Check out A Whiter Shade of Pale performed live in Denmark 2006. There's also a live version of this song as well as Conquistador which is a real rocker.

I heard this song in 1977, I was 12 years old. I really fell in love with this band in addition to the Who with the rock opera "Tommy". Procol harum are the initiators of progressive rock with " a water shade of pale " of 1967 as well as the Moody Blues. Gary Brooker was an excellent singer and songwriter. RIP Gary.

John Lennon stated that their song "Whiter Shade of Pale" was his favorite song of the 60's FWIW.

Say Hey John. There's not a lot of songs about ghost ships, but this one always brings goose bumps for me. I saw PH perform this as a 5 piece band many times at Fillmore East and on the New York college circuit in the late 1960's and early 70's. It was always epic. Loved your reaction. I see many commenters suggesting the Live in Denmark show 2006 with full orchestra and chorus: Watch it, it's great. Also, 'A Whiter Shade Of Pale' from the same concert is just as good as it gets.

You got it bro, nice reaction. Salty Dog is simply an amazing and beautiful piece of music...... you used the word elegant....... totally appropriate. Nice to see young folks who can appreciate some of the more extraordinary music that came out of this period of time.

I consider "A Salty Dog", the album, a masterpiece of the ages in rock history. The title song, and the final song "The Wreck of the Hesperus" are two examples of some of the best orchestral rock of all time, bar none.

Thanks Arnie, great suggestion. I was the one who suggested the other 2 P.H. songs John mentioned. Great band, I put them in my top 10 for sure. And of course wonderful reaction from John as always.

Good to see you appreciate this song by my favourite band of all time. This is a great album perhaps only second to their Home album but i wouldnt argue about it as i love all their albums, Grand Hotel or As Strong as Sampson are two songs for the future but thet have so many great songs, they can rock too.

When/if you get to Robin Trower, everyone will suggest "Bridge of Sighs" which is awesome, but "In This Place" off the same album is the deep cut real gem for me. Robin is still playing today and if you want to see a live track I suggest "Too Rolling Stoned" live from the Rockpalast 2005 and watch him still getting it at his age.

This is a truly great song. The sea voyage is a metaphor for our journey into death. The key lines are A sand so white And sea so blue No mortal place at all. You might appreciate this, which has a similar theme: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l5zNeKaBr6lpqMU

why do all these people misprononce Harum? Plus it's Gary Brooker, not Booker!
