She played Roxie with just the right dose of being in part malevolent and dumb....something no one has been able to do as well, not even Gwen Verdon. The Academy Awards have always been 65% politics, and 35% art. The politics is usually evident by the films that DON'T get nominated. Chicago won because it was a musical, a genre Hollywood wanted to preserve. Not only that, although it's undeniably mean spirited, it's underlying message was feminist in nature. And truthfully, as it turned out, it was one of the best musicals that ever made the leap onto the big screen, mainly by the innovative way it was filmed and presented. It deserved every single award it won!
