Where does it say Peter is the rock? I thought Jesus is the rock?

Hi Angela, Turn to Matthew 16:18 where Jesus says to Peter: "And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this Rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it." Jesus appoints Peter the head of the apostles, who will then make up the first "ecclesia" - an assembly or church - though at the time it was probably expected to remain a sect within Judaism. Interestingly, the name that Jesus gives Peter in this passage (who up to now has only been known only as Simon) is "Petros" in Greek, a pun on Rock, which in Greek is "Petra." Jesus is responding to Peter's robust confession of faith - a rock in itself! - that Jesus is "the Messiah, the son of the living God." Jesus proclaims that this can only have been made known to Peter by direct inspiration from God himself. Besides the ecclesial Rock who is Peter, the term "Rock of faith" appears often in Christian dialogue, the gospel is also thought of as a Rock, and in places like the ageless hymn "Rock of Ages" and elsewhere it is Jesus himself who is named the Rock, as you noted. Aren't we blessed as Christians to have such Rocks to steady us on the path? Hope this helps.

Hi Griselda, on most of these we would politely like to disagree with you. With the sacrament of Baptism, Jesus instituted this himself by saying “make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Spirit…” (MT 28:19). Regarding our Mass, he said at the Last Supper to “...do this in memory of me”, which is what we are doing. Most of the rituals in the Catholic Church have a scriptural basis, and everything we do is firmly rooted in the teachings of Jesus.

Modern Popes seek dialogue with all religious and secular leaders in the interest of world peace and understanding. The Mideast is of particular interest to Pope Francis because of the persecution of Christians that persist in those regions. But this is nothing new. Nostra Aetate was published during Vatican II (the mid 60’s) and calls for dialogue and respect for the other Abrahamic religions (Judaism and Islam). It is important to remember that these religions, along with Christianity, profess the same God. This joins us as spiritual brothers and sisters, even though we have different ways of perceiving and worshiping God. As for “Chrislam”, this is a movement that started in Nigeria in the late 70’s, so it too is far from new. It is a melding of Christianity and Islam into one faith, but it is inherently questionable as there are major doctrinal differences between the two faiths. The most important is the Christian belief in Jesus as the Son of God and Third Person of the Trinity. Islam looks at this as polytheism. These differences, however, should not sever our bonds of kinship.
