The overlying joke for the sketch is that stereotyping gays as being into _feminine_ things, even while not being judgemental, can be viewed as just as offensive as a lack of support. At least that's how I read it.

The setting is deliberately evoking the times of 'The Troubles' in Northern Ireland. A time of hardline attitudes on both sides, whether Catholic/Republican or Protestant/Loyalist. There were political murals marking territory and people in both communities serving jail time for various terrorist offences. The communities at the heart of the conflict were particularly dogmatic, hard-faced and uncompromising and 'the other' was demonised. This parody is genius. Especially as it's deliberately non-specific, so could be either side. The accent just adds to it it, lol. A place and period renowned for intolerance, displaying pure acceptance. :)

very well put - this is pt 1 of 2 parts, in this first one I'd say 90% Protestant (the obvious accent inflection, Dad is modelling a British battle tank, boys watching English football), Part 2 though they have a Catholic Priest - plays to all audiences beautifully as a metaphor against intolerance

Fair enough, but I wouldn't call it non-specific, as the music in the final scene sounds like 'The Sash my Father Wore', a Protestant Orange song about the Battle of the Boyne etc.

Yes, she was his very companion of course. She was the perfect companion for David's Doctor. They both have such fun personalities that work perfectly together. They were an iconic duo. It was probably the best period in modern Who. Period. lol It was just horrible how their companionship came to an end. They really make them so heartbreaking. Now i feel like re-watching the show from where Catherine's introduced. Also i stopped watching after Capaldi. It's just not DW anymore.

That was probably too positive. A case of good intentions leading to a bad outcome. "Ah but John!" I remember talking about this sketch once before and it was when she says "Well Rosemary!" "Well Kathleen!" That's how you greet friends? What do you say to enemies? I was assured by Northern Irish people that it was an entirely accurate depiction. But I'm sorry you didn't get the support when you came out. This is entirely the wrong sort of support here but it's probably better than the alternative.

This sketch is set in the Northern Irish "loyalist" community, who are not known for socially liberal or progressive ideas, the humour is in the extremity of the unexpected response from the boy's mother and community (and the paramilitaries who show up, not to deliver a punishment beating but to ask if their boots go with their turned-up jeans). It is a bit codified by context but is generally funny nonetheless.

@@justinbieberlake5635 Funny concept Justin. Obviously the catholic church in N.Ireland has always been pretty identical to its protestant/presbyterian counterparts on social policies. However, the republican movement - at least left wing parts thereof - tended to argue a more socially liberal/progressive position - or maybe they just paid lip service in that direction. Either way, I concluded the clip was set in the loyalist community (protestant, if you like, both the protestant and presbyterian churches and loyalist politicos are socially conservative) based on the choice of music for the pseudo-pride march at the end. The distinction I made was between loyalists and republicans, not protestant and catholics. Interesting how, when discussing even a comedy clip set in N.Ireland, there isn't even agreement about whether the divide was religious or political! Cheers.

You have to be British or Irish to get this one fully. It's set in northern Ireland (not Ireland) during what looks like a parody of the 1980s. The troubles were in full swing back then. That was a time in Northern Ireland when the country was experiencing a proxy civil war. Two sides of the community at war essentially over whether Northern Ireland should reunite with Ireland or stay seperate in the UK. Northern Ireland was deeply religious back then and suffering a lot. Hence the scene has a dark, grimey, crime feel to it. The march at the end is a parody of the marches both communities used to do. One side marching for Irish unification and the other for loyalty to the Queen. Hence the music playing. But it is instead a gay pride march but has the grimey and dark feel of the marches from the troubles which is nothing like the colorful inviting atmosphere of a pride parade. It's just taking the p*ss out of 1970s/80s Northern Ireland by showing it though the lens of a gay character lol. A place once known as the most dangerous and divided place in Europe (Northern Ireland, UK) canshowing love and acceptance instead. Even the mural at the end is a parody of murals they used to paint to show you were leaving a place that was more pro unification into a place anti unification. Ps, just so you know Ireland isn't like this today lol. Ireland is very modern and gay friendly. But Northern Ireland shown here is still in the UK not part of Ireland, but it's troubled past is behind it.

Around that time London taxis had a service called Cabvision, it was mainly adverts news and adverts but clips were used from certain TV shows. I don't remember seeing any comedy shows, but being in London, and they did have (BBC) Top Gear clips, it might have been (BBC) Live At The Apollo to promote the (London) venue and theatre/shows in general.

Harry Enfield is a genius, same as CT, they depict the vast array of people in the UK so accurately and hilariously. I really can't stand Sarah Millican, but each to their own. I have recommended Bob mortimer on 'would i lie to you' and also to check out 'shooting stars' its still hilarious now and unlike anything else I've seen. Vic reeves and Bob are just so funny, they don't even have to speak. Same with Harry Enfield and Paul Whitehouse, we have so much quality comedy in the UK, it really is hard to pick and choose which ones to suggest.

This is the first time I've Seen Catherine Tate do this sketch... its funny and glad it was enjoyed by yourselves. Sometimes I feel that Americans do not get English humour as it can be a little sarcastic (my sense of humour and not everyone likes it, but hey ho !!) I think that you would enjoy the sketches as the Nan much better. I've been to catholic weddings in Ireland where the bride and groom have their 2 and 4 year old children along, the congregation is a mix of hetro and gay couples and everyone gets along just fine.

There's another longer version of this video where they've substituted Colin Morgan for the original 'John' and it leaves no doubt in anyone's minds that they're from the Roman Catholic / Republican side of the divide in Northern Ireland especially when she refers to their local priest as 'Father' who then winks at 'John' immediately after she tells him about her son's sexuality. They manage to take a 'dig' at both 'The Troubles' in Northern Ireland as well as at the Roman Catholic church all within the space of 9 and a half minutes. You might even recognise Colin Morgan because he played the titular character in 'Merlin'. 👍😁👍
