Negative comments don't bother me, the only ones I remove are the gatekeepers. "You shouldn't be doing that!" or "you aren't qualified to work on that!", or "you don't have all the proper tools to do that!". They don't discourage me, but they might discourage others. There are people out there that would rather this machine rot in the woods than some inexperienced person (me) try to fix it. I don't know why, but I ain't gonna allow it on my channel.

@@PacificNorthwestHillbilly those ones aren't welcome in the community either mate. It's not that this work gets done for notoriety or to compete with contractors for the work they do. We all do this kind of job to get another kind of job done mainly for ourselves. Maybe also a neighbour ? Without blowing the cost entirely on the job. With the machine having finished all the work it may be useful for, it's then possible to recover some capital by selling the machine? We improve our options by working and thats the way the world works.

My dad ran a D4 for years and years clearing our farm on Vancouver Island. It's cool to see the inner workings of the winch, which he used for pulling trees over (easier than dealing with stumps), skidding the logs out of the swampy areas and pulling us kids stuck in the mud with our tractors. Lots of memories about him and his D4.

After reading some of the comments I will pipe in. It’s a wonderful thing that you are doing. Old Cats are great machines built in times where people had pride in making overbuilt machines that were made to last. And be worked on. I fixed Cats fresh out of high school to cut my teeth on heavy iron. It’s a wonderful way to broaden your experience in mechanical skills. Looks like you have a grasp already in the art. Keep on trucking! It’s cheaper than most hobbies and you can continue to grow and feel pride in the results. The shaft guy sent me here and I am impressed. 😎

Usually when installing safety wire, the wire is doubled up and twisted together between bolts/nuts. Also, it might be beneficial to make (buy) your own after market anti-fouling (fairleads) cable guide rollers to ensure the cable can't climb up to the outer spool edges you spent all that time repairing.

You asked for comments on the subject so. I learned safetywire from Naval aviation (helicopters) techniques in the 70's. You've got the right idea on your routing pattern but you only ran one strand. Safety wire should be two strands twisted between bolts. There's a whole lot of twisting with safetywire, that's why they have the built in twister in safetywire pliers. One strand goes through the hole and the other goes over or around the bolt/screw head (depending on the situation). It can be a little tricky trying to twist the pair the proper amount between bolts so that the tension is maintained between bolts, but you get better with practice. Tip: make fine adjustments to the tension between bolts by twisting more to shorten the wire or untwisting a little to lengthen it before you release the grip with the pliers.

Just remember, your winch isn't gonna fall out of the sky if it goes wrong. Plus it doesn't vibrate anywhere near as much, or at as high a frequency as Aircraft do. If one of your fixings does decide to come loose, that wire will hold it and stop it lunching the rest of the thing.

Your safety wire procedure is basically correct. I am a licensed aircraft mechanic and safety wiring is an important part of any reassembly processes. You are using the correct safety wire pliers. The safety wire should be stainless steel. Always thread the wire in a clockwise direction from one bolt to the other. It might even be ok to use Locktite especially on land vehicles. Right now all aircraft repairs and part replacement call for the original safety wire. You are very thorough in your procedures. Following the manuals,as you do, is a major part of aircraft repair as it should be with any complicated piece of equipment.

Just my two cents on safety wire installation. I was always taught to go between two bolts. So instead of going around all the bolts in a circle. You go from one bolt to the one next to it and cross the wire. Just the way I was taught. Also makes the wire tighter. And if one breaks it doesn’t mean they all break.

One hour well spent. From time to time it's just fine, it helps keep the flow to all that was done. You're a dedicated man. I certainly appreciate the work and am well willing to spend the time watching your work. Over all, great job. It's still fun to watch you overcome issues as a man working solo and without a giant shop full of all the goodies from the Snap-On truck. Cheers.
