RESPONSE #1: SCRIPTURE ALONE (SOLA SCRIPTURA) Is the Bible the final authority of your life? “If a teaching isn’t explicit in the Bible, then we don’t accept it as doctrine!” That belief, is commonly known as sola scriptura, or scripture alone. Yet truly the doctrine of sola scriptura is the belief that Scripture is the only infallible authority in the Church. Is that true? of 1 6 As we both know the Bible did not drop down out of the sky with a post-it note stuck to it that said, “here is the Word of God, this is all you will need. Feel free to make copies as you like.” Much of the Old Testament started out as memorized stories (oral traditions) and was eventually written down, and collected together. The books of the Old Testament were written between 1500 BC and 150 BC and included the 1. The Law (Torah), 2. The Prophets (Nebi’im) and 3. The Writings (Ketubim). The first translation into Greek was The Septuagint around 250 BC. The four Gospels also started out as oral tradition and eventually were written down. And it was the decision of the early Church guided by the Holy Spirit to do two important things: (1) to put together a canon of Sacred Scripture; and (2) to decide what belonged to the Canon and what didn’t. The Canon or list of books in the Bible was first recognized in the year 382 at the Council of Rome, under Pope Damascus 1st. And this decision was ratified again in the Year 393 at the Council of Hippo, and again in the year 397 at the Council of Carthage. Imagine that, for over 300 years the Church existed without the Bible as We know it. 1 Cor 4:6, “Not to think beyond what is written.” Is this a defense of Scripture Alone? • “What is written” is usually a reference to the Old Testament (1 Cor 1:19, 1:31, 3:19-20) and thus if taken literally would render the New Testament as non-Scripture. • Paul, in saying, “do not go beyond what is written,” was not teaching sola scriptura. If he had, he would have been advocating one of four principles, which are inconsistent with the rest of his theology: (1) Accept as authoritative only the Old Testament writings; (2) accept as authoritative only the Old Testament writings and the New Testament writings penned as of the date Paul wrote 1 Corinthians (circa A.D. 56); (3) accept as authoritative orally transmitted doctrine only until it has been reduced to writing (scripture) and only while the apostles are alive, then disregard all oral tradition and adhere only to what is written; or (4) the most extreme position, accept as authoritative only doctrine that has been reduced to writing. • No Protestant would agree with option one, that the Old Testament is a sufficient authority in matters of doctrine. Nor would he accept option two, for this would mean all New Testament books written after the year 56 would not qualify under the 1 Corinthians 4:6 guideline. Option three fails because in order for sola scriptura to be a “biblical” doctrine there must be, by definition, at least one Bible verse which says Scripture is sufficient, or that oral Tradition is to be disregarded once Scripture has supplanted it, or that Scripture is superior to oral Tradition. Option four is likewise untenable because it contradicts Paul’s of 2 6 express command to “Stand fast and hold firm to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours” (2 Thessalonians 2:15). • And then there’s that small matter of the unity of doctrine among the apostles. If Paul had been promulgating sola scriptura in 1 Corinthians 4:6 he would have been in conflict with the practice of the rest of the apostles. Most of the apostles never wrote a single line of Scripture; instead they transmitted the deposit of faith orally. Did their oral teachings carry any less weight of authority than the written teachings of Paul or Peter or John? • Another example: Paul remained in Ephesus for over two years teaching the faith. Yet if Paul had included sola scriptura among the doctrines which comprised “the entire plan of God” - especially in the sense of option three - why didn’t he simply say so? Why didn’t he tell the Ephesians, “Now that I’ve written you this letter (all six chapters), you can disregard my two years worth of oral teachings and consider the OT and this document to be your sole authority”? Nowhere in his epistles does Paul even hint at such a thing.

The Early Church • An examination of first-, second-, and third-century Church writings shows the early Christians did not believe in sola scriptura (in fact Irenaeus of Lyons [A.D. 140-202] delivered a withering attack on the notion in Against Heresies. So it was not a subject of discussion in any early Church councils, nor was it mentioned in any of the many creeds formulated by the early Church. 2 Tim 3:16-17 does not even hint at Scripture being the sole rule of faith. It says that Scripture is inspired and necessary-a rule of faith-but in no way does it teach that Scripture alone is all one needs to determine the truth about faith and morals in the Church. This verse is specifically addressed to members of the hierarchy. It is a pastoral epistle, written to a young bishop Paul had ordained Not only does the text not say Scripture alone, but Paul’s exhortation for Timothy to study the word of God is in the context of an exhortation to “preach the word” as a minister of Christ. To use this text to claim that sola scriptura is being taught to the average layperson is-to borrow a phrase from Paul-going far “beyond what is written” (1 Cor. 4:6).

