It helps to watch/listen and read the CA Primer on 'Indulgences' time and time again. Having heard Karlo and read on this subject, I think of this 'lessening of temporal punishment' simply as a form of 'grace', as a 'charism/charis' of the Church, and avoid the Latin-medieval term. As to why the institutional Church has such a defined legal framework on the economy of salvation and redemption, to me it begins simply with our origins or 'Genesis'. If we lived with faithful obedience then the tree of Life is ours by default, but the choice to experience 'knowledge of good and evil' made 'Revelation' to humanity necessary and the structures of that economy was the only way we can re-experience God's mercy and love through 'human understanding'. Then within this framework, the Church defined and explained 'legal' system of remission and forgiveness, discipline and examination (the original word for trial and temptation), and the blessing or grace that lessens the effects of our distorted life makes sense. After all, even in secular legal systems, a person may be forgiven by their victim, they are still guilty of a crime committed and have to serve their sentence in some form, so even a contrite and forgiven person has to accept the consequence of the hurt or grieve their offence caused. And there are ways these can be lessened or commuted, if certain conditions are met. If this is considered 'just', then indeed, God's compassion may be greater in effect, and the Church's charism to lessen or commute our sentence must make sense too. 🍻 It then makes sense that a rejection of this, how works of 'goodness' being able to have a positive effect on our salvation - are also 'works of the Spirit', are a gift of grace. Therefore those who have no remorse for their sin or those who refuse this goodness, refuse or are wilfully averse to the work of Spirit, are unforgiven.

Hey guys great explanation for a Catholic, but here's the thing, most of what you just said went over many non-Catholics heads as they aren't used to the language used and they aren't necessarily going to look up the definitions as we Catholics use them rather they will use their own word bank. I think it would be helpful in the future to explain a real indulgence and then proceed to explain the process of acquiring one, as most people think it's an easy thing to do, while also believing (probably) indulgences don't require practice in virtue.

He said this is so easy to believe. No, it's not. We confess our sins, but we're sort of forgiven, BUT. No, that's not forgiven. You still owe a debt, even though you're sort of, kind of, partially forgiven. Christ didn't die to absolve you of sin. You're now born into sin, it's only removed as an infant and you're responsible and must endlessly pay for all your sins all your life. Plus, you may not have paid enough in this life. In most cases, you still have to pay for an undefined number of years, possibly centuries some more in purgatory. Not signing up for all that. Jesus said to have faith as a little child. But no, the Catholic church says you need a degree just to understand all the convoluted ways in which you aren't really forgiven, and you have to endlessly pay. This is just an intro to indulgences, treasury of merit and purgatory. There's a lot more than this for you to be endlessly worried about. It's like being born into terrible debt and you never get it paid off.

Am a cradle Catholic. Never liked indulgences. Because $ is involved. I can do the very things in an indulgence myself. I can go to Mass, communion, confession pray the specific prayers and actions etc. Plus I can add things! I can do extra adoration, fasting and scripture reading and do it for the reparation of sin. Yes it is from my heart not the legal requirements the church lays out! God sees my heart! All the discussion takes away from that when I start following legal directives. I am sure people will not like what I said. Scripture has the Words of God. It is in scripture. Sometimes I just think the beauty and simplicity of the straight gospel is wonderful. Billy Graham shared that. Sometimes we overthink. Mother Mary said...”Do whatever He tells you”. Christ is the answer.

Thank you. Yes, Medieval days are gone. I believe that some old customs can be continued but a bit differently to these current times. Some people may need micromanaging at first. As I grow in deeper love of the Lord, I use the guidelines of the church and I get inspiration and insight from “Him”. Especially in adoration and prayer. I do those things from my heart rather than from my mind and checking off boxes. But when I was young I needed the ‘specific’ info. Now it comes more naturally from love. God bless! Thank you.

It's NOT ABOUT MONEY! Watch the video. Do more research. The are dozens and dozens of ways to receive a full or partial indulgence that have nothing to do with money. Indulgences were a real thing long before Martin Luther came along.

