In this video, I did some kayak catfishing in an effort to win some money. It was a rough day of fishing but I caught a nice flathead and a big blue cat to get the win.

In Oklahoma Flatheads prefer live bait. Blues will eat both. Hard to catch a flathead here on dead bait.

Couldn't have said it any better. My biggest catches and wins have been on spots I had faith in. Most in the last hour of a tourney or talking friends into staying just 5 more minutes. Of course if the gar are bad I'll move quickly! Congrats on the win but do I need a yak? I'll be down there in two weeks mostly targeting stripped bass and working my way east near the Smokey's. Anyone on here going after paddlefish(spoonbills)? Worth the effort or no? I missed the KY season up here.

I like fishing from the bank on the Ohio where a boat with twin Nitro powered 502 stroker's is a friendly "wave" hello! We have barge traffic here in Cincy. You feel the GUSTS of wind coming of their wakes. illegal to use more than two poles per person for game fish and one bait rod and single hook only, but it doesn't matter if you're in a boat or on shore-you're already snagged. Santee cooper rigs and braid have been looked on since I was four in the 80's. Braid snags and you have to cut it and it kills fish/tangles you up. I wish you wouldn't use that crap on here. I've placed first in several tournaments on the Ohio, only one from shore expect twice, that soon as my names seen or I'm seen people leave/refund! Shut down 8 in one year and was "asked" to help officiate or run clubs before heading of to college. Yea I have a Masters in Fisheries, two Bachlor's and several associates in Natural Sciences, but I was already published for what you Tennessee boys did for everyone enforcing a one catfish over 34" per day limit. First time my class shocked and seined an entire 4 acre pay lake (I can't say, but they moved have multiple lakes now and it's still the most popular.) removing all non-catfish. Out of the 100,000's of K's of #'s they stocked we counted less than 30 flat heads, less than 20 channels and a few huge but dying blue catfish. The Ohio River was across the street but Ohio boys, right? Friend and I went to have a smoke down an atv trail. I felt like destroying them all after what we saw. Thousands of dead catfish stacked up 30 feet high having been burnt and re-burnt all summer/fall. We were removing any food sources that's why they stock so much at these mud pits. Huge issue till this day and it's a few guys/women making a ton of money off fish that take over 50 years to reach those sizes or more. I've fished pay lakes in Tennessee and NC, but even the one you could bet at were carp lakes and common carp are the smartest fresh water species, followed by flat heads. You griped about the law but not many years later areas thought fished out were filling with large blue cats-flat heads require mostly live fish and can take decades to reach even 30 pounds. That wasn't explained well but @OSU we knew and studied your fisheries. Blue cats are native to the Ohio River and large, deep flowing adjacent tributaries. Natural they were spawning with channel catfish late 90's-2004ish. F1 hybrids grow fast, fight hard and live long. We should have implemented a breeding program to help, told you those facts or sent more brood stock when the threatened status was lifted and they became a game fish in Ohio. Ohio followed suit as did a few other states. Fishing here used to be fantastic if just for a short 20 hours. I've fished the area in your last video-BEHIND THE TOWER! Blue's congregate in swift water in front of concrete structures and anything that blocks current. The more active feeders are always on the up river side while larger fish in water that deep are at the back of the holes. You just started fishing I can tell-no fisherman walks away after catching quality fish right after dusk! You learned what i was told when I started catfishing-can't catch the were they aint-Stick w/ that spot you know holds fish-keep a diary of temps,clarity, moon phase, catches, local banter you'll get it. Soon-no depth finder even. I never bought one and most guys who were winning year long leagues last year just use the GPS for marking way-points. Soft baits work great until the water hits about 75 degrees. Small baits work great you'll see, also hook large fish and hardy fish through the mouth/head. Crappie are forced to breath flapping their gills and naturally will swim upwards do to eyesight. Gill clipping's nothing new but watch it, channels will bleed out in seconds and you were close! Wasn't a shell cracker prob a green sunfish or one of millions of sunfish hybrids-shell crackers look similar to rock bass. Loose to Santee rig! I use hollow sticks/branches as floats or millions of things around the house. Balloons work great and won't fall apart like styrofoam. I've opened a lot of fish that had floats stuck in their guts, they pass ballons, even tye a hook on flat heads and strippers nail them, plus you can add a glow stick/led. Wall mart sells casting bubbles in 4-packs the largest is a great sub also. In about a month, you'll be after flat heads when they're shallow in heavy cover-have fun w/ that! small bluegill/bream are key-they don't have to be ore than 2"'s as long as they're struggling gasping for air flat heads prefer smaller fish and can hear them gasping and struggling via sensory organs better than larger bait. I see you found heads of fish work-they due almost everywhere for lots of species year round. More warmer the water gets the more a flat head will pass them over, than there's the gars! Pick up and move! Work that area behind the two pilings and tower. The point coming out there helps siphon bait out of the adjacent channel in higher waters and less snaggy-free tip. Now next time you hook into a flat head over 40#'s pull up acre/reels and let it take you for a ride! Why else would you be big game fishing in a yak unless you were trying to reach unreachable areas, wink wink.
