At 4:19 there is a small dwelling in the cliff. 50 years ago, several of my classmates from NMSU and I went backpacking to the Gila Wilderness. It was February and COLD. First night we slept in that dwelling trying to stay warm. It was in much better shape back then. My friends almost froze that night. I, however, had a goose down sleeping bag and was toasty warm. One of my best memories from college.

My wife and I have been truly blessed to have packed up the canyons of all 3 branches of the Gila. Some of the vistas in your video looked familiar. We visited 3 hot springs -- two on the Middle Fork (Jordan and Lightfeather) and one (unnamed) on the combined river about 1 mile downstream of the East Fork junction and bridge. Wonderful experiences! We always chose July as our preferred time to visit -- warmer temps and generally lower river water levels, both of which we prefer. Great video!

Wonderful video, Katherine. Seeing you all examine the wolf prints in the snow was so moving. That scene pressed up against my reading of Sand County Almanac by Aldo Leopold. “‘We reached the old wolf in time to watch a fierce green fire dying in her eyes,’ he wrote later. ‘I realized then, and have known ever since, that there was something new to me in those eyes - something known only to her and to the mountain’.” Thank goodness the Gila Wilderness is protected and that wolfs are being reintroduced. Thanks to you, Joey and Kyle for heralding this treasure to all people.

35 years ago I was in there, it began to rain, 2 days it rained, The Ghila went from this little stream to a raging torrent more than 20 feet deep. Ron and I had moved up on a ledge and made camp... at 2 am the water was almost at our camp. We had to move higher. The bridge in Cliff was under water and the town was flooded. Always an adventure.

Even though I'm 70 and have had a lot of backpacking experience, I'm scared of winter camping! But I think with an MSR 4 season tent, a 0 degree sleeping bag and some good gloves, maybe I could do this. It was very beautiful out there. Not at all like the recent Sierra blizzard with their 140 mph winds and 7 foot snow drop!

Yes! Lots of channels are doing interesting research in the area of alternative history that has recently been presented to us. You would need a really open mind and heart to be able to receive this stuff without allowing the ego to shut off all possibilities because the ideas are way outside of our comfort zones and very much contradicts the current accepted narrative we all grew up with. It's all very fascinating if you can handle it! @@Warrior_Resisting_Colonialism

I grew up near the Gila and one thing I always hated about the Gila is the talcum powder dust in the valleys. I've never had such abrasive and intrusive dust in my whole life. Where you went looked MUCH better. Last time I was there I hiked into a hot spring. Upon arrival we hopped into our swimming suits and went to get in just to see that there were THOUSANDS of leeches in the water, each about an inch long. It's a ruggedly beautiful place with many spots reminding me of parts of Yellowstone. Just beautiful! Great story Cat!
