I know this because the RCC basically added all of the apocryphal books they are blatantly false just read Ecclesiastes and then Ecclesiasticus it is obviously mans word and not God’s also the Jews never accepted the apocryphal books into their Cannon of books of God so that’s is why Protestants don’t add them we don’t take away from God’s word we don’t add books due to tradition Sincerely, An ex- catholic (by the grace of God)

It was Martin Luther who removed the Old Testament books he did not agree with. Until his time, the universal Christian Church was in agreement on the canon of Scripture which followed the Septuagint. If you’d like some more references, Hector, I’d be happy to provide them. May God bless you.

The entire canon of Scripture was fixed at the Councils of Hippo and Carthage before the end of the 300s. The Councils in the Middle Ages (Florence and Trent) merely restated what has already been previously defined.

I bought the Ignatius Catholic Bible, RSV, Revised Edition yesterday. Very excited. In the future I want to buy a Douay-Rheims/Vulgate bilingual and the Greek text.

Those are the 2 best Catholic versions available. The "New American" and the "Jerusalem" are also legitimate options. But I prefer the Catholic RSV. (And if I'm feeling especially old school, the 'Douay Rheims.' )

Love it. I had a friend once tell me that Catholics aren’t Christian. She apparently had forgotten that my entire family is Catholic...thanks for posting this. I’ve been getting confused about bibles lately, have been wanting to read and get a better understanding of my family’s faith because I’m planning an extended visit to my grandparents and know it would make them happy. I wasn’t raised Catholic myself though, so it’s been overwhelming to say the least.

Witch Hazel, Jesus, Paul, and Peter warned us about false prophets. Anyone who says Catholics are not Christians are false prophets or are quoting false prophets. There are well over 30,000 protestant denominations each with it's own set of beliefs. How can anyone take them seriously. And the leaders are always competing for members so they can get more money. So they have to attack other churches, even the one and only religion started by Jesus Christ. Remind your "friend" that to attack the Catholic church is very risky. Jesus said he would send the Holy Spirit to guide the His church, and, He said that sins against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven in this life or the next life.

Amanda..I honor you! You are a strong Catholic Women. In my youth I came across Scott hanna, Patrick Madrid, Michael Voris sermon on how the bible is a catholic book. It came from the church that Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ established himself The Catholic Church. Luther Then came with the Sola Scriptura and then came all these divisions and Protestants. I'm so happy to hear strong Catholic women like you. I still love bible based churches and the love of Christ that they hold dear in their hearts but our Church is the true church the mother of all. I came across your postings for the first time today and I must as I watched your videos, you cannot imagine how proud and blessed I felt to be Catholic. Your exemplary lifestyle is a true source of inspiration for me, as I'm sure it is for so many others. The Georgian Bible has all four books of Maccabees, while most Orthodox Bibles only have all three. They're not really read that often in church though. (However, the Prayer of Manasseh, which is found only in the Orthodox Bible, is chanted at every Great Compline service.)

OWN your Faith, Girl! I'm not Catholic and I was once told I could never be because I am divorced...but I will champion any true follower of Christ. We don't need Dividers these days. We can argue semantics but we are all the Body of Christ. My first Bible was an NAB I bought with my own money in 1991 (I was 15)...I didn't know jack about any of it but I liked the pictures of Paul Ii and the maps. i now have 2 KJVs, 2 NIVs, an NRSV and an ESV (plus a greek lexicon & Nestle's 25th, thanks to a Quaker friend) and I still reach for my trusty NAB, great notes and easy to read. OWN it! Why so nervous?

Even divorced Catholics are welcome to be in full Communion with the church :) It is only a question when Catholic has been married in the church (sacramental marriage) who wishes to re-marry. If you were married in a civil ceremony you could most likely get an Annulment and re-marry :) If not, you are still most welcome in the church and to partake in Communion - if you convert in full. There is a few videos about this on here. Check out the one from our POPE :) You ARE WELCOME in the Church :)

I almost laughed at your talk about the Precious Moments missing books- I'm protestant and the first time I got hold of one with the other books I was like 'where did these come from?' LOL! I wish I'd known the importance of reading God's word when I was young like you. I'm finally serious about it thanks to the church (same denomination) taking it seriously. I never knew from all the years growing up that I should read it for myself and not just the scattered verses in church and Sunday school.

You were right to delete the comment. Protestants who say 'Sola Scriptura' don't realise books were removed at the time of the Reformation (largely because they supported Catholic teaching) and even words changed. Luke 1:28 where they changed 'full of grace' to 'highly favoured' and Genesis 3:15 where they changed 'she' to 'it' or 'he' - thus obliterating God's words about Our Lady.

My daily Bible is the good old Douay-Rheims. Language majestic and accurate--held to be the most accurate translation. I have a number of others, several in other languages, for reference, but my version for daily reading and studying is and will always be the DRV.

