The court saw Catherine 'Cathi' Bedy's full deposition today.
Witness testimony continues Tuesday in a $200 million lawsuit against Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital that was featured in the Netflix documentary ‘Take Care of Maya’. In 2016, at just 10 years old, Maya Kowalski was admitted to Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital for severe pain and was removed from the custody of her parents after staff accused them of "medical abuse." Her mother, Beata Kowalski, hung herself in her garage on Jan. 7, 2016 after going months without seeing her due to the medical abuse allegations, according to the family's attorney, Greg Anderson.

Maya's mother was a medical professional herself, she had spent an inordinate amount of time researching Maya's condition, and bringing her to doctors who were best suited to treating her. These people gathered like a pack of wolves, with their rat pack mentality, they decided they would show Maya's mother that they would take custody of Maya, more as a punishment to her mother than for the benefit of the child. They keep deferring blame, but the courts made their decisions based on the crap Bedy and the rest fed them, and to maintain control of Maya, they stuck with the Munchausen by proxy as far as the courts were concerned, but in reality they were accusing Maya of inventing her symptoms, while billing the insurance company for 3 months care treating CRPS. It is absolutely tragic that Maya's mother had to die in order for the child to be allowed home and get the treatment she needed. I hope criminal charges follow for these people, because they are the highest order of criminals.

Y'all are so fricking stupid Don't forget that this child abuse specialist paediatrician has SAVED COUNTLESS LIVES - it's a shame she made a mistake in Maya's case but for everyone to demonise this doctor is crazy! fyi as a medical student - ketamine infusions for CRPS don't have a tremendous evidence base behind it but it's a possible alternative/3rd-4th line treatment once all conventional approaches have failed. I don't blame the parents but for them to have put their daughter into a ketamine COMA for multiple days intubated is CRAZY! They didn't know any better so it's not their fault but let's not demonise the medical doctor who just made a mistake in light of cold hard facts that could suggest this pt is being abused and that must take priority. Let's not forget that a JUDGE signed off the order and it was maintained for several months despite frequent appeals on the families part. WHy aren't y'all blaming these judges, the lawyers, the hospital industry and the systems we have in place for intervening on child abuse. Why blame a single person when she does not share all the blame. And fyi it's a shame her CRPS was overlooked this is something md's must learn from but at the end of the day doxxing this Dr and calling for justice is bs when she literally made use of the systems ALREADY in place to take children away from suspected abuse.

She needs to be criminally charged for not only this but the prior child abuse she inflicted. I love how she deflects by saying that she wasn't the one who removed the child; it was DCF. This is bone-chilling. My spouse has been living with debilitating CRPS for five years now. The ability of a human being to work beyond the pain, grab moments of joy despite the body they're locked into, it incredible. To deem someone as not being in pain because they're not visibly in anguish is cruel and/or uninformed. To take a child away from their parents because of that ability is criminal.

Exactly! Saying she only complained when prompted was taken as she didn’t have pain yet if she knew CRPS, she would know her baseline is 10/10. Is she supposed to repeat that all day long? Nope, she’s sadly used to it 😒 she also knew they weren’t helping her anyways so why complain unless they ask about it…

When I was in the Marine I would work 12-14 hours a day of very hard labor that would make you bust your knees and back, I would work 7 days a week on borderline minimum wage, and I don't expect people to say that I did shit, because it was my job, neither should nurses and especially doctors who earn WAY way more than I did doing far easier work. The staff at JHCH were grossly negligent, instead of doing their due diligence to investigate CRPS and ask Beata what was going on, they went ahead and framed her as an abuser with Munchausen By Proxy, and consistently fought against the Kowalskis so the family courts would alienate Beata from Maya, they failed their due diligence, all they had to do was investigate CRPS and why Beata was dosing Maya with Ketamine, they would have found Beata had a legitimate doctors prescription, and they would have understood Maya was at no risk of abuse given Beata was educated on the matter, in fact, Ketamine right now is a legal prescription! They were grossly negligent. And to say hospital staff are angels is a gross exaggeration, nurses have raped and killed patients in the past, just a couple months ago in Okinawa there was a Navy nurse dosing newborns with some kind of drug to keep them quiet because it bothered her, she hated babies, the nurses and childcare fields are FULL of abusers wanting to take advantage of helpless individuals. As a survivor of child abuse, I will tell you that if Cathi's allegations of child abuse against Beata were true and if Maya was actually abused, she would NOT allow anyone to touch her. She would NOT ask an adult female to comfort her. If Maya was abused by her mother, she would NOT want to be comforted by another adult female, especially the person responsible for separating her from her family. Her testimony about her "comforting" Maya is proof that Maya was not abused so she basically self-snitched. I hate this lady so much. I have never met a trustworthy social worker in my life. I had my own social worker as a child who sent me back to my abusive home despite me having injuries from abuse. I also worked closely with social workers while being a youth counselor for kids with behavioral problems. Social workers were never available when there was a crisis and they would use their "therapy sessions" to gaslight kids against certain counselors. Most of the time, social workers in this setting actually caused more problems than they solved, making promises to violent kids, bargaining with these kids so they behaved during their therapy sessions. Then these violent kids would act out when the promises were not kept. The social workers would sneak out to go home and not keep their promises which would cause very violent outbursts and an unsafe environment for the other kids in the cottage. In the end, we would have to restrain these violent kids in order to protect ourselves and the other kids. This causes unnecessary trauma for the kids and for the youth counselors. When we called the social worker, who caused the problem in the first place, in order to report the incident as we were supposed to do by law, he wouldn't even answer the phone. In my eyes, many social workers are useless and cause more problems than they solve. There are some good social workers but I've never met any. Cathi Bedi is among the worst I have ever witnessed and this is just the testimony. I'm sure I would be thoroughly disgusted watching her in action first hand.

