit easier? Sure your system works fine don't get me wrong, just thought that may be a simpler and feasible solution in due time.
