Thanks Mike. We built an ICF house in Florida about 10 years with spray foam in the roof assembly. The termite company that we used failed to do the initial treatment and we have a bad termite problem. They’ve “eaten” through the 2-pound foam. Crazy! I’d love to see a video on this topic and I’m sure folks in southern climates would really appreciate it, too.

Long time roofer here. Sometimes I have seen two vents placed exactly across from one another on a pitched roof. Looks nice however, during wind and rain or snow one vent will crest a vacuum at it’s across mate and literally suck the rain or snow into the attic space. Drive around Any town and you will see this. Cheers

Building my own home someday soon, I hope. No matter the size or cost of the many homes I've owned over the years, there were bozo mistakes somewhere. My goal is not self satisfaction. It's not cost reduction. My goals are to build something highly sustainable, low energy cost, comfortable, functional and NOT to lowest cost possible. For cost, I simply want to ensure I get what I'm paying for. AFAIK You can't ensure any of that with a dozen hands between you and the finished product. Thank you for putting the work into these videos to educate us consumers so we can make reasonable requests of our skilled trades and achieve reasonable outcomes together. Thanks for the video Mike! I was indeed one of those guys trying to drill holes in the structure of the dormer that you showed an example of- to try and carry the ventilation up to a ridge vent. I had nothing but problems with ice damming and leaking. I ripped down the pine and spray foamed and the problem went away.

@@AGClaymore Hi there PE Islander in Canoe Cove. Cool! What I learned about why cold climates need a vented roof is to prevent ice dams. I have revised my plans to have a double roof. The first roof with sheathing only is not vented but then I will be placing insulation on top, rigid foam, with 2 inch high boards spaced 16oc to form an air gap, and then another sheathing for roof. The boards will extend out so that I can make the eaves/soffit making sure they have vents. Joe Lstiburek points out that vented roofs are for high snow loaded roofs that would have ice dams formed. It has nothing to do with protecting the shingles from overheating, which was what was originally thought until research proved otherwise. Lots to learn eh! Love that! I find these videos most informative. One question: Looking forward, say 20 years when my shingled roof needs to be replaced, and they find some rotten plywood under the shingles. Yes, they shouldn't be rotten, but... Things always happen... Now the foam insulation will need to be removed too. The removal and disposal costs could be quite excessive. Has this been considered? Thank you so very much for all these videos. They are extremely helpful and insightful.

Wow, this is great detailed information....the more I watch and the more details you point out to ensure they do it right with the roof soffit, it seems this is a high cost project- which I have not even looked into yet. Getting a reputable company that knows what they are doing is important. Open field for customer rip off since most customer may have limited knowledge on this....

I can not believe more people in the industry are not following your channel. My question now is how to make code enforcement people accept your levels of spray foam meeting the R-value they are requiring. They only look at the thickness of the insulation not the performance of the different type of insulation methods. What do you suggest to address overcoming the “R-value only” requirement they require.

That is being covered in video 2 of this series; but even that will not solve it completely. Long term the spray foam industry is fragmented and needs to unite with 1 voice and lobby to get the rules changed. Since they have been made against us or without our input. Maybe that is why I am really here....??

Great series and information you provide. If closing in a porch roof in the south, 4/12 with 2 x 6, at 38 minutes you show blocking off the recesses to the outside. Then you can spray 2" of closed cell ( in the 5 1/2 cavity ) and then put up bead board or sheetrock ? The porch is 12 x 16 unvented roof, I can't get anybody to even come out and look at a job this small.

