When Ritchie Blackmore was inspired, he was unstoppable on guitar... Ronnie James Dio (R.I.P.) was a legendary voice 🤘🤘

The modern reactors tend to make it all about Dio ignoring Ritchie to an extent and the rest of the band, Cozy was a monster drummer, I had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times, lovely guy, in the 70's and 80's we went to see Rainbow because it was Ritchie on guitar.

One of my favorite Blackmore solos so much confidence and attitude, Ritchie is one of those players who's personality manifests so clearly in the phrasing.

Rainbow only had a few songs that really got any airplay in the 70s. "Man on the Silver Mountain" had the most popularity for the Dio years. A lot of their songs were not radio friendly, that is why Ritchie Blackmore made a direction change to become more radio friendly and more pop sounding like the band Foreigner. Dio didn't want to go in that direction and Rainbow brought on Graham Bonnet who produced their highest charging single "Since you Been Gone". Dio went on to join Black Sabbath after Ozzy was removed from the band, which started a new great era. Rainbow is a great band and has gone through 5 lead singers, all great in their own way. Dio, Bonnet, Turner, White, and Romero - However the Dio era is my favorite and is the reason Rainbow is one of my top 5 bands.

The wizard made a bunch of people believe he could fly and had them build a tower for him to be able to take off from up there. I take it he promised to take them to some wonderous place once the task was accomplished ("Where is your star? Is it far? When do we leave?") Many of the enslaved believers died in the process. When the tower was finally finished he climbed up, but instead of flying he plummeted and died. The believer/slave realizes he has wasted 9 years following a fraud. As his sole purpose of living is now gone, he's trying to come to terms with this realization and wonders how to move on. It's obviously an allegory and open to interpretation. People following some cult is the most obvious one, but it can also be interpreted as a warning of blindly following someone's promises, or even of living the dreams of someone else instead of your own in general.

@@JohnSlopReacts That live concert is higly recommended from me as well, Dio was often at his best live. Personally from that concert i would recommend "Kill the king" which is a more up tempo Power Metal song and "Catch the rainbow" which is a very dynamic and beautiful song.

"Why have I not heard of Rainbow?" Beats me, especially this legendary line up on this legendary album. The band originated, when a band called Elf, fronted by one of the best rock singers ever, Ronnie James Dio, supported Deep Purple. When Ritchie Blackmore, guitarist for Deep Purple left, he reformed Elf as, Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. Both Stargazer & A light in the Black - & you're right, the latter song is a sequel to the former - formed side 2 of their 2nd album, Rainbow Rising. The line up is: Ronnie James Dio, vox; Ritchie Blackmore, Guitar; Tony Carey, Keys; Jimmy Bain, Bass; & yet another rock legend, Cozy Powell, drums. Due to Blackmore's exacting standards keyboard players & bassists continually came & went. Eventually Dio left to replace Ozzy in Black Sabbath before forming his own band, Dio, while Powell left to join Michael Schenker in MSG. Deep Purple reformed in the '80s with Blackmore on guitar for a while. Unfortunately any chance of this caliber of Rainbow making a come back will never happen. Ronnie James Dio died in 2010 & Cozy Powell was killed in a car crash in 1998, with artists like Jeff Beck, Rainbow, MSG, Whitesnake & Brian May on his career resume.

He states something calls him back a light in the black which very well could be a star, In the end he says I see a star, possibly intimating that the whole story may start over with him in place of the wizard. You Should definitely check out more of Dio both solo and with black Sabbath, he is considered one the greatest metal vocalists and highly influential to many who came since, also check out Richie Blackmore with deep purple, child in time is a very interesting song that is emotional and just draw you in, highway star is another great one but don't listen to it while driving, that song has caused many speeding tickets

I could easily make out Dio´s voice if i were to choose between several thousands of voices, he really sounded that unique in my opnion. So if you have heard Dio before im a bit supriced that you didnt recognise his voice.

Never take these early Rainbow tracks too seriously! During the Dio-era of Rainbow (1975-78), Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio wrote fantasy lyrics about magic, snakes, fairies, witches, and dungeons and dragons. A Light In The Black was just another example of that. It defined what we now call power metal. In interviews that Dio did in the past, he was not too keen on this particular track on the Rainbow Rising (1976) album. Blackmore was in charge of Rainbow. He decided the lyrics, lyrical composition, and melody. Dio did NOT have a say in anything. It was Blackmore's band! When Blackmore decided to change the band's direction from fantasy neo-classical heavy metal to love and romance pop rock, Dio was out! A Light In The Black was probably one of my favorite tracks on this album. Great song!

Take in mind that the mastering of this album is one of the worst! bass is totally lost and the studio master tapes have been lost since 1976. But still its a kick ass track, preceding Maiden and the rest of NWOBHM

Never heard of Rainbow? That is like hard rock 101. Plus you couldn't tell it was Dio? Man, you really need to listen to more classic rock. You must be really young. This album came out before I was even into metal or hard rock. You must listen to that growling shit from the Netherlands. I still am blown away that you didn't recognize It was Dio. I am blown away you didn't catch that. Go listen to kill the king from long live rock and roll. You really need to educate yourself. I was embarrassed for you. It's not a sequel. Period I have played this song for numerous people on youtube, and the most common response I got was "That is the best solo I have ever heard" it's not Y. Malmstein over the top. It's fast but melodic. Yes the wizard fell because he was arrogant, and thought if the tower were high enough he could fly. He used slaves to build the tower, and it is one of the slave telling the story about building the tower, and what they went through. Light in the black is not connected to stargazer.

The original "LA Mix" had more bottom end, but the record company wanted a more midrange-centric mix to highlight the guitar. They were wrong as that remix sounds pretty bad. To get the LA Mix version hunt for the original U.S. CD.

Unfortunately, this excellent album was very poorly recorded and produced, the bass guitar is practically inaudible ... It should have a new mix and mastering.