I'm not a Christian(specifically was Catholic, now nonreligious) any longer, but I was always "academically oriented". Which Bible version is used depended on what you are academically studying. If you want to know the Bible's relationship to history, the King James version was the standard for most Protestants historically. If you are studying the text, my personal opinion is that the New Revised Standard Version (NRSV) holds closest to the original Greek New Testament, but that opinion is far from universal and there is no consensus. So the standard English translation used for academic study is the NRSV, in particular the Oxford Annotated Bible is widely used in major universities. It has the great advantage of being ecumenical, translated by people with a wide variety of theological viewpoints, rather than sectarian translations like the New World or NIV Bibles; and of being modern and thus based on a pretty up-to-date set of manuscript traditions, where the KJV (for example) suffers simply because the translators had less to go on. If I’m discussing something that depends on details in a specific verse, I look at sites like Bible Gateway or Bible softwares which can show you dozens of translations in parallel. That way, I’m not at the mercy of any one possibly flawed translation. You can also find online interlinear texts that let you see the original Hebrew (or Aramaic or Greek, depending on the book). Of course, if you want to study it seriously in a genuine academic setting, you really should learn Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek (and probably Syriac and Latin, and maybe German). I don’t have the time to go to those lengths; if I ever say that I read the Bible ‘academically’, I simply mean ‘for learning as opposed to devotionally or for mere entertainment’. I would recommend, however, that if you want to academically study the Bible, you need a Greek New Testament and a Hebrew Old Testament, a Greek Lexicon and Grammar, a Hebrew Lexicon and Grammar, and several years of study. That may seem like a lot, but the Bible is worth it. I cannot describe the feeling that came over me when I visited the archives of the University of Michigan Ann Arbor and got to see P46 (one of the oldest extant manuscripts of the New Testament). I was looking at an 1800 year old document and I could understand it. There is no feeling like reading Jesus or King David in his own words. Definitely worth a few years of study, and you will build a relationship with the text that you won't from a translation. Thanks for the video.

Cool video! The Ignatius Bible is my favorite too! That and the Didache Bible (Ignatius) from MTF. Highly recommended if you don’t already have it. Also, if you’re curious, Baronius Press offers really handsome Douay-Rheims bibles, as well as a Knox Bible that reads kind of like a story. They also have this really fancy one that has the DR translation and the Latin Vulgate text side by side; it also has three additional books (3 & 4 Esdras, Prayer of Manasses) for posterity “lest they perish entirely” (St. Jerome). In case you’re interested! :)

I love Latin also. I have a book written by saint alphonsus de liguori entitled: explanation of the psalms and canticles translated both in English and Latin. It change my lifeblood forever. Note hes a doctor of the church and I know now the Power of the psalms and their true meaning. Amanda you are so amazing to share your bibles

I waited patiently for the Didache Bible to come out with a leather bound edition & it was definitely worth waiting for. It is my new favorite Bible! The translation is RSV2CE and it has plentiful footnotes, commentary, cross referenced to the Catechism and is in an extremely reader friendly format. It is like having the Bible & Catechism all in one. It is the perfect blend of everyday primary & study Bible.

The main problem with the NAB and NABRE bibles are the USCCB (who owns the copyright) requires them to be printed with the footnotes, almost all of which are critical of the bible itself, and cast doubt on even the facts surrounding the events in the text. My “favorite” footnote was the one where the NABRE says that the purpose of the crown of thorns wasn’t torture, but to mimic the crowns of Greek kings... uh, right. Look it up. I don’t recommend these bibles to anyone until they remove the notes. In the meantime, Cambridge still makes their KJV Cameo with the Apocrypha included.

I just recently found your channel and love this video! I have the same Precious Moments bible but in mint green. I wanted it so bad because it was Precious Moments and my mom finally got it for me if though it was not a catholic bible. My current favorite bibles are NRSV XL Catholic edition(need the large print), NRSV Catholic Women’s Devotional Bible and The New Jerusalem Bible, I found Brand new last year at a used bookstore. Your video made me pull out all my old bibles and missals. I was fun to look at ones from my childhood. :)

Goodness gracious! Suddenly I feel Bible poor, I only have three Bibles. My favorite is the Douay-Rheims version. My mom gave it to me right after I came home from Vietnam in November of 1969. I had just turned 20 and struggled to understand some parts of my new Bible because it is written in old English. Now I can breeze through it quite easily. The fact that I have read it from cover to cover three times might have something to do with that. I have to read it over and over again because each time I read it I see things that just didn't register with me before. For example, in 1 Corinthians 1 - 7, St. Paul says that if we have all sorts of gifts and talents (paraphrasing) like tongues, prophecy, healing, faith to move mountains, and give all we have to the poor but do not have charity, then we are NOTHING. I used to think that by Charity, Paul meant giving to the poor. But actually, he means benevolent goodwill or love of humanity (Merriam -Webster). Imagine, if we all truly practiced Christianity and loved one another as Jesus taught us, there would be no need for police, or the military or prisons, etc.

