Hey Warren, a better way to cut those sprockets off would be mount a center to your table. Drop the sprocket onto it and make a mount for your torch or plasma cutter and turn the sprocket under it instead of monkeying around with that circle cutter. Watching the video it seems the sprocket spins fairly easy on the table so I would guess it would work without even adding a bearing. Hard to explain but I have used this method for cutting large fan hubs out in the past and it works well and you only have to set it up one time seeing it looks like you have a few of these to do.
@falksweden3 жыл бұрын
Exactly, and the cutter/torch could be mounted to a magic arm letting you place it where you need, and then just rotate the material.
@frankdavi24463 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same thing, seems to me if you were going to be doing a few of these I would get an old truck spindle and hub assembly and build a "Lazy Susan" and then of course cut the way you are explaining. It's easy to sit back and offer suggestions but Warren is actually doing the work so it would be up to him to actually decide if it would be easier and more productive.
@markcleveland37903 жыл бұрын
Add my vote to Neil's method. Just setup a vice on the workbench to hold the plasma cutter or torch in and after setting the sprocket on a centering pin or hub, you can position the vice to set torch tip where you want to cut and just spin the sprocket around. Probably said the same thing, but hopefully added some clarity. Enjoy your knowledge, stories and rants.

When I worked in the shipyard years ago as a Hand Tourch burner. I had a piece of torch Hose about 6 ft long that was smaller and more flexable. Hook that to the heavier torch hose. It made it more maneuverable when cutting. It makes a big difference. I still do that today on my personal set of torches. Just a suggestion. You can get that smaller more flexible hose..I used to have Wheels that went on your torch tip too. Great Video Sir... One more thing if you preheat the sprocket where your cutting it cuts better plus burns off the paint too. All just suggestions.

Hey Warren, couple of tips from an old steel burner. 1. Try to preheat a lot before the cut, helps keep it smooth and moving faster. 2. Make a pierce and the waste and then clean your tip. The pierce is where you clog the tip most likely. 3. Store bought circle cutters all suck because there is no way to get a thumbscrew to cinch on a smooth rod. I made mine by tacking a hose clamp on one end of a threaded rod to wrap the torch tip. For the center you can use a big punch with the shank drilled for the threaded rod. Secure the center with nuts on each side of the punch. Nice thing is you can make a few sizes. 4. Start a circle cut in the most uncomfortable wrapped up position and unwind as you go. Less likely to hang a hose unexpectedly. Oh and go with the plasma….;). Good job gettin er done bud.

Why not set the torch static and sit the sprocket on a large bearing and just turn the sprocket with your hand and let the torch do the cutting .Just a thought,,,

Have replaced the front bearing hub assembly on Ford and Chevy truck. Replaced them in pairs and one of them is still good. Then use this bearing hub assembling for a turn table like your talking about. A pipe welders roll out wheel with a lathe chuck would be easy set.

My dad has a customer at his business that brings him dozer sprokets every couple of years to machine the sproket off of the center, he chucks them up in the lath and cuts the sproket off of the center. He usually machines them for a .002 interference fit. The customer finishes the sprokets themselves with a welding fixture that my dad made years ago.

Airgas ordered the wrong one. Flange wizard does make a unit for a plasma. Hypertherm makes one as well. Much more expensive, but it works well. I have sold them to a few customers!!! Most gas shielded flux core is reverse polarity, if slag us hard to remove it usually is a voltage issue, also keep your stick out consistent. If you are using self shielded flux core most of those wires are straight polarity!!!

You don't have to have the tool on the sprocket to measure 12 3/8. Set it on the bench, adjust 12 3/8 dead nuts and weld it/braze it permanently at that setting. Forget the friggin thumb screws. I am pretty sure you are supposed to heat the diameter of the sprocket where you intend to. Set torch flame to heat, heat sprocket up, then set to cut mode. Also, try rotating sprocket instead of rotating torch. just an idea. Good work Warren. The tool is a piece of cheap $hit. Get a better one. You made a nice disc that fits in the sprocket nice and tight. Bolt something in the hole you drilled that accepts the tool and eliminate that loose small disc. If you have several to do, it will be worth the effort. you can't keep screwing around with that bad design.

You really need to make your own jig for cutting those hubs. A shaft to sit the hub on, spin on your bench with a holder for either the cutting torch or plasma cutter. I prefer the plasma cutter over the torch anymore. Just leaves a much smoother finished cut. Brass wheels will clean those welds right up. I've also never been a fan of flux core wire, leaves a mess and by the time you get it "dialed in", you've finished the welding. LOL Stick welds all the way. Thank you for taking the time to make your videos for us to enjoy and watch. As usual, great video as always. Cheers :)

My preferred product was a dual shield 7100 Ultra. It runs like solid wire but has a flux core also using CO2 shielding gas. It would give great penetration, smooth welding, and a hard slag coating like 7018 would leave. The slag popped off easy. I ran a lot of it over the years. Don't know what it is called these days but most welding supply houses will have a comparable product. My single-phase Miller-Matic 200 would run 0.045" easily. The 3 phase welders in the shop ran 1/16" all day long. I never used the self-shielding flux core wire. It was not really available 40 years ago.

Hi Warren, is it possible to make a ring that fits in the other end of the tapered hole of the sprocket wheel, mount that ring on a (height)adjustable bolt that's welded on a piece of metal (beam). In this way you can turn the sprocketwheel and it does'nt move aside. At another place on the (beam) you can make a little platform to put the torch on and fix it such a way that the distance to the centre of the sprockethole is fixed, but still can lifted up to take the flame tip away. Then you have the torche fixed and can turn the sprocket in a way that you always have the precise distance to the centre of the sprocket. At last, you could add two supports underneath the sprocket outer ring, so the wheel stays flat and the seperated ring does'nt fall down when seperated. Nice and big jobs anyway.

GOOD JOB :) make another round metal center the same size as the magnet one and weld it to the center hub that you have, That magnet hub is to Clumsy, use a hose clamp to hold the center cutter to the torch handle at around the Gas valves, I made my own torch center cutter with a big nut that fit the cutter head, welded a rod to that nut, made a slide with a sharpened rod on a piece of pipe that fit over the metal rod, drilled a hole in the pipe for a small nut for the T handle lock bolt and a hose clamp at the torch handle, I also welded on a piece of metal on the metal rod on the other end to fit the torch handle so the cutter is spaced and stationary at the torch handle assy. works great, Also make a L Shape Pedestal on the edge of your welding table with a hold down clamp on it to hold your Gas hoses / mig welder cable off the welding table. use some velcro to strap the hoses up, make it so it will swivel at the table. Just my 2 cents worth :) Retired Female Fleet Equipment Mechanic / Welder fabricator with over 50 years of Experience

I've seen those hole cutters at the welding supply houses. I'm poor ,or maybe just a tight sob. I just take a piece of 1/4" x 1" flat drill two holes 1 for the pivot 1 the diameter of the torch tip, the radius of the circle I want. Use a small hose clamp on the torch tip so it dosent slip out . Tac weld a nut to the plate for the pivot screw in the pivot bolt and get to cutting. I also like using a smaller tip than recommended and compensating with higher ox pressure 40+ I was cutting 1-1/2 plate the other day and had a small kurf and and a machine quality cut. I think you have to waste a little ox to get a good cut.You're done buy now , might help someone else though.
