Years ago I did this kinda work with a dozer. Same basic setup. I did however shorten the cain up considerably so that when pulling it had a tendency to pull the tracks deeper providing higher traction. Looks great with the old D2

My first heavy equipment experience was on a D2 just like the one on the video. I learned how to start it with the Pony motor too. It was an old machine and not maintained well. It was when I worked for a cheap water district in California. The pumps and the motors were so old, they should have been on display in museums.

Thank you for the great video. Miss the old cats with the pony motor. My dad had one in the 60's. Have yet to figure out what it was. Think it was a D-4. The kicker is that it had a cast iron grill. Have many fond memories of riding on it with him.

I used to have a D4 #7U that I picked up from the Army Corps of Engineers. It was a 1952 model that was in fantastic shape, but I sold it. I regret it now, as it was a lot of fun to play with. It had a ROPS and winch on the back. They had a metal plackard on the side with all the specs. Said it was 16,??? pounds. I just loved the sound of that diesel, and it had lots of torque for a non-turbo engine.

There is nothing like the sound of a Cat D-2 at work. The greatest small tractor ever built. Caterpillar’s mistake was stopping production on it and the other smaller tractors in the late ‘50s to concentrate on the bigger machines to be used in the mining industry.

Just glad you didn't get tapped in the back of the head with that chain. I have a pal that came in a snap of getting killed that way trying to move a 245 with a shot engine. A 980 was behind, then a 7-F, a 6-D and then my pal pulling on a lifting ring on the 6 with a 320. The ring popped off and ended up in the cab with him, chain and all. Broke leg in 2 places plus ribs. Not good but he lived. I just root them out. Get paid by the hour. Sharp little tractor!

Where does one find a hook like this? I have a handful of 6"-8" diameter stumps that were cut too low to get a good hold onto. Also have some root balls from old brush. Really don't feel like digging all the way underneath them.
@joewoodchuck38246 жыл бұрын
I realize chain might not do as well on the shorter stumps, but when the stump is long enough wouldnt a couple of turns of chain tightened as much possible with a clevis be better than the hit and miss of the hook?
@scottpecora3716 жыл бұрын
Had one thought when you were along side that log. I wonder if you had a piece of log that you ran the chain over then down to the stump so now you change the direction of pull upwards and the log rolls along acting almost like a lever . An if the log was oblong instead of round all the better, like a compound bow?

Just curious why you didn't push them out. I also have a D2 5U-17582. Not as clean as yours, it's still a farm tractor. I push trees out with the blade. Mostly sweet cherry trees (Bings, Vans, and Rainier's). The trees that give me the most trouble are around 60-100 years old with a deep, large root structure. Thanks for sharing your video, I enjoyed it.

You are correct Merlin. Very dangerous to pull with a chain, cable, or strap. All you have to do is see one of them fail once and you won't want to ever use one - unless there is no other option. That's what the blade is for . . .
