Catherine Woodville - The Sister Of The White Queen
One of the most influential women of Medieval England was Elizabeth Woodville, the woman who became Queen marrying Edward IV. She was seen as a prominent player during the Wars of the Roses, and she was known for her great beauty and she was the consort to the King. But she had a sister who’s children would become troublesome and one in particular would lose his life being executed during the Tudor Period. Catherine Woodville was a member of the Woodville family and she also came to prominence during Edward IV’s reign, however she managed to survive and even lived well and comfortably during the reign of the Tudor king Henry VII. But what is the story of the sister of the white queen?

I think it would've been cool, if Katherine and Jasper Tudor had children together. Those kids would've probably gone on to have a lot of influence at their cousin's courts. I've heard that the couple had an affectionate relationship, even though it didn't blossom into the same sweeping romance as her sister's with Edward IV. (5/26/2022)

Elizabeth Woodville had a lot of relatives and went about getting them advantageous marriages. Another viewer made the comment that because of this, she was not well-liked. But I had read that she did what any one would do if they were queen, take care of her family. And people were probably very jealous, too. Thank you for the history about one such relative of Elizabeth Woodville. I did not realize she married Jasper Tudor.

Hi Diane, That was probably me who you referred to making the comment about Elizabeth Woodville not being well liked because raising her family's fortunes while she was queen. That's what I have read and seen in documentaries. I agree with you, she had the power and looked after her family. I think jealousy played a big part in it too. She wasn't as "high born" as many nobles and their were not happy with her influence over Edward IV. Anne Boleyn did the same thing while she was in Henry VIII's good graces before and after her marriage to him. I just saw something on the Seymours too, but I can't remember if Jane's brothers, Thomas & Edward had already been given titles by Henry or if it was because Henry fell for Jane. Truly, I was so many history channels and things sometimes get a bit jumbled. 🙃

@@vintagegal541 It very well could have been your comments I read 📚. LOL. You're right, of course, about the other instances of advancing one's relatives. All noble families were always trying to gain advancement, titles, land, etc and if their daughters had to marry the king in order to achieve this, so be it. This was certainly true in Anne Boleyn's case. And jealousy was rampant back then too. It caused a lot of trouble for Anne. You had to tread a fine line in Henry's, both the VII and VIII, court.

@@dianetheisen8664 Amen, Sister! It's still going on in today's governments. Also, the large corporation that I'm retired from (it was a lot stronger from the 1940's to 1980's) had a lot of nepotism, which is a smaller scale. However, mom or dad would be hired, move up in the company and then bring kids, siblings, etc. I'm proud to say that I was not among that lot. I'm just grateful for what I have in my life. Supposedly the Duke of Buckingham was upset about being married to the daughter of mere knight. When she became Queen, Elizabeth Woodville made advantageous marriages for her siblings. The nobility was upset because she was depriving them of eligible husbands for noble daughters.

Hi Andrea, I've read that Elizabeth was not very well liked in general. As you pointed out here about her making good matches for her siblings, I understand that she elevated her family to the chagrin to the more noble born. Apparently, Edward IV was besotted with her.

@@Nightbird1914 Hi Collnss, I watched the O1955 Olivier version on HBOMax. I have got to say that I thought it was beautifully filmed in color. The costumes are gorgeous, especially the men's.! I actually found it somewhat easy to follow because Shakespeare isn't always. Olivier is very good, but I will say that Sir Cedric Hardwick (60's) was way to old to be playing Edward IV who would have been in his 30's. The same with Gielgud and Richardson playing the other two royal brothers, but they were all known to be Shakespearean actors on the stage. Pamela Brown played Jane Shore. I loved how she silently moved around the set because she was supposed to hide in the "shadows". If you get a chance, I recommend it. There's a 1995 version that I haven't seen starring Ian McKellen as Richard and Annette Bening as Elizabeth Woodville. It's set in 1930's England. IMDB says it's set on the eve of fascism. Interesting concept, There's my essay for the day. I hope that you get a chance to see the 1955 version. Have a fab day!🌻

My ex's mother had documentation that she, I forgot from which parent, was a direct descendant of King John. I don't remember which of John's children either. Since I didn't like my ex mother-in-law, I had to chuckle at that one. Historically, John has always been the worst.
