Safety tip from an old Cascades climber. When making a swift water crossing unfasten your waist and chest straps. If you do take the plunge your pack has a better chance of floating up not pulling you under. You can also get out of it fast if you have to.

Great videos. Keep them coming. Love the previews you provide of so many great destination hikes and backpacking destinations. You are adding to our wilderness trips bucket list. Try the Garmin GPSMAP® 66i if you get a chance. I’ve used several GPS and satellite communicators and I’ve found this unit to combine the most useful features on a very easy platform. I use it primarily for its GPS capabilities, but love I still have satellite access for emergencies.

Another great video, Catherine. Wondered if you could comment on using a full-size tripod v.s. one of the small, compact gorilla pod types for filming while on the trail. Specifically for someone who isn't into creating content for a channel but still wants decent footage. I'm struggling with whether to purchase a 50-60" tripod to replace/ augment my flexible smaller one.
@CatherineGregoryAdventures
@CatherineGregoryAdventures 5 жыл бұрын
I used to carry the small Gorilla pod, but it sits too low and there aren’t always trees to hang it from. If you’re not creating my content, they can work very well.

Another beautiful video, Cat. Whenever we did Creek crossings, we would take our backpacks off, or, at least, unhook our straps in the event of a fall and a wet pack dragging us down. What are your thoughts on this?

For a trip like this with a heavy pack over rough and rocky terrain, wouldn't a sturdy hiking boot be a better choice for comfort and ankle support? Unless some new technology has passed me by...? I've always been overgeared though...I remember planning this strenuous hike and getting all geared up, only to meet people coming the other way in flip flops.

Hi Rhoda! It was comfortable. In the 60’s I’d say during the day. I didn’t change my shoes for the first couple water crossings. They did dry. The last one I changed into my crocs. Going through water in the backcountry makes your shoes and socks smell really bad. They get a swampy smell. lol I’ll be shooting a couple RV related videos in the next couple days. Stay tuned for those coming up!

Beautiful video!! I have a question for you, since you are the Sierra Nevada expert ;)! We are trying to plan our next backpacking adventure for the first week of September. The question is, in California, what 20 to 30 mile loop hikes would you recommend? We really wanted to do the Ansel Adams wilderness, the same route in David Gray's video, but permits are not available. I know that a percentage of permits are available for walk-ups, but we really don't want to chance plane tickets and a week of vacation on "maybe" getting a permit. Any advise you could offer would be greatly appreciated. We are up for any location in the lower 48, but I really really would prefer to do some Sierra Nevada trails. Thanks so much!!
@CatherineGregoryAdventures
@CatherineGregoryAdventures 5 жыл бұрын
Hi guys! Man...it’s going to be tough to get a permit in advance for any of the best trails. People are on it as soon as they become available 6 months in advance. There are several trailheads to begin that hike on. Try them all. Rae Lakes is a stunning hike, but you’ll probably have the same problem. Also, try Big Pine. Good luck!!

There’s always going to be haters. I sometimes think it’s people who just get off on negative energy and they don’t even watch the video. lol The more my channel grows, the more I’ll have that. I just let it roll off.

Love that section of the PCT Snoqualmie Pass to Waptus Lake, Salmon la Sac n often on to Stevens Pass. I’ve been hiking the Alpine Wildernesses area long before this designation .. The main PCT has actually been relocated in parts over the years. You were blessed being able to use the newest sections. I’ve camped at Waptus Lake for weeks on end over the years. You need to come back up n explore a few more of the high lakes around Waptus Lake n that section of the PCT between Snoqualmie n Stevens Pass. Enjoyed your flick n trip. I’m 75 yrs old n taking care of my wife now so enjoy others trips n experiences for now. Cheers .. Until your next trip. I’m subscribing to your page to check out your other adventures young lady. Happy trails ... Grandpa J

I’ll definitely be back up. I was in Washington this summer, but left early because of the smoke. I wanted to do so much more.

What are your thoughts regarding tent vs. hammock..?
@sagehiker
@sagehiker 5 жыл бұрын
Well done again!. The Alpine Lakes Wilderness is quite the star. Poor Jarl. He does have a future as in used trail sales :) Joey trashes another tent. Going downhill can be as brutal as slick and loose uphill and tougher on knees and hams. I went with Spot X a year ago as I do not always carry my iPhone versus the InReach Mini. And I can take random messages from my "minders", like weather updates and more. Another few years and we will all have SpaceX web sat phones. Or Iridium. Keep it up Cat.

Thank you Rob. I recently did a day hike in the North Cascades with a steep descent and my knees were not happy. lol

I just found your channel a few months ago, and have watched a whole lot of your short films. This one might be my favorite so far. I’m hoping I get a chance to do a similar hike before I get too much older and more decrepit. But you have inspired me to go on a few hikes here in Maryland where I live. Thanks. BTW, hope I don’t run into you on a trail. I’d have to figure I just dropped dead, and you’re the angel the Lord has sent to summon me to judgement. And I ain’t ready.

@@CatherineGregoryAdventures it's funny thing about that Pacific Coast trails we live within a half-mile where it crosses in the Cajon Pass in San Bernardino right behind the scales where you walk through the tunnel I don't know if you've ever been on that part but it is so cool it could be a hundred degrees out and you walk through the tunnel it's like 60 degrees nice place in the summer receipt hikers go buy all the time we talked to him once in awhile incredible people from all over the world good Bunch kids usually like you keep well and be safe