Looks to be a pony wall, on top of the top plate on that far wall it goes from about three and a half or so 4 ft not quite 4 ft down to nothing as what we call it when it goes down like a ramp, a pony wall is just like the homemade ladder two pieces of plywood laying parallel side by side spaced out about 18 in as you take another piece of lumber to before what have you or whatever size you're using parallel board spaced out 18 in you want to cut a third parallel exact same size bored, chop that third board up into completely 18-in steps to be nailed to the two parallel boards spaced out 18-in centers apart and you have a homemade ladder that's what a pony wall is but you put the 18 inch bridge blocks cut off blocks on the inside of the parallel running boards and nail them from the outside to where you could still use it as a ladder but it's just a different type that's the pony wall that was my job over the garage you need a pony wall you need a pony wall if you want to vault your ceilings and raise the wall to make a higher pitch in any of the bedrooms I used to have to put pony walls around master bedroom and then you put your two before 2x6 whatever you're using on your stick for your tuba sex will be a thicker installation than a 2x4 giving you a better r value home rating energy star spray foam insulation is always the best you can heat the structure with candles my favorite special was place clip the tail of the raptor for the ceiling you will nail that board from the raptor on the ceiling equally spaced completely around that room attached to that pony wall sitting on top of that top plate and then you have to put a board nail to that board that you nailed to the raptor and the other end attached to the pony wall all the way across the room to the other board that you have nailed to the rafter and attached to the top of the pony wall on the top of the top plate of the wall across the room straight across you just need a little flat area to place a piece of sheetrock something to run your can canister for your lighting ceiling fan something durable enough if it's a ceiling fan it must be sturdy enough to hold that ceiling fan from flying out of control and breaking off the ceiling and dropping into the bed with the children or the bassinet or whatever on a warm day you may have the ceiling fan going and children may turn the ceiling fan on how is it going away we go safety first cold inspection always a mandatory must before you can go on you must get the green tag if it's any red tax you must complete everything during punch out you have to punch out is when you go back and check over everything make sure all the wing walls for the washing machine for the beside your stove for your cabinet areas in your kitchen or dining room or den or bar you must put a little small wing wall something to enclosure appliances in and then you have a wall right there that separate breaks up that little area Wing wall in the washroom slide your appliances washer and dryer dishwasher sometimes in refrigerator in the kitchen sometimes according to the blueprint just something for that top ceiling joist to rest on to be able to attach that top feeling joist 🤔🤳🏾✨🤴🏾👶🏽👸🏼✨

I can't wait to finish this series... Love it. 18 yr carpenter here in Michigan finally building my own home. I like spraying the roof deck, but i feel the cost difference for entire house would be prohibitive for me. Just speaking ceiling, Whats the avg cost difference lets say between blown in vs spray foam? I really don't see any negative to foam besides cost. Also what about fire spreading prevention in attic space? Is that a negative of insulating roof deck vs ceiling? Thanks!

Great information. What view do you have on Rockwool? I put Rockwool bats in my 4 inch cavity (1914 era house) and put 2 layers of 1.5 inch Rockwool comfort board on the exterior with the seems offset vertical and horizontally for a total of 3 inches exterior insulation, I also installed a rain screen/ventilation cavity over the exterior insulation before the siding was installed. 4 inches in the cavity with 3 inches on the exterior for a total of 7 inches.

I'll never build another house with a cathedral ceiling. I will do a 'shed' style roof as it's simple and affordable to build, but I found the intense amount of heat trapped at the top of the cathedral ceiling to be really wasteful. It's somewhat mitigated with the convection heat of a wood stove, but just seems like a huge waste to heat all that unused space. I also had snow coming into my attic in Regina through the soffits. 1976 built house where they hadn't even insulated to the outer edges of the attic. They just went into the attic hatch and shot blow-in as far as they could and moved to the next house. Be very careful buying a 70's house as they were just slapping them up willy-nilly.

Love it!! Will be building a large garage/living space building in Oswego County NY this year if the materials prices return to something like normal. Full closed cell the entire structure as described in the vid. Will also be using some unconventional wall framing techniques to hugely reduce thermal bridging and air leaks.

It all makes sense, but what about moisture that does get into the attic. Do you just rely on whatever venting of house you have? If it doesn't condense, is it okay to just be moist up in attic? Saw a video where the guy was talking to a foremost expert and they said something about a small vent at the peak with a metal shield on the outside at the peak for moisture. Is that because they are talking about down south where it is very moist and humid? Could you do something like a gap at hte peak but with insulation that moisture can go through, and a vent at the peak?

