I stumbled across this installment of your saga of the reconstruction of Cat D2 S/N 5J1113 earlier today and spent most of the rest of the day watching your videos starting with the first video in the sequence through disassembly of the original engine block. You are an excellent and patient teacher and these vintage machines are fascinating. I used to enjoy very much working on various mechanical devices but am now prevented from doing so by my own health problems and caregiving responsibilities for my spouse. Videos such as yours are a huge comfort to people no longer able to do this type of recreation personally.

my first job (other than sweeping the floor) as a brand new heavy equipment repair apprentice (well before I actually signed up for apprenticeship) with a local contruction company...was to put a D-6 back together. It seems something had broken inside and got all ground up and went all through the hydraulic system. I was given some tools to use the books and diagrams required and a whole bunch of parts laying around it in boxes. I had good knowledge resources from my supervisor and other mechanics in the shop. It did my heart good to see that thing crawl out of the shop under its own power. Did a lot of learning that summer, and I went on to earn my Red Seal license. I really enjoyed that kind of work. Some of the gear they had was of the same vintage as your D-2. Cheers

Nice! I'm currently restoring an old crawler too. It's a Lamborghini from the 50s when lamborghini was making tractors before start buliding cars. I started from the back housing, pretty much the same as this D2. Steering clutches, brakes, gears, etc. I'm finishing painting tracks pads and chains in these days. My goal is to put the back end on its own feet before winter's comming, so i can work on the engine in during winter days. It's a very challenging project but very funny! I'm courious to see how you gonna procede on these pieces that i've done already. For me pressing out sprokets was the most difficult job ever... i've also broke one of the casting case during this procedure. Good luck on your D2! Greetings from italy :)
@paulmanson2534 жыл бұрын
Holy crow. You should video as much as you can. Jay Leno has a video on a Lamborghini tractor from California, but none of that included internal details. I would be willing to bet lots of people would be just as interested as I would. Hoping to persuade you . Who knows,it might be enough to buy a few parts. All the best.

@@paulmanson253 hi! They are not so rare around my town. I live just few km away from the currently lamborghini car factory in italy. The one that i'm restoring is pretty rare. Only 48 were produced in the 50s and as far as i know only other 2 are still alive. I don't have time to record and editing video. Is already a time consuming job that are taking a lot of my free time since 2 years by now. I have another one with rubbere wheels already restored, 1 of 205 produced. If you are interested you can find all detailed photos of the restorations on my facebook profile. There are albums regualary updated with all the progress :) just search my name on fb, i live near modena in italy. Let me know if you want to know something else about them :)

2 observations. First, I wonder if the guy that invented the flat bladed screw driver realized what a great wedging tool he was also inventing? Second, I've talked to old timers that told of tearing finals off D4's and 6's out in the woods in the 50's with nothing but hand tools, a site built log tripod and a chainfall! Can the drive clutches be removed rebuilt with the diesel motor still bolted to the transmission
@waynep3434 жыл бұрын
you need a cargo container.. a rolling dolly installed inside on bar stock bolted to the floor for the dolly to roll on with little flanged wheels.. or V groove wheels. some track built outside to match. with hinged or set in place pieces.. to bridge the gap where the doors open. allowing you to pull the entire dolly out of the container .. then slide in from the side to lift off pieces with your tractor.. then slide the whole thing back in.. this ends moving heavy stuff to get it out. does make mowing creative.. or hang a hoist rail from the ceiling with an extension outside.. so you climb over stuff.. hook the overhead winch to it and pick it up and slide it out the door. probably a lot easier and less expensive..

I've seen a "will it start" Video on a semi recently in which they also asked, how often did one have to press the clutch to actually wear a hole into the steel pedal with a leather boot, because that pedal was even worse than the brake pedal you showed, it was worn down to a semicircular remainder with breakouts around the edges.

The fiber clutch sets for the 1010 do the same thing. They get any moisture on them and there seized tight as a drum.