True story: my oldest son @ age 5 years was having severe stomach pain, but these pain would only come on at night during the day he would play and not have pains in his stomach. We would take him to our local hospital and pediatrician several times. Our local hospital took xrays and it showed trapped gas. These continued on for about a month. We went on weekend 4th of July vacation. Our son continued to complain of stomach pain once again at night only. We took him to a different hospital where we were on vacation at when the ER doctor examined our son he told us he was having appendicitis and surgey was needed. Because we questioned the diagnosis and just asked if we should get a second opinion because want our hospital and his pediatrician had been telling us about the trap gas we were reported to child protective services the hospital that we were denying medical care which was not the case. Luckily the case worker believed us and our son had his surgery.

My daughter at 15 had an extended medical condition that kept her in the hospital for months at a National recognized local Childrens hospital wherein I learned early that the nursing staff quickly dominates your life. If they feel the slightest of control issues by a parent the retribution was apparent. Every time my daughter had a visitor was the only time a nurse would always sit atadesk area outside her room. I realized certain conversations of my daughter getting physically sick and I would clean her as opposed to waiting on nurses would be mentioned after guests left in a flippant manner. I can easily see how these people can manipulate information for control and retribution. In retrospect being in shock and concern for your child’s health then being challenged could quickly go sideways. Luckily her doctors were actually amazing but the majority of young nurses were very petty and controlling. I also mentioned early on that I worked for a medical malpractice law firm, generally helps.

Very respectful of your situation and yes, there are many petty and controlling nurses, but being a nurse myself, I always knew my patients were my responsibility and it was kind of like being in charge of knowing everything your patient did in an 8-12 hour shift as to why as a nurse, I would keep close tabs on my patient. It is a nurse’s responsibility to know when meds are given, Iv administration, new symptoms, peeing, pooping, with descriptions and sometimes measurement, emisis, movement of patients, monitors, managing and prepping for tests, charting, blood sugars, catheter, any food and drink taken…the list is literally endless. With all due respect , sometimes family members seemed dubious of nurses controlling attitude, but some of it is due to this. 20 years in healthcare and I rarely had any problems with family members. There were only a few times when I didn’t get a mutual respect with family members. I’m sorry to hear your daughter was sick. Hope she is better. The people who worked for this hospital were people who had put in incredible TIME AND MONEY, years of their lives, training to take care of seriously ill children. These people are motivated to lie, harm, disable children, or damage their families??? Do you understand that these are people who have trained for years to try to help children???? THEY HAD NO MOTIVE to HARM MAYA OR HER FAMILY. They were acting as COURT MANDATED REPORTERS to report suspicions they had regarding possible child abuse, which clearly existed with Maya, as many of her providers doubted her diagnosis, and were very uncomfortable with the treatment her parents were relentlessly pushing for. THESE PEOPLE WERE NEVER SEEKING TO DESTROY THIS FAMILY. THESE PROFESSIONALS WERE INSTEAD PUTTING THEMSELVES ON THE LINE, TRYING, IN THEIR VIEW, TO PROTECT THIS CHILD. Get down off of your armchair high horses and think critically for a second. Why would all these good people who have spent their careers trying to care for gravely ill children and their families suddenly change into soul sucking, incompetent, evil beasts when it came to Maya and her family? There was NO MALICE. I'm not God. Were they right, or not? Who knows. It's very muddy whether she ever even had this syndrome or not. Reasonable people, highly trained medical professionals, can even obviously disagree. It's all clear as mud. But understand, these professionals are working in incredibly difficult circumstances, trying to do their best for their patients and families!!! Don't believe that? Then keep your children at home and employ your crystals, and voodoo cards the next time they develop an infection, or horrible pain syndrome, and spare us all, especially your children's MEDICAL providers, your obviously supreme sense of all knowing sense of self righteousness. EVERYONE LOST THE DAY6 BEATA CHOSE TO TAKE HER LIFE, INCLUDING ALL THESE PROFESSIONALS WHO WAKE UP EARLY AND STAY LATE, giving up precious time with their own families in order to better serve other children and their families because they are dedicated to the children they care for day in, and day out. The EASY PATH, would have been to do whatever the Kowalski's wanted them to do. Less documentation. Less litigation. Less NOISE. Did they do that? NO! They took the hard route. The route THEY felt was best for a child viewed as vulnerable, and likely a victim of child abuse. But you know better, right? Nail them to the wall, right? And then complain, COMPLAIN, MOAN, and scream, when NO ONE WILL ADMIT YOUR CHILD TO THE HOSPITAL for uncontrolled, inexplicable pain because the risk of litigation is too high. I wouldn't touch your kid with a 10 foot pole, but then they are better people than me.

