Welcome to my Airline Fleet Evolution series that presents the evolution of airline fleets. The series looks back at an airline's entire history year-by-year, and all aircraft types operated by the featured airline will be showcased. Each type is usually pictured with the livery that was in use at the time of their introduction.
Cathay Pacific was founded on September 24, 1946 and commenced operations with passenger and freight services from Hong Kong to Sydney using DC-3 aircraft. The Swire Group became a major shareholder of the airline in 1948 and managed it alongside Australian National Airways (later absorbed by Ansett Australia). Cathay Pacific expanded its Asian network in the 1950s, and it became the first foreign carrier to fly to Osaka in 1960. Jet operations began in 1962 with the introduction of the Convair 880M, and the first wide-body aircraft, a Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, entered service with the airline in 1975. Cargo flights began in 1982 with the founding of Cathay Pacific Cargo and the purchase of a secondhand 747-200F from British Airways. Cathay Pacific gained fame from flying the world's first non-stop polar route from New York to Hong Kong in July 1998. As of May 2020, the airline has suspended most operations due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