The very idea that you can tap into someone else’s good deeds is absolutely ridiculous. You will be judged on your OWN journey. Penance or suffering does not remit sins, or debt or anything. Any chastisement is part of our sanctification, but has nothing whatsoever with any debt we owe for sins, otherwise Jesus did not do what He said He did and furthermore was incapable of finishing the final sacrifice for ALL sins. It is only faith that pleases God. This idea of a treasury of merit is an example of another manmade doctrine that is contrary to Bible teachings. Works will be judged only as a way of determining rewards in heaven. Why are you twisting Scripture when Christ said His yoke is easy and His burden is light ? The gospel is so simple and beautiful, yet the word salad argument you are trying to espouse is an absolute fairy tale. No church has the authority to dispense grace, forgive sins, or promote veneration of God’s creation (saints and Mary) instead of Him alone (the Creator). The “binding and loosing instruction was only given to the apostles, not to any successors. Once you die, your fate is sealed. Just ask Lazarus and the rich man.

What a pile of rubbish. You are criticizing the apostles because Paul himself was a spiritual father (1 Corin 4:15-16) who administered the mysteries or sacraments (1 Corin 4:1) and did confessions.(2 Corin 2:10)

Jesus Christ told us to pick up our Cross and carry it. He saved us baptized with The Holy Spirit from Original Sin we acquired from the disobedience of Adam and Eve. Sins committed after Baptism have to be confessed, absolved and penance served to be forgiven by God. That’s why Jesus instituted the Sacrament of Reconciliation in 2 Corinthians 5:18 But all is of God, who has reconciled us to himself through Christ, and who has given us the ministry of reconciliation. 2 Corinthians 5:19 For certainly God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, not charging them with their sins. And he has placed in us the Word of reconciliation. 2 Corinthians 5:20 Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, so that God is exhorting through us. We beseech you for Christ: be reconciled to God. John 20:21 Therefore, he said to them again: “Peace to you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” John 20:22 When he had said this, he breathed on them. And he said to them: “Receive the Holy Spirit. John 20:23 Those whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them, and those whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.” Jesus Christ appointed His apostles first Pope & Priests, gave THEM & their successors His authority, instituted Sacraments and commanded them to spread His Church Infallibly to the world. Matthew 16:18 And I say to you, that you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hell shall not prevail against it. Matthew 16:19 And I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven. And whatever you shall bind on earth shall be bound, even in heaven. And whatever you shall release on earth shall be released, even in heaven.” John 1:42 And he led him to Jesus. And Jesus, gazing at him, said: “You are Simon, son of Jonah. You shall be called Cephas,” (which is translated as Peter). Mark 3:14 And he acted so that the twelve would be with him, and so that he might send them out to preach. Mark 3:15 And he gave them authority to cure infirmities, and to cast out demons: Mark 3:16 and he imposed on Simon the name Peter; Mark 3:17 and also he imposed on James of Zebedee, and John the brother of James, the name ‘Boanerges,’ that is, ‘Sons of Thunder;’ Mark 3:18 and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James of Alphaeus, and Thaddeus, and Simon the Canaanite, Mark 3:19 and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him. Ephesians 2:19 Now, therefore, you are no longer visitors and new arrivals. Instead, you are citizens among the saints in the household of God, Ephesians 2:20 having been built upon the foundation of the Apostles and of the Prophets, with Jesus Christ himself as the preeminent cornerstone. Ephesians 2:21 In him, all that has been built is framed together, rising up into a holy temple in the Lord. Ephesians 2:22 In him, you also have been built together into a habitation of God in the Spirit. 1 Corinthians 11:23 For I have received from the Lord what I have also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus, on the same night that he was handed over, took bread, 1 Corinthians 11:24 and giving thanks, he broke it, and said: “Take and eat. This is my body, which shall be given up for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” 1 Corinthians 11:25 Similarly also, the cup, after he had eaten supper, saying: “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 1 Corinthians 11:26 For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord, until he returns. 1 Corinthians 11:27 And so, whoever eats this bread, or drinks from the cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be liable of the body and blood of the Lord. 1 Corinthians 11:28 But let a man examine himself, and, in this way, let him eat from that bread, and drink from that cup. 1 Corinthians 11:29 For whoever eats and drinks unworthily, eats and drinks a sentence against himself, not discerning it to be the body of the Lord. Luke 22:19 And taking bread, he gave thanks and broke it and gave it to them, saying: “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this as a commemoration of me.” Luke 22:20 Similarly also, he took the chalice, after he had eaten the meal, saying: “This chalice is the new covenant in my blood, which will be shed for you. John 6:51 I am the living bread, who descended from heaven. John 6:52 If anyone eats from this bread, he shall live in eternity. And the bread that I will give is my flesh, for the life of the world.” John 6:53 Therefore, the Jews debated among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” John 6:54 And so, Jesus said to them: “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of man and drink his blood, you will not have life in you. John 6:55 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. John 6:56 For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. John 6:57 Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood abides in me, and I in him. John 6:58 Just as the living Father has sent me and I live because of the Father, so also whoever eats me, the same shall live because of me. John 6:59 This is the bread that descends from heaven. It is not like the manna that your fathers ate, for they died. Whoever eats this bread shall live forever.” Matthew 28:18 And Jesus, drawing near, spoke to them, saying: “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Matthew 28:19 Therefore, go forth and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, Matthew 28:20 teaching them to observe all that I have ever commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, even to the consummation of the age.” The apologists of Catholic Answers are experts on The Catholic Faith and Church history. I think they do a wonderful job explaining topics and the misconceptions some have. The Catholic Church gave the Holy Bible to the world. We do not twist Scripture. It was Protestants who rewrote it, deleted verses, chapters and changed wording to it and the Ten Commandments, when they broke away from the only Church God Himself started. God is pleased when we follow His Commandments, Church, Teaching and Sacraments He instituted. We do not live by faith alone. James 2:14 My brothers, what benefit is there if someone claims to have faith, but he does not have works? How would faith be able to save him? James 2:15 So if a brother or sister is naked and daily in need of food, James 2:16 and if anyone of you were to say to them: “Go in peace, keep warm and nourished,” and yet not give them the things that are necessary for the body, of what benefit is this? James 2:17 Thus even faith, if it does not have works, is dead, in and of itself. James 2:18 Now someone may say: “You have faith, and I have works.” Show me your faith without works! But I will show you my faith by means of works. James 2:19 You believe that there is one God. You do well. But the demons also believe, and they tremble greatly. James 2:20 So then, are you willing to understand, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? James 2:21 Was not our father Abraham justified by means of works, by offering his son Isaac upon the altar? James 2:22 Do you see that faith was cooperating with his works, and that by means of works faith was brought to fulfillment? James 2:23 And so the Scripture was fulfilled which says: “Abraham believed God, and it was reputed to him unto justice.” And so he was called the friend of God. James 2:24 Do you see that a man is justified by means of works, and not by faith alone? James 2:25 Similarly also, Rahab, the harlot, was she not justified by works, by receiving the messengers and sending them out through another way? James 2:26 For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead. Romans 2:6 For he will render to each one according to his works: Romans 2:7 To those who, in accord with patient good works, seek glory and honor and incorruption, certainly, he will render eternal life. We love and honor Virgin Mary as God does. She is our mother as well. Revelation 12:13 And after the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who brought forth the male child. Revelation 12:17 And the dragon was angry at the woman. And so he went away to do battle with the remainder of her offspring, those who keep the commandments of God and who hold to the testimony of Jesus Christ.