The following are some key teachings on what the Church actually teaches about the “Living Word of God”: Catechism 104, In Sacred Scripture, the Church constantly finds her nourishment and her strength, for she welcomes it not as a human word, “but as what it really is, the word of God.” Catechism 105, God is the author of Sacred Scripture. “The divinely revealed realities, which are contained and presented in the text of Sacred Scripture, have been written down under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.” “For Holy Mother Church, relying on the faith of the apostolic age, accepts as sacred and canonical the books of the Old and the New Testaments, whole and entire, with all their parts, on the grounds that, of 3 6 written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, they have God as their author, and have been handed on as such to the Church herself.” Catechism 107, The inspired books teach the truth. “Since therefore all that the inspired authors or sacred writers affirm should be regarded as affirmed by the Holy Spirit, we must acknowledge that the books of Scripture firmly, faithfully, and without error teach that truth which God, for the sake of our salvation, wished to see confided to the Sacred Scriptures.” Catechism 108, Still, the Christian faith is not a “religion of the book.” Christianity is the religion of the “Word” of God, a word which is “not a written and mute word, but the Word is incarnate and living.” If the Scriptures are not to remain a dead letter, Christ, the eternal Word of the living God, must, through the Holy Spirit, “open [our] minds to understand the Scriptures.” Catechism 81, “Sacred Scripture is the speech of God as it is put down in writing under the breath of the Holy Spirit.” “And [Holy] Tradition transmits in its entirety the Word of God which has been entrusted to the apostles by Christ the Lord and the Holy Spirit. It transmits it to the successors of the apostles so that, enlightened by the Spirit of truth, they may faithfully preserve, expound and spread it abroad by their preaching.” Catechism 82, As a result the Church, to whom the transmission and interpretation of Revelation is entrusted, “does not derive her certainty about all revealed truths from the holy Scriptures alone. Both Scripture and Tradition must be accepted and honored with equal sentiments of devotion and reverence.” Catechism 85, “The task of giving an authentic interpretation of the Word of God, whether in its written form or in the form of Tradition, has been entrusted to the living teaching office of the Church alone.” Catechism 86, “Yet this Magisterium is not superior to the Word of God, but is its servant. It teaches only what has been handed on to it. At the divine command and with the help of the Holy Spirit, it listens to this devotedly, guards it with dedication and expounds it faithfully. All that it proposes for belief as being divinely revealed is drawn from this single deposit of faith.”

Pastor Ian: • In your attempt to evade the biblical and historical evidence of the Church’s magisterial authority you insist on seeing in the Bible a doctrine which simply isn’t there. • Protestants say that trusting oral tradition violates Paul’s admonition not to “go beyond what is written” (1 Cor. 4:6), but Catholics follow the biblical command to hold to apostolic traditions whether they are “by word of mouth or by letter” (2 Thess. 2:15). of 4 6 • Sola Scriptura is unreasonable, unbiblical, and unworkable. • Unreasonable: The Protestant appeal to the sole authority of Scripture to defend sola scriptura is a textbook example of circular reasoning. • Unbiblical: 2 Timothy 3:16 does not claim Scripture to be the sole rule of faith for Christians. • Unworkable: The silence of Scripture on sola scriptura is deafening. But when it comes to the true authority of Scripture and Tradition and to the teaching and governing authority of the Church, the text is clear. Ex. Mt 18:17, “tell it to the church.” According to Scripture, the Church is the final court of appeal for the people of God in matters of faith, morals, and discipline • The historical record also tells us that Jesus Christ established a Church-not a book-to be the foundation of the Christian faith (Matt. 16:15-18; 18:15-18; cf. Eph. 2:20; 3:10, 20-21; 4:11-15; 1 Tim. 3:15; Heb. 13:7, 17). • Christ said of his Church, “He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me, and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me” (Luke 10:16). • John 16:13 does tells us that the Spirit will lead the apostles, and by extension, the Church, into truth. But it has nothing to say about sola scriptura or the nature or number of books in the canon. • The Bible teaches that apostolic (oral) Tradition is equal to Scripture. It is silent when it comes to sola scriptura, but it is remarkably clear in teaching that oral Tradition is just as much the word of God as Scripture is. • In what most scholars believe was the first book written in the New Testament, Paul said: “And we also thank God . . . that when you received the word of God which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God” (1 Thess. 2:13). According to Paul, the spoken words of the apostles were the word of God. • In fact, when Paul wrote his second letter to the Thessalonians, he urged Christians there to receive the oral and written Traditions as equally authoritative. This would be expected because both are the word of God: “So, then, brethren stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter” (2 Thess. 2:15). Brother to say that Catholics don’t know God’s will because the Church doesn’t teach the will of God is completely false, and frankly insulting. And yet I take no offense. But you are making a judgement that perhaps violates what the Bible says in James 4:12, “There is one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you that you judge your neighbor?”. Here are some questions for you to ponder: • If sola scriptura was revealed by Christ to the Apostles, why did He never command them to write anything down, and why did none of them reveal when these written instructions were complete and final, and the canon closed? of 5 6 • Sola scriptura is logically incoherent. And this becomes clear by asking a simple question that is assumed, but never addressed: “What books are part of Scripture?” • If you are going to claim Scripture is the sole infallible rule of faith, one must know what is in that Scripture. Otherwise, the doctrine and its claims become meaningless, if not false. • This is where sola scriptura falls apart: there is no inspired Table of Contents which would enable us to answer this question from Scripture. In other words, Scripture itself lacks an authoritative list of books. • I will write more about that in Response #2. Pastor Ian, thank you for your attention. May we be united in the truth of Christ Jesus. For “Behold, how good and pleasant it is when brothers dwell in unity!” (Psalm 133:1)

