In my humble opinion, there’s nothing better than backpacking in hiking, and seeing grizzly bears or wolves. Thats the reason why I love the greater Yellowstone ecosystem, and my favorite mountain range the Wind River. The scenery was amazing.

Thanks to both of you for taking us along. I have never been healthy enough to do this. Birth defects, work damage, etc. meant I could only do roadside view and short walks. However my visit to Banff and Lake Louise some years back were awesome. As beautiful as the video is, a camera cannot capture the full awe of those scenes. Anyone who can see it in person should do so. We also spent time in Waterton that summer which again is amazing. The wildfire smoke the summer I was there played havoc with me as you could taste it and it really killed the resolution in the images I took with my Canon 7D camera. This video showed me how much I missed by staying on the roads, but also reminded me of the powerful majesty of the Canadian Rookies. Get there if you can.

Also six weeks in Alberta really messed with my internal clock. Having light until 11pm confused my system. I remember thinking that going to bed with day light in the window was something I had not done since kindergarten and I was in my sixties.

Cat... Hi again sweetheart. Let me tell you why I always use bear bells now. I've had three face to face encounters with black bears. All of them were on trails in thick brush just like the one you were on. The first two ended well with the bears turning around and crashing off through the undergrowth. I wasn't so fortunate the third time. In early May of 1992 myself and two buddies were trekking in the Superior NF north west of Duluth MN. I was leading the group on a trail much like that. When I rounded a corner and was literally face to face with what I thought was a large black bear. In an instance it charged and knocked me to the ground. I put my arms up over my face. It bit me four or five times on my right arm and shoulder. And just as fast it turned and ran back down the trail. I think it would have been worse if I had been alone. The wounds weren't really that bad. Just a bunch of puncture wounds. Well, a lot of puncture wounds. Some quite large. You know how it is when you're several miles from the trailhead. And that was in the days before s.o.s devices like your Garman. After some field first aid and what seemed like the longest and most painful hike of my life. We made it back to the truck and drove nearly 125-miles back into Duluth. It took twenty four stitches to put things back together. Pretty lucky I guess. So since then I always use bells. Both are like mini cow bells. The one on my staff is about 2-inches and the one on my pack is around 5-inches. Yes they're quite noisy. They clang around nicely. But I haven't had another chance meeting like that since. And I've been to the same area many times since. That was just a black bear Cat. Maybe around 400-pounds. I would hate to think how a similar situation with a grizzly would turn out. I know you carry bear spray. But even if I would have had any. It happened so fast it wouldn't have mattered. Now you understand why... I worry about you when you're in bear country. Please reconsider your position on bear bells. I would be devastated if something like that or worse were to happen to you. So please humor me and use this to pick up a couple bells for yourself. Even if you only use them occasionally. I'm not trying to alarm you. Well, yes I am. Please be safe and well sweetheart. Have fun wherever you go. Love you. 🙏 Randy. 👍

My Dear Friend Catherine, Well worth the wait. Time in the mountains seems to move soooooo, slowly. The mountains seem to have an infinite ♾️ time they seem to stand as the sentinels and the guardians as time passes around them, they are not in what they protect so dearly. They move in a totally different time then the earth itself. It was a long time ago in a different place. I went up for a weekend trip. I went in in Colorado and came out a year l8r in Wyoming. Ofcoarse between the time I went in and came out, needless to say I was 2 different people. First thing I remember was when did we, as a people become so noisy. It is almost obscene and to say the least offensive. You have come so far in such a short period of time Catherine, U should be so proud of yourself. Time in the mountains change a person, in ways no one else will ever know. So in closing, you are coming into your own little lady. As always may U always have a warm gentle wind at your back pushing you forward. May you always be traveling into another beautiful SUNRISE. So many places to see, so little time. 1 AT A TIME.
