I’m fairly certain this is douay rhiems for the psalms. Nice review. I think this office reaches a lot of different people… it’s good for developing a prayer routine, good if you want some exposure to Latin in a non intimidating way, or if you want to get into chant. Also, it’s worth noting that Matins actually does rotate the psalms/readings on a 3-day cycle!

Very good insight on Matins! Thanks again for the donation

I wish Catholics wouldn’t look at Latin as intimidating but embraced it. Latin is and should be such a beautiful part of worship, you don’t find in the other Christian churches.

Nice review! Ive used the angelus press version quite a bit and still really enjoy it. Currently I'm trying out some other offices but i am looking forward to breaking out the lobvm again. I was a bit concerned initially about how repetitive this version is since practically every day is the same readings, but I've done certain of the hours so many times now that I've got a portions of those hours memorized which is kind of nice.
@ConvincedCatholicism Жыл бұрын
It’s definitely got its pros and cons! I want to check out the version by Catholic Book Publishing Company. May I suggest the Little Office of Baltimore?
@jess96154 Жыл бұрын
@@ConvincedCatholicism thanks for the suggestion. I own the little office of Baltimore and have done a few of the hours. The book itself is very well constructed and the formatting is great. I like the more referent English and the hours themselves have a similarity to the pre conciliar office which is nice. My only hang ups are that the translations are a bit different than I'm used to (although still better than the modern loth) and there's no Latin. I should give it another chance sometime though. I know people that really enjoy it.

The Bible readings or "little chapters" are Douay-Rheims: Bishop Challoner revised edition. But the Psalms and "ordinary canticles" (Magnificat, Benedictus, Benedicite) are neither the original nor revised DR, but some other "old-english" translation specifically for the songs (like the grail Psalter for the modern LOTH). I haven't been able to pin down where it's from yet. My next step is to contact Baronius for the source, as I personally love this translation. Hope this helps! Just discovered your channel and it's a godsend for an amateur liturgist like myself. Thank you.

I think this office was my first prayer book I ever used. Obviously it wasn’t this specific version produced by Baronius but it nevertheless was a beat up copy of a pre-Vatican II Little office of the Blessed Virgin that I found in my college library.

Glad I finally got my hands on a Pre Vatican II edition. I am sure the real Post Vatican II version is fine too. I was just put off by the one I reviewed earlier. I am sure you got a lot of grace from this book!
@KatherineWeasley Жыл бұрын
@@ConvincedCatholicism The post-Vatican II version is much different than the traditional office. It aligns more with the LOTH, I think. Catholic Book Publishing Company publishes it. I picked up a copy from Amazon to compare with the traditional Little Office and it is a complete redesign emphazing Morning and Evening Prayer. The other hours are in a separate section in the back of the book. So if someone wanted to do the entire office they would need to flip back and forth. There are also multiple options to pick from for readings. I think if one wants to solely focus on Lauds and Vespers they can use the post-V2 version. I much prefer the traditional office layout; easier to navigate

I recently purchased this book only to find that the gold edging had bled onto at least 1/3 of the pages. It was a struggle to get a refund. All the copies in the bookshops are vacuum sealed making it impossible to check the quality prior to purchase.

@ConvincedCatholicismАй бұрын
I am not sure if I will ever do a video tutorial on this. There really isn’t any flipping back and forth. Matins is the early morning Lauds is 6 or 7 AM Prime is 7 or 8 AM Terce is at 9 or 10 AM Sext is at noon None is at 3 or 4 PM Vespers is in the evening and Compline is before you go to bed I recommend you start with Lauds, Vespers, and Compline. The Office has three versions. You choose the version based on what time of the year it is. We are in Advent so choose office 2. If you make a mistake don’t sweat it. God and the Blessed Mother are in love with your effort and willingness to pray. God bless you

I love this addition, I pray it during Advent and Christmas. The rest of the year I pray the Breviarium Romanum from Barionius Press. I have several books from them and they were all perfect, so sorry several of yours had bad flaws. The Little Office is leather, my favorite word while praying it is “superadded”😂

@@ConvincedCatholicism It is wonderful, so much better than the Liturgy of the Hours ( in my opinion) my only problem is I can’t figure out the nocturnes. Matins is my favorite office and I am praying 12 psalms, I’m sure that’s not correct. I’ve read the instructions many times and I can’t find where it says what nocturnes to pray and which ones not to. So I do it all. Would love some instruction on that.

I just want to comment, the earlier editions of this one by Baronious Press DID include a collects card that had all the conclusions on them, in addition to the Gloria Patri. Any edition before the 2022 printings had this card. All the newest printings no longer include it. My guess is they are trying to cut costs. Sad, because Baronious Press had a reputation for producing such high quality Catholic books, now they're slipping.
@ConvincedCatholicism Жыл бұрын
This is really good information! I have had mixed feelings about Baronius press. I would love the 3 vol breviary. I don’t know if $350 plus bucks is justified.
@scottgauley7722 Жыл бұрын
@@ConvincedCatholicism When you consider the effort that went into producing that breviary, it is worth it. They worked very hard to make that translation. It is one of the few Roman Breviaries that is in both Latin and English. If you look online for complete breviaries in just Latin, those are usually 2 volumes and sell on average for $300 nowadays.

I do not like this edition. Because there are two QC issues one the ribbons immediately started fraying. And loose stitching. The third issue I have is why aren’t the conclusions to the final prayers printed at least once? The Angelus press version has a dedicated page explaining the conclusions and at least are printed in the back. This edition. Has ‘Through the same Lord, &c. R. Amen.’ This edition fails to print at least once the conclusion and just expects the reader to know it. I may have missed it but I have rigorously looked through and cannot find it. Terrible overpriced edition.
