I think the most important part of this is that 100% of the joke is that the interpreter is terrible, not any of the other cultures represented. Everyone who took part also clearly knew what the joke was, chose to participate, and we've heard behind the scenes stories of how they had to do so many takes because people kept laughing. Honestly I think this could be made today and would be fine.
@carlhartwell7978
@carlhartwell7978 2 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't even necessarily argue that it _couldn't_ be made, though that's a possibility. But what I would say is that _having been made_ it' almost certainly would be branded _'problematic'_ by a certain (albeit small, but clearly very vocal and influential) segment of society which has certainly proven to have the ability to 'cancel' a great many things in recent yrs.

@@robinhill4458 absolutely, you soon get to realise, know and understand from people’s body language how it’s going to go down. @@mattierenton701 Totally agree,aggressive racism, or any aggressive “ism” should be called out, and I think discouraging narcissistic employers who actually promote segregation, divisiveness and negative competition would be a start. We must wean ourselves off of our reliance on huge corporate business or at least only support them if they show some care for their workforce and humanity as a whole.I’m ranting now,but my hope is that we judge one another as we find them and not by the media created stereotypes. I've always interpreted the sketch as being about British exceptionalism, possessing the global language, in citing one years' TEFL training as being adequate to commandeer seven languages (the two are unrelated, anyhow)! Even though comedy changes over time it’s nice to see a harmless chuckle and a laugh. Alf Garnett, sitcom, in sickness and in health is a belly buster if you can see it for what it is… comedy. 👍🇬🇧

That was hiylarious! Loved your reaction. And as you and so many of the commentors have pointed out, sometimes we have to laugh at ourselves...it wasn't meant to be a slur against anybody just a bit of silly fun. If you want more examples of silly accents, try 'Allo 'Allo a BBC sitcom based around a reluctant member of the French Resistance during WW2. EVERYONE including the British characters, have ridiculous cod accents and Arthur Bostrom who plays a British Agent pretending to be a French Police Officer is just hysterical! 😂

Brit here, Just like any country you have a mixed audience and demographic. I never got into Father Brown (I think it was on years ago), And Midsomer murders is just not my bag.. But is my grandparents thing lol Vienna blood was not bad actually I did give it a shot.. But there are much better shows like Peaky Blinders. If I'm gonna be honest, I'm not really a TV drama person. And most of my entertainment comes from online and the cinema lol But yes I'd like to see some videos like that from Amanda too :)

Something of a record there Amanda - 1:35 mins before a snort! If this is your first exposure to Catherine Tate, then my-oh-my have you fallen down a rabbit hole! Enjoy the journey - great video again!

Classic. I remember seeing this the first time. Can't believe it's over 15 years ago. I know the Americans love our sense of humour. Imagine the amount of takes this must have taken.

Should watch the one where she is joined by her family and they end up doing Riverdance in the ward. Or the one where she tells guy she doesn't fancy him. I love Catherine Tate ❣️
