My boy and I were just starting to fish wire traps. We have a lot to learn on how to set them out. Appreciate all the help. I love watching your videos. God bless you and yours keep them coming. I am from Jennings Louisiana we use cheese for bait. We are fixing to start fishing the river 18 to 22 foot, I’ll have to try to pay attention to that thermocline. We don’t have anything to tell us where it’s at in the water column. Thank you much and God bless.

I would help a fisherman who had 7 hoop nets on the Missouri river outside of Williston N.Dak. He bought a 5 gallon bucket of stink bait than started making his own stink bait and boy did it stink and you cant get the smell of your hands after washing with soap. Go out about 3 days after setting hoop nets and would have more game fish to pick out and throw back than there was catfish and why using 7 nets. A super market in town paid him $2.50 per pound and sold it a fresh caught river catfish with senior citizens the biggest buyer. My boss at work told me catfish only need a scent to follow and it doesnt have to be a stink bait scent to draw the catfish to the bait. He said go and buy the cheapest bars of soap you can find which costed us $0.10 cents a bar of bathroom soap. Put 10 to 12 bars in each hoop net and no more pucking while doing it because no more stink but smelled pretty and like roses on your hands afterwards if that alone no stink was enough to be a great bait to be using. Went from using 7 hoop nets to be checked and/or emptied every 2 or 3 days to only now using 2 hoop nets instead with only catfish in the nets and no game fish at all to be tossed back which averaged 2 55 gallon plastic cans 3/4 full of catfish each after emptying the 2 hoop nets. Had to be back at the hoop net within 20 to 24 hrs or couldnt roll out the nets into the boat without breaking all the rings plus to dang heavy and would be jammed packed full. Was best to check and empty the nets in about 12 hours because if waited till 2 days the net would be completely jam packed with catfish and unbelievable they are able to get inside net when packed to the capacity the net is able to hold and no room to spare. What a change for hoop net fishing and with cheap bait that smells pleasing and very clean but also healthy on the skin...haha. Theres alot of very strong current where the nets where placed in the river but soap bars dont get water logged and weakens the scent emitted like stink bait does being in the water but instead the soap bars only soften but never weaken loosing scent to be emitted down stream in the current but instead will send more bait scent down river as the bars slowly dissolve in the river current and theres never a weaker or less scent being emitted from the bait bag when soap bars are used. A catfish only needs a scent to have a trail to follow up river to the source of the scent flowing down river from bait bag inside of the hoop net and doesnt gave to be of a food(stink) type of scent as commonly believed is best. Try it it will blow your mind what you catch in numbers of catfish because the soap scent travels very far down river for many miles continuously without an interruption in scent being released from bait bag but sends even more amount of scent down the scent trail already traveling down river ahead before the soap bars tend to soften and more being washed downstream by the currents flowing over and around the soap bars. Used an ice house thats not being used in the spring, summer, and fall with a deep freezer and rented ice machine for $90 a month which people who knew we had one gave us $5 to fill a cooler of ice going camping or fishing we had so much ice along with a double basin sink and counter and a weight scale inside that would be removed to use for ice fishing on the winter. A one piece stainless steel 3 deep basin sink hooked to water source along the outside of mobile home and ice house. Paid 3 teenagers $5 per hr to remove the head, all fins and guts than skin the fish with only tail fin attached. Sit in the bar till got a call they where finished than we rubbed the stomach cavity with nylon brush and washed fish inside the ice house sinks than added ice and fish in 1 gallon zip lock bags put inside cooler of ice than transport to super market and walk out with empty cooler an around $250 dollar check 2 times a week. The small catfish are best eating and not oily like large catfish. Any remaining fish because we caught so dam many using soap was put into freezer with water and fish in zip lock bags for if and when the 1 super market called wanting more or would charge $200 for 2 hours of deep fat frying cat fish to the demand needed to the bars who charged patrions $2 per person for all the catfish you can eat between 5pm - 7pm advertised in advance. Had cleaning station(temporary ice house) & processing inspected by the state and approved with a license to be able to sell legally. What a differance good sweet smelling cheap bars of soap could and did do for our catfishing amount caught and less work, time spent, expenses with more enjoyment and profit. Try it and see it might blow your mind like it did ours.

Always amazed when the bait used is almost the same size as the target fish caught. As sportsmen, don't you think one should let them grow a bit before you catch them?