Dear Amanda: You are a gem. I am an old, retired Protestant pastor--even an evangelical one--but I know someone who loves our Triune God when I hear and see them. I agree with Sandra Steyl's comment below mine: "You go, girl!!!" Could you, perhaps, tell me what % of Catholics--just a guess will do--are like you with regard to being real Bible enthusiasts and study it diligently? I know that the vast majority of Mainline Protestants don't actually "study" their Bibles and even Evangelicals I would estimate it to be only about 1/3rd who do. In other words, Amanda, how rare are you among Catholics regarding truly studying the Bible versus merely "revering" it? We Evangelicals have an opinion that you Catholics don't "know your Bibles." Excellent collection of Bibles. My favorite Bible as a Catholic is the DOUAY RHEIMS BIBLE. It seems to me after doing mountains of research to be the most reliable and accurate translation. ... although I do use many other translations ( RSVCE, ESVCE, NABCE, KJV 1611, NKJV, NASB, Orthodox Bible ,) to gain a wide perspective the DRB is a must for all Catholics who want to dig deep and get serious about there Bible reading. If I could only have one Bible it would be the DRB.

LOL, we have the same "problem," an abundance of Bibles. I personally have 12 various bibles ranging from the Scofield Study Bible to the Vulgate and even beautiful copy of the Chumash (Hebrew and English) and a Mormon Quad (from twenty years ago when I was Mormon curious). The Angelus 1962 missal is nice. Since you’re a Latin Mass attendee you should check out the St. Andrew Missal from Bonaventure, reprint of the 1945 edition, it has Dom Guéranger’s excellent descriptions of the significance of each day’s Mass. I have intentions of burning my copy of the MTF Roman Missal that you’ve shown, since it’s clear now that the Mass of Paul VI, the prevalent form, is just an abomination meant to downplay the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and make it a Lutheran style celebration. I have not yet gotten around to burning it yet since I will do this on the grill and it seems like a waste of charcoal.

I read the greek septaugint as my scripture. I use the Reader's edition Septuagint. Usually only Elderly scholars who live in seclusion buy it as it cost me 150 states of united amerika dollars.

Guilty of owning too many Bibles too, but I have to have one in my car, just in case, then I am a big fan of Scott hahn so I have the ignatius study Bible and ecopy too, at least 7 new testaments and a couple of new Jerusalem bibles. I also have a few study bibles from the Bible study program I attended. So yeah we catholics not only read the Bible, we pray it too and I’m sure we own too many copies of it as well.

I'm Catholic Church organist. But the "New King James" really isn't so bad. As far as Catholic Bibles go, the "New American" is a legitimate option, but not my favorite. The Catholic RSV is my favorite. The RSV was the only Bible accepted by Catholics, Anglicans, Eastern Orthodox and many Protestants. (And the 2nd ed. is alright too.) The 2nd ed. is used in the Church of England as well. If you like the Latin/Tridentine Mass you should go to KZbin and watch the interesting film "The Conflict" 1973.

Gal, you've got some fine Bibles there. You've made good choices. My favourite R.C. Bible is the Douay-Rheims-Challoner version, but I assume that your Latin-English 1962 Missal includes the lections in that great traditional translation.

Yes, my Latin-English Missal includes the Douay-Rheims translation. I also use a Bible software called Verbum in which I also have multiple different translations to cross-reference.

I’m pretty sure that is exactly what the troll meant. That’s one reason I made this video. I have a Protestant Bible as well as quite a few Catholic ones. 🙂

Really cool bible library! One question though: Is The New American Standard translation a specifically Catholic translation, or is was it meant to be ecumenical?

The New American Standard (NSA) is different from the New American Bible (NAB). The NAB is a Catholic translation and the one approved for use in the Liturgy in the US and Canada.

Ok! Thanks for the info :) I actually have an NRSV bible that has the Apocrapha in it. I'm a Lutheran, but it feels weird to not have a bible without them.

I recommend the Fireside Bible with 100 page dictionary. Also the Saint Joseph Edition The New American Bible. it has a lot of color photos and Black and white ones as well.

I thought I was bad lol. I've the 1914 edition of Douay-Rheims Bible, 1952 Douay-Rheims New Testament, RSV-CE, NIV New Testament, Jerusalem Bible New Testament, a KJV someone put through my letterbox (don't know what to do with,, don't use it but don't want to throw it out either) and I have the CPDV Bible app along with a few more on my phone.

I would love to get a hold of the Ignatius Bible. The leather one. I've been reading Christian Bibles. I'm missing those other books, raised Catholic. But new to the Word of God. So no really sure how to get my hands on catholic bibles.

I am waiting for the Ignatious study Bible to include both All of the Old Testament and the New Testament, too. That may be an awfully fat volume, but, nonetheless, it's the one to have, whenever it comes out. I love the Latin Mass, like you do. Alas, it is not to be found for hundreds of miles around here in the Abitibi.

Some of the Old Testament books are currently out. I know that Genesis and Exodus are for sure. They are a wonderful reference. It will be amazing when there is a full Ignatius Study Bible... but I don't know if I'll be able to carry it around with me. :-)

Order an Didache bible either from Ignatius press or midwest theological forum. It has notes, maps and apologetics inserts and contains the full catholic bible. MTF is actually having a 20% sale right now.
