Here's a video I actually made back in 2008, a tribute to Hong Kong's World Airline. The music is Barry White's "Love's Theme," a piece Cathay Pacific once used in an ad campaign in the seventies.

I’m a retired First Class Purser of Cathay Pacific and this was our theme song. We play this on top of descend while the plane glides down for landing. Nostalgia at its best. Thank you for this wonderful tribute video.

My dad used to fly on one of those Lockheed TriStars for Cathay back in the end of the 70s, early 80s. I was very proud of him for what he was doing and always felt privileged when I was allowed to go with him on some of his flights. Those were the days and I miss them so much, as much as I miss my dad who passed away a few years ago. He loved flying so much... Even in his seventies, when he could not pilot an airplane any longer, he was as excited as a child, when he had the opportunity to fly. God bless you dad and thanks very much for uploading this video, it has brought back some fond memories.

Know the feeling, my old man was FE on jets preceding the Tristar. It was a wonderful experience sitting in the jump seat of many a CX flight; seeing the Checkerboard over the captain's shoulders before making a late hard right turn to line up with the runway surrounded by water! What memories as a kid, never take anything for granted!
@johnfells68373 жыл бұрын
Your dad was probably check and trained by good family friend Bob Howell. He has moved on but l still occasionally visit his surviving widow in Sydney. Keeping in touch still gives me a connecting thread to a special time in my life, never take any part of life for granted, always cherish the memories.
@M-M-M-M3 жыл бұрын
@@johnfells6837 You are right, nothing is granted, especially nowadays. I remember a few of his fellow pilots from the time he worked at Cathay, though only by face or their given names - I was only around 7-8yo at the time. Frank, Keith, Bob (at least three of them), Nigel, Phil...though I may be confusing some of the names with those from his later life. It all seems to be an entire lifetime ago, which it was, all taken into account. Hong Kong, going to school at Repulse Bay, eating dim sum in Wan Chai and so much more... A stereotype, but still I must say once more: those were the days! I haven't been to Hong Kong since 1989 or 1990. I know it has changed a lot and I'd like to keep it in my memories as it used to be back in those days when we lived there.
@johnfells68373 жыл бұрын
I've been back a couple of times in the past 10 years. I walked to Checkerboard Hill. The bright red and white paint has all but disappeared and there's weeds and trees growing thru the cracks in the concrete. Also paid homage to their first plane, a DC 3 named Betsy inside the Hong Kong Science museum. Such nostalgia. If you want a cracking read about the formative years of Cathay, get your hands on Beyond Lion Rock by Gavin Young, l can't recommend it enough. Good to hear from someone who also appreciates what a special period it was, Cathay and Kai Tak were synonymous with each other, both so unique at a special time and special place.

The opening clips featuring the Convair 880 and the Boeing 707; I spent many hours as a young kid in the cockpit jump seat of those early Cathay jet burners flying from Hong Kong to other parts of Asia and Australia. I never missed the opportunity to fly Cathay Pacific whenever I travelled to Thailand, Manila, Hong Kong or any of my destinations in the Middle East. Excellent service, great food, awesome comfort. There was one stewardess, Marnie, who I often had in first class from Hong Kong to Bangkok. She always had the time for an excellent chat and a cup of excellent green tea. I wonder where she is these days? I miss flying CT because of the superb service and genuinely kind flight crew. Very classy airline. Thanks for the memories.

I was a child when this music was used for the Cathay Pacific film. HK seemed so glamorous and attractive. The city lived up to all expectations when I eventually went there. How the ads resonated with me! When I first went overseas many years later, I flew Cathay because of the ads which had appealed to me so long ago! Indeed, Cathay remains my favoured airline whenever it is practical to use it. Again, because of the 30+ year old ads!

You're not old--you can still do it! Years ago (1986) I was accepted to the US Navy's Flight Program. I really wanted to be a pilot but because I wore glasses, I could only be an RIO or B/N--although I chose to remain in the US Merchant Marine and had an awesome career, my only real regret in life is that I didn't attempt the flight program. But I did get to visit Hong Kong a few times in my career (SS President Johnson and SS President Taylor).
