I think the most important part of this is that 100% of the joke is that the interpreter is terrible, not any of the other cultures represented. Everyone who took part also clearly knew what the joke was, chose to participate, and we've heard behind the scenes stories of how they had to do so many takes because people kept laughing. Honestly I think this could be made today and would be fine.
@carlhartwell79782 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't even necessarily argue that it _couldn't_ be made, though that's a possibility. But what I would say is that _having been made_ it' almost certainly would be branded _'problematic'_ by a certain (albeit small, but clearly very vocal and influential) segment of society which has certainly proven to have the ability to 'cancel' a great many things in recent yrs.

@@robinhill4458 absolutely, you soon get to realise, know and understand from people’s body language how it’s going to go down. @robinhill44582 жыл бұрын
@@mattierenton701 Totally agree,aggressive racism, or any aggressive “ism” should be called out, and I think discouraging narcissistic employers who actually promote segregation, divisiveness and negative competition would be a start. I've always interpreted the sketch as being about British exceptionalism, possessing the global language, in citing one years' TEFL training as being adequate to commandeer seven languages (the two are unrelated, anyhow)! The irony dances on a knife edge with offensiveness. I think it lands just right: Tate's character is ultimately ridiculous.

It’s nice to see fellow Americans smile, laugh and enjoy British comedy. Our humour can be so different to each other. Even though comedy changes over time it’s nice to see a harmless chuckle and a laugh. Alf Garnett, sitcom, in sickness and in health is a belly buster if you can see it for what it is… comedy. 👍🇬🇧

And as you and so many of the commentors have pointed out, sometimes we have to laugh at ourselves...it wasn't meant to be a slur against anybody just a bit of silly fun.