Nurses and doctors are very strong and determined advocates on behalf of their own families and Maya's mother was a registered nurse who is very well versed and her daughters illness. my husband had a very rare interstitial lung disorder and was hospitalized numerous times and was on a ventilator most of those times. I was very well-versed in his illness and the treatments that worked best and because you don't always get the same team of doctors and nurses every time you go into the hospital you have to bring everybody up to speed… And doctors and nurses don't like family members who advocate for their loved ones.

She's a terrible liar and we can see right through it. So the little priest is lying that he couldn't do anything religious with Maya. The word "Massive" update was used because the patient was going to be transferred? Please! Something is wrong with this woman! She got pleasure out of hurting this family. Why would she not give Maya a holiday dress?

I’ve had it my entire life with other autoimmune disordered. They said I was a liar and kicked me out of a hospital once. This system is a joke and I hope others start fighting this bs.

As a retired child protection social worker, it is clear that this social worker is poorly trained, incompetent, a bully who misused her power on multiple occasions. She is what we call a "dangerous" social worker. Ironically, she is lacking in remorse, has grandiose beliefs of her skills, thinks she is omnipotent, all of the symptoms of a sociopathic narcissist. She should be in prison for the harm she has caused to Maya and her family.

To me, her mother is a hero and I honestly cant say that I would not have done what she did if I were in her place. The only way her daughter was going to be free would be for her to be out of the picture. I dont think she was overwhelmed with sadness that she could not see her, that would be a huge part of it, but I think that day, she realized that she could no longer allow her family to be held captive. She was right, Mia was immediately released to her father. I hope they get the maximum amount that they can get and if the judge does not require the licensures of this woman to be stripped and her affiliation with that hospital to be immediately revolked than I think if I were her father I would move next to sue her organization, not for the money, but that she be unable to work in this field again. That would be my plea deal, she goes and I wont sue. She stays and I will take it all the way I have to for it to happen. And, yes, I dont give up. We are STILL fighting and we wont stop until all of this can NEVER happen to another child, mother and family again, EVER.

I am from the Tampa Bay area. I honestly moved out of the town. Unfortunately, you can't just NOT go to that hospital. Emergencies happen and the ambulance/helicopter is going to take you to the closest Children's Hospital. Not to mention, many parents are clueless and we just want to take their child to the "best" hospital. There are families who were affected by this after their children made it to that hospital via ambulance. If you lived in the Tampa Bay area, this was many parents greatest fear.

@@reidnlorikincaid9683 First of all , the US medical system is about profit, not healthcare. Secondly , this woman was a total outlier, diagnosing abuse at several times the state average. The hospital should have picked up on that. Finally, the hospital was charging insurance for treating Maya for CRPS , all the while denying she had it. If you watch the documentary you will probably realize how much at fault the hospital was.

It has been drummed into healthcare providers' heads that pain for our patients is not what we think we are observing only but MAINLY from what the patients say it is. Also if someone has had chronic pain for an extended period of time, they get used to it and does not display symptoms the same way as someone who recently started feeling pain. This is why we rely mostly on what they tell us and that is why pain assessment is now the 6th vital signs.