Virgin Mary is our mother as well, she has eternal life in Heaven. Virgin Mary is in Revelations as The Arc of the New Covenant in 11:17. She is in the Heavens as Queen of Heaven and earth. She wears a crown of twelve stars, with the moon under her feet and clothed with the sun in 12. She is the one satan seeks to destroy, the one who gives birth to the holy one that rules with an iron rod, Jesus Christ. The birth pangs are a metaphor of the suffering she went through to give the world her Son. She was exempt from Original Sin. Revelation 11:19 And the temple of God was opened in heaven. And the Ark of his Testament was seen in his temple. And there were lightnings and voices and thunders, and an earthquake, and great hail. Revelation 12:1 And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon was under her feet, and on her head was a crown of twelve stars. Revelation 12:2 And being with child, she cried out while giving birth, and she was suffering in order to give birth. Revelation 12:3 And another sign was seen in heaven. And behold, a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads were seven diadems. Revelation 12:4 And his tail drew down a third part of the stars of heaven and cast them to the earth. And the dragon stood before the woman, who was about to give birth, so that, when she had brought forth, he might devour her son. Revelation 12:5 And she brought forth a male child, who was soon to rule all the nations with an iron rod. And her son was taken up to God and to his throne. Revelation 12:6 And the woman fled into solitude, where a place was being held ready by God, so that they might pasture her in that place for one thousand two hundred and sixty days. Revelation 12:13 And after the dragon saw that he had been thrown down to the earth, he pursued the woman who brought forth the male child. Revelation 12:17 And the dragon was angry at the woman. St Paul talks about us being saved, but only by being purged by fire first. 1 Corinthians 3:15 If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer its loss, but he himself will still be saved, but only as through fire. Jesus Christ saved us from Original Sin if we’re baptized with The Holy Spirit. Sins committed after have to be confessed, absolved and penance served to be forgiven by God. That’s why He instituted Sacrament of Reconciliation. 2 Corinthians 5:18 But all is of God, who has reconciled us to himself through Christ, and who has given us the ministry of reconciliation. John 20:23 Those whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them, and those whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.” When we commit mortal sin, we gave our permission to be separated from God, if we die in this state, without getting absolution, we are separated from Him for eternity. No prayers can save us. If we die with venial sin, we have to be purged from every taint of sin before we can enter Heaven. Prayers of others, indulgences, having used Holy Water through life, praying The Rosary, visiting the Adoration Chapel and receiving Holy Communion through life shorten our time getting purged. God will not allow anyone impure into Heaven. Revelation 21:27 There shall not enter into it anything defiled, nor anything causing an abomination, nor anything false, but only those who have been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb.

