Curtis at CEE does surgery in a state of the art hospital while Isaac is like a MASH unit doing surgery in the field. Kudos to both!

Kurtis, for the most part, does only two things: line boring and hydraulic cylinders - mostly for the mining industry. It's a highly regulated environment with only a small handful of metal workers that have the equipment to do it, niche industry. Commercial equipment has to be maintained in almost 'like new' condition, this means repairing stuff that would otherwise have years of service life left in it. It's not surgery though, it's dull repetition, the same thing all day, every day. He is opinionated, this makes him popular on youtube, but it doesn't make him good.

This type of repair is like an iceberg. The finish welds look like some easy passes that shouldn't take any time. What's not seen is the thought that goes into "how the heck am I going to fix this". Followed by the "sneaking up on the fit up". Then, the final prep and holding everything in place. Yeah, then, just sew it up. Isaac makes it look just so easy. The man is a true artist. A sculptor chips away what isn't the final piece. A welder has to chip even more away and then replace the material removed. Artistry, I say, artistry!

I’ve said before that I think Isaac has to have some engineering background. I’ve seen videos where he improves on the original design, so the failure can’t happen again. That’s more than skill. That’s using his brain.

When Isaac says "I'm not saying this is how to do it, it's how I'm going to do it" you should pay attention. I pick up stuff from his videos all the time on how to approach challenges, devise a plan, and execute it and know when good enough is good enough.

Beautiful work. I just did the samething on my 1960 backhoe. Only I do not have a torch i had to use a 4 1/2 inch grinder. I just got it running and was trying the hydraulics out for the first time, and whoever worked on the machine before I got it had put the bucket arms on upside down, I broke them both in half. I used 7018. You can not tell they were broke.

I thought maybe you would start with the mig flux core and then switch over to 70-18. Those were pretty tight bevels and not a lot of base material. Again, you showed us that slow and steady is the best approach.

When they only call you for the bigger and more difficult repairs is when you charge accordingly. 👍 I have a few customers who use me to do the difficult repairs that others don’t want to mess with. I’ll do them with the understanding that if they’re looking for “cheap” then I am not their guy.

We rarely repair these types of things with out line boring it and sleeve the pin hole put when we do i always weld it about like you did then old guy i worked with for years Lee he was a Hellva hand taught before u remove the back strap place holder run the rosebud over the hole thing and stress relieve it and the pin will always fit back in nice then remove the back strap

That and using a hammer or like Issac does with the aor hammer to relieve the heat is what I was taught. But I've seen them still crack out after doing all that and post heat with blankets to let it slowly cool down.

Issac I worked with a very capable offshore welder years ago who answered the phone / page system with " metal surgeon here"! Well without deriding him at all I know who I would want putting my leg back on :-)