How does this compare to a climate like Texas where it is hot and humid much of the year? Contractors will use close cell foam on the roof deck but have small ventilation ports on the soffits around the house. How is that even beneficial if the point is to make it a sealed/conditioned space?!

@@SprayJones Oh, I know! ATSM does engineering reports and specs for pipe and tubing used in electronic assembly clean rooms. Like the lady in the movie said-"It gets complicated"! Why I said I might need to do this one more than once- lots of material I believe will help me get where I am going- not as an installer but as a consumer of a product not well regulated here at all. The complication isn't your fault- the material just isn't any kind of simple and the tech route is the only way to get there. I'm thinking it behooves me to know enough to see the BS when it gets passed out- your my ticket to that. FR

I have a few questions, sir. First, the more I spray, the more Irealize that my method of attacking a house might not be the most sound. On a new construction, what do you spray first? Walls? Eaves? Id like to get more efficient about my plan; where im going to start spraying, and what my path should be to get the entire thing sprayed quicker and more efficiently. Secondly, one of the most arduous tasks when spraying a retro is having to crawl down to the eaves, stuff them and spray over them. I would love to see a video of how your team sprays retros, (do you start at the peak and work down? Or do you go and stuff every eave and then bring it all up?) and your method of stuffing and spraying eaves. Third, All I ever recall up to this point is you guys spraying closed cell. Do you guys spray open cell at all? Because I think another video showing the best open cell spray methods and helping installers understand the attitude and temperament of open cell would be helpful. You and i both know that there are two completely diff methods when it comes to open and closed cell. I live in Florida, and 7 times out of 10 im spraying open cell, and im determined to master spraying beautiful foam. Could you help? Thank you so much. @@ryalsackjon3020 We do not spray down onto drywall. Watch the video on this subject found in the vaulted ceiling playlist. Start with what is ready and what is the most difficult while you are fresh. Leave easy areas for last. Work where things are warm and dry. Have a helper prep while you spray elsewhere so as to not waste site time.... The answers you want would be pod-cast material in 2022.

We have a vaulted living room ceiling with 2x12 rafters (12 inches o.c.), 6-8 inches of fiberglass batting, an air space for soffit-to-ridge ventilation, and covered in drywall. Rafter ventilation extends along a continuous roof pitch (6:12) to the attic above the upper bedrooms and bathrooms on the upper floor. I want to remove the batting and add spray foam insulation. Do I need to maintain the vents above the living room ceiling, or can I apply spray foam to the underside of roof deck above the living room?

You have to be careful that if SPF is added non-vented that you leave an alternate avenue for the upper attic to get feed-in air. So treat each space like a stand-alone space and vent or block off accordingly. Make sense?

Yes leave empty. Have been doing that for 16 years. Just have to re-train your brain.

NO, many times the authors give little stutters like that to be in keeping with studies that are on going but not complete. For instance "vapor retarder" or "vapor barrier". Until the report tests were completed in 2008 for vapor barrier of SPF most engineers or architects call it a vapor retarder...

I've watch the r-value video, so my understanding is two inches is good in the wall. What's the best practice for the attic? Is it still two inches? Or four? Thank you Mike for the great information. I have watched the entire playlist for cathedral ceilings. We have a project coming up on recently purchased 16 x 40 cabin in northern Michigan where we want to open the living room to a cathedral ceiling. Can we spray closed cell foam in current rafter bays ? 2x4 rafters 16" oc. We plan on finishing the cathedral celing with drywall and possibly decorative wood like t and g 1x8 pine. Will uninsulated face of the rafters cause a problem? The current shingle roof is in excellent shape so we dont want to replace it at this time.

@@lori9423 We have completed the repair and improved on some of the framing. We have about 2 days if plumbing to do and a couple of days for electric. We Installed new windows. Ceiling is open to the rafters. We schedule closed cell foaming after inspections. We will verify with the inspector that filling current 2x4 rafter bays will pass for the renovation.