@@southernlady1109 That verse has nothing to do with OUR suffering but only about the WORKS. Purgatory as defined by the RCC is a place where people suffer to get into heaven. If that idea were true, then we can save ourselves, and it makes us more important than we are. You must be perfect (complete) to be in heaven. Who is the ONLY righteous one? As Jesus said, “only God as good”. And Christ is our ONLY Mediator (no saints, no creatures, no humans, etc) 1 Tim 2:5 Therefore we wrap ourselves with the righteousness of Christ, leaning only on what HE has done “once for all”.

@@kkdoc7864Did you read the verse? 1 Corinthians 3:15 If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer its loss, but HE HIMSELF WILL STILL BE SAVED, BUT ONLY AS THROUGH FIRE. We will suffer the loss of our works, but we will be saved through fire. Jesus Christ said we have to pick up our Cross and carry it (suffer) to be considered His followers. What makes you think you are above suffering for your God when He suffered so much for you. We are to strive to be perfect as God is perfect. Matthew 5:48 Therefore, be perfect, even as your heavenly Father is perfect.” Jesus Christ is our only mediator with our Father. Virgin Mary is our advocate with her Son, Jesus Christ. We can never have too many people praying for us, especially in these times. Jesus doesn’t tell His Mother no. Like when she intervened at the Wedding in Cana, she spoke and He took action! Having the “just” in Heaven prayers is awesome as God heeds prayers of the just. Pro 15:29, Jm 5:14-16. Jesus did not die on the Cross to save us from all sin that we would commit through life or He wouldn’t have given authority and orders to His apostles to forgive our sins. 2 Cor 5:18-19, Jn 20:21-23, Mt 18:18.

@@southernlady1109 Perfect actually means complete. And all you need is faith in Christ and what he did. We do not need dead people to intercede for us 1Tim 2:5. We believers are a “royal priesthood”. We need only to confess our sins directly to Christ and He is “faithful and just to forgive …”. That is why when Jesus died on the cross, His “once for all” sacrifice (debunks idea of a mass), the veil of the temple was torn ,in two allowing us direct access to the throne room. Priests were a thing of the Old Covenant. They were needed to offer blood sacrifice for sins UNTIL the Messiah gave the ultimate sacrifice ending the need for priests, especially that we can go directly to God. Faith was counted as righteousness for Abraham (as it was for Cornelius who received the Holy Spirit long before he was baptized) and the thief on the cross. Perfection or completeness can NEVER be attained by us. As Jesus so clearly said,”Only God is good “. So how do we become righteous? It’s certainly not by works unless you say that good works give life to the faith that saves us.

God does not need it but the action of giving, thinking of others, being charitable and sharing our resources is beneficial to us.

Praise God. God doesn't need money but people do, especially people who are poor or under circumstances x people may need your help. Give if you want to give. We don't force you. But it may be held to you on judgement day if we completely neglect those who need our mercy. Be merciful is one of the key teachings. Praise God.
