Hi Squatch. I'm always amazed by the quality of the support and sales documentation Cat provided 'back in the day' to quote your phrase. No computers, no CAD, just good authors, superb draughtsmen, and great type setters. The amount of effort that went in is remarkable. So I thought I should remark on it!

I worked at a wastewater treatment plant and we had that type of fitting on our large pipe valves. It took a slip-on hose fitting on a grease gun that used a grease like wax. It would hold the fitting under enormous pressures. I believe steam trains used the same type of fitting.

That image of the traverse leaf spring reminded me of once asking the Caterpillar Historian when Caterpillar stopped installing these and only installed hard bars. They did not know.
@jeffsnider35883 жыл бұрын
Yes I had thought the main issue with the spring is trying to control a blade depth on a vehicle which has suspension, back in the 1960's I remember locals swapping the traverse leaf for a hard bar on the dozers. Many of these guys had cable units and pans they pulled but also dozer blades. Original cats were primarily tractors and benefited from the spring then someone maybe LeTourneau or Baker stuck a push blade on a crawler and the rest was history. In the late 80's and early 90's one of our Defense contractors tried to develop a full width front mounted mine plow which had a computer controlled terrain following blade depth adjustment. With the spring (torsion bar suspension) this task was virtually impossible. Down force from the blade with changing soil conditions and terrain would compress the suspension and make maintaining a specific depth a complex ordeal. Read about the "Grizzly" which was eventually canceled by congress. The replacement had a mine plow with scooter feet out front that maintained depth, all the tank did was push the plow. I ask the maker what happens when the scooter foot hits a mine and his answer was "install another scooter foot"😂 Industrial history really has some interesting moments.

I think when you build your new house you should design in some of those concertina timber & glass doors that open up the lounge and dining area to the outside so you can keep that D2 inside on a nice rug in the corner next to your tractors.
@christophermiller8333 жыл бұрын
On the Northern Island of New Zealand there is a nice museum on the once vibrant a Kauri timber industry they had there where they clear cut all the old growth Kauri trees. There is a gray D5(?) there, you can see the track cut marks in the concrete by the door as it was moved in.

Cat were indeed very generous with the shaft wear clearance of 50 thou. That’s 1 and quarter mini bananas in the French measuring system we have had foisted on us in the UK. The final shots of the kit of assemblies shows just how far you have got. Look forward to the starting engine rebuild vids !
@jameshodgson16093 жыл бұрын
Hi Squatch, Another KZbinr Kurtis from Cutting Edge Engineering Australia where they have fully embraced the metric system often uses ‘bananas’ for inches when giving an imperial comparison as for those not familiar with metric as a bit of a running joke. So much so that I think one of their US subscribers had some wooden rules made with bananas on them instead of inches. For us of a certain age in the uk we are familiar with both systems and use either as convenient. Hope this helps !

Wow! It is really coming down to being able to test the engine, trans, clutch’s, final drives, or are you going to wait till the tracks are on, and all tin tin and guards before testing the drive train. Imagine you will probably test the drive train by hand before testing with the engine. Seems like a month or two and you could be out for a test drive. Although guess that depends on how long it takes to put together the tracks. Hopefully you don’t have to rotate pins and bushings. I am getting excited to see the tri-build and see that diesel running.
