I finished a Cathedral Window quilt for a customer and was asked how I did it using the sewing machine rather than by hand. I know there are many ways to do it, but this is how I did it. I hope you enjoy. If you're just looking for the machine sewing part of it, that starts at about 16:00.

That was brilliant. Nicely paced and easy to follow. HWMBI (He Who Must Be Ignored) has hundreds of neck ties he no longer wears since his retirement so I'm going to cut them to use in the windows. I doubt he'll even notice ha ha. Compliments to the camera man too. He caught all the action and kept it in good focus. Thank you.

I've watched a ton of how to videos on making a cathedral window quilt/pillow. Yours is the only one that shows marking the diagonal lines with a marking pen and sewing along that line. First I tried the method of folding the points of the squares to the center and then joining the squares by sewing along the crease line. That seems to be the most popular method but I wasn't completely satisfied with my results. I then tried your method and I feel I got a better result. My sewed together squares were more accurate. So I thank you for taking the time to make this video showing an alternative way of doing this. It's how I will be doing any future cathedral window projects.

This is a really great tutorial! Thanks so much. I am currently making a baby quilt in a different Cathedral Window quilt method (all done with 3.5" cut squares) and I am loving it ... your method is more like the traditional hand sewn blocks and I really like it too. I might give your method a try for a pillow.

This was very well presented. You make it seem quite doable. Before I ever started quilting, the two blocks I was drawn to were flying geese and cathedral windows. I've made lots of flying geese, but haven't attempted the cathedral windows. I think the stitching order of sewing down the curves has me intimidated. Nice video.

My Great Grandmother made one for everyone of us that was named after her. But I was the last one and I did not get one. So she told me how to make it but I don't remember the sizes of the background square and the color square. She did everything by hand for all of the quilts. Can you please tell me what sizes you used for yours?

@cherylp.3347

See the video on ‘ the sewing channel’. She used 2 1/2 inch squares I believe. I find it works better as you aren’t folding over the coloured square as well as the white edges. Then you won’t have the problem of some coloured pieces popping out that you have to trim later. And also, you can use those precut 2.5 “ squares if you have them. Im no expert, I’m just beginning one and researching the best method that works for me.

When making a large quilt do you make a row the full length of the quilt and then join it to another strip the same length until you get the with you want?

If I wanted to make a quilt would I use the nine block segments and then attach them all together at the end? I figured if I made 16 those that would be a 70 x 70 finished quilt. Am I correct in thinking this?
@rwquilts

I think you may have to make more then 16, maybe 5x5 or 25.

What sizes of squares were used in the all hand made quilt? My Great Grandmother told me when I was a lot younger than I am now. But I have forgotten what she said. For some reason I want to say the big one was 8" × 8" and the color ones were 2" × 2". Can you tell me?

I’ve been researching the best method on KZbin videos to do my own quilt. On ‘ the sewing channel’ she did a lovely quilt. I think she said it was 30 -40 yards of just the white fabric ( 360- 9.5 “ squares) and 360 - 2.5 “ coloured squares to do a quilt 85” x 89 “. It’s a mammoth project but what a beautiful keepsake.
