His parents are so supportive. The mother is hilarious. I think that this sketch shows that the people are good people and love their son no matter what. I like the fact that when others find out that he is gay, they don’t hurt or mistreat this man. They want fashion and decorating tips. Lol. He stands up for himself by not volunteering to do these things. I loved the sketch. The people may not be rich, but they are smart, kind and loving. That is worth more than gold.

@@bm4114 In my opinion, the value in sketches like this is not pretending like this is reality, but in showing people (particularly people who are not gay or possibly even homophobic) how EASY it would be for this to become reality. It's like showing a hypothetical of "What if you were actually nice to gay people?". It is demonstrating to people who oppose gay rights (or are just mean to gay people) "Look, society wouldn't crumble. You can treat gay people with respect and still have a decent life yourself. Nobody gains anything from your homophobia and everyone would be better off if you just didn't do that." If every piece of media was "accurate to reality"- i.e. filled with homophobia, etc.- homophobes would probably just feel even more affirmed in their opinions because all of the media they consume would show characters agreeing with them.
@bm41142 жыл бұрын
@@madeleine61509 my reply was not about the sketch, it was about the original commenter’s fantasy that the sketch reflects reality, or that this sketch should be what reality looks like. But let’s talk about the sketch. It’s for straight people, as you say to “demonstrate the world won’t crumble”, but it sure does pigeon hole gays as a certain thing, decorators and makeup artists, and clearly it is making the gay guy uncomfortable, as he is not one of those types of gays. You see the people in this town are so clueless about anything gay that even when they are being “open minded” they’re still a bunch of idiots harming a gay person. Sure the sketch is a fantasy and a joke, but as a gay person it’s not the fantasy or the joke for me. Marking his coming out with a series of stereotypes about gays and we’re all supposed to laugh and feel good. Can’t help but feel like this sketch is for straight people who just don’t get it, and probably never will. Listen, and I’m sure you already know this, but if a gay person comes out to you, don’t ask them for decorating advice unless they are a decorator and you’re paying them. Just my perspective and I wouldn’t dare tell someone else they should agree with me, gay or straight.

This is too real! I am from a big close family that I pleasantly describe as "shirefolk". I came out to my mum but not my family. NOT because I thought they would hate me....but more worried they would treat me different and forget I am the exact same. But they didn't thank god. Hell my mum acted how the mum did here....I had to put my foot down and be like "Nothings changed mum! I like heavy metal, I like cage fighting, I still like nerdy stuff, I ain't camp, I just like dudes"...she gets it now :P

I love how she says “You’re a… a WUUUUUT?!” at 1:17 🤣 And “Do these turn-ups work with these boots?” at 4:38 had me in pain laughing when I first watched it when it originally aired.

This was the first sketch I saw of Catherine Tate, and that was a good couple years before I started gettin into Doctor Who, or before the revival even happened. And then I just happened to see this sketch while watching reruns of the Catherine Tate show, and that’s when I realized who this was

My very best childhood & life-long friend is from Belfast & gay. We met at an international foster care conference in Canada. He eventually left Northern Ireland for London after his life was endangered by IRA members who suspected he was "different." He now works in the UK Parliament & I incredibly proud of him. I can't wait to send him this video clip... before asking for some fashion tips... LoL! (My friend isn't known for being fashionable.)