I am curios about the spa room in your video as I am planning a similar room myself, was there any other vapor barrier coating applied on top of the CSF and lumber? Some of the research I have done indicates that one is needed in a pool or spa room due to the constant extremely high humidity, warmer indoor temps and the push towards the cold dry sub zero outdoor air. I believe the theory was eventually enough moisture would migrate through the spray foam and framing lumber to cause problems at the roof deck.

Not on a spa or pool room. Freezer yes. I have done pool and not tub rooms before and not had issues. Precautions should be taken to the construction style and extra steps taken to allow them to be well sealed at transition.

The first drawing shows "humid outdoor air enter roof" Also says " Humid air condenses on underside of cold roof sheathing" Our winter air is very dry unless there is a rain event. Hello Tony, at 34% RH all you need is 17 C of variance between the air temp and substrate to have condensation. RH in Canada in Jan or Feb can be 29%. But we still have condensation, in fact, frost will develop because it is so cold the moisture is freezing immediately.

No. Plywood can be relief cut and removed. It has been done before. Plywood needing removal is very rare with SPF.

I'm working on getting job quotes from spray contractors in south east texas-hot/humid. I have a cathedral/vaulted roof style. I've installed zip system sheathing on the walls/roof and exterior foam on the walls and roof deck. One contractor told me that to use closed cell inside the house would cause a moisture issue since the wood cannot dry to the exterior. Is there any validity to this?

Have attic we finishing out, ceiling will be 9 ft and have r38 over ceiling, in the cathedral angled ceiling looking to do polyiso 4” in the 2x6 ceiling bay which is really 5.5”. We have soffit and ridgecap. Should we block the soffit and ridgecap and put the polyiso right againstthe roof deck and then add 1 1/2” more foam board then can spray foam seal gap around the foam so its air tight.

@@larrytinnin3357 1. I recommend a designed, balanced and sized system. This is covered in video #3 2. Even with all the short comings you have mentioned the home will equalize naturally into the attic space. Temps are 1-2 C off the thermostat. Humidity in line too. The argument is that we do not ventilate the floor joist areas, yet seal them up with drywall. 3. I have seen extra vents create more issues for CFM delivery when not sized properly, so this comes back to point #1. Hope this helps.

Mike, while i agree with your videos, point of view, physics and the like, I believe something would still need to be done to 'ventilate' the hot attic air, whether it be a cold air return (which then asks for a supply air outlet) or other. Would you not agree? Clearly, in a cathedral ceiling application the air void is minimal, but with a large 12/12 pitched roof, the volume of 'stagnant' air could become quite large, possibly leading to mould (which would now be integral to the home).

Do not agree. We live this. So video # 2 is all about cathedralized attic spaces. The attic equalizes on its own via convection air movement within the structure. The attic in the summer is usually 1 -2 degrees C of thermostat temp. We have had some people install thermometers in the upper attics and main floor and this has bee shown 100% accurate. There is no stagnant air in the attic. How do you move air between floor joists and within wall assemblies that are hollow? The principals are the same.

I just got quoted around 7k for about 700 ft of spray foaming my open roof rafters (explained as a hybrid foam) but sounds more like open cell. This is for a single-story low pitch hip roof due to a current Vaulted ceiling project. Seems high? I am in Columbus Ohio

I'm not clear on something. Let's say you live in the US Midwest where you get really hot humidity where it can get really hot in the attic area of the roof. Does the spray foam in the roof keep the attic from getting to hot or it doesn't matter because the spray foam would prevent any damage that may other wise occur if a roof wasn't properly ventilated?

Good product but many issues: wiring and changes, window changes, ordering, lead times, storage at site, need a crane, connection joints can be weak, need good site workers, not free to make changes on the fly, still need a foam installer for other areas.... Just to name a few. I have rarely seen a SIPs person not want to hire the SPF guy once they weigh the costs.

Lets say i have spray foam roof my roof is leaking so they take off the Shingles and notice my roof sheathing is rotten and need to replace that section... 1) how would they lift that bad part of the roof sheathing without disruping the spray foam... 2) how would they achieve air tight seal by replacing foam (nail down) Sheathing ....