Quite a few times the Bible quotes Jesus as saying, "Follow me." Follow the teachings of the church? No. Follow the leader of the local church? No. Follow the commentators in the KZbin comments section? No. "Follow me," Jesus said. It's amazing that the Holy Spirit has graced some people to teach, some to lead, and others for other things. I acknowledge that when I fellowship with my brothers in Christ on Wednesday evenings, we all learn from one another; the Holy Spirit has imparted specific understandings to each of us as we pursue Christ (not the church); our fellowship makes evident that different levels of authority are at play regarding the word of God. The word of God is the final authority - not the only authority. Paul reminds the Gentiles (and so through them the rest of us) to test what we hear (the teachings of others) against Scripture; this includes any message of salvation that is not the Gospel of Jesus. So RCC presents the teaching of infant baptism; we test this against Scripture and the Gospel of Jesus and find that it doesn't align; this pattern holds with the RCC sacraments. I understand why Roman Catholics are so quick to defend their church. I understand that Roman Catholics default to the teachings of their church. I understand that Roman Catholics defer first to the teachings of their church. But that's the problem - it's always about the church in isolation or the church is mentioned before Jesus. The church is not Jesus. Jesus said to follow him.

Jesus Christ is the head of the catholic church that He build ONLY ONE CHURCH through His Apostle Peter only and the popes are the successors right from His Apostle Peter. And our Lord Jesus Christ is with us always IN THE HOLY EUCHARIST, waiting for all of us sinners to repent and to believe in Him and to receive Him with humble hearts in the form of bread and wine. Jesus is an Emmanuel (which means God with us). John 7-18 - Jesus warned us "he who on his own authority seek his own glory, but he who seeks the glory of GOD who sent HIM is true and in Him there is no falsehood". When Jesus build HIS CHURCH He called His Apostle Peter only. Mathew 16:18-19 - Jesus say "you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My Church and the powers of death shall not prevail against it. I will give you the key of the Kingdom of heaven and whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven". Luke 9:1-2 - Jesus called His 12 Apostles together and gave them power and authority over all demons and to cure diseases, and Jesus sent them out to preach the Kingdom of God and to heal. Luke 9:5 -"and wherever they do not receive you when you leave that town shake off the dust from your feet as a testimony against them". Luke 10:16 - Jesus told to His Apostles "he who hears you hears Me and he who rejects you rejects Me and he who rejects Me rejects GOD THE FATHER who sent Me". John 6:51 - Jesus say "I am the living bread which came down from heaven, if any one eats of this bread he will live forever and the bread which I shall give for the life of the world IS MY FLESH". John 6:42 - the jews said "is not this JESUS, the Son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How does HE now say "I have come down from heaven? Jesus answered them "do not murmur among yourselves."No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day". John 15:5 - Jesus say "I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing. 6) if a man does not abide in Me, he is cast forth as a branch and withers and the branches are gathered thrown into the fire and burned". John 10:9-10-11 - "I am the door, if any one enters by Me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. I am the good Shepherd. The good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep". John 10:25-26 - Jesus answered "I told you and you do not believe, the works that I do in My Father's name, they bear witness to Me, BUT YOU DO NOT BELIEVE BECAUSE YOU DO NOT BELONG TO MY SHEEP". Mark 13:5-6 - JESUS WARNED US "take heed that no one leads you astray. Many will come in My name saying, I am he and they will leads many astray". Mark 13:13 - JESUS TOLD TO HIS APOSTLES "AND YOU SHALL BE HATED BY ALL FOR MY NAME'S SAKE. BUT HE WHO ENDURES TO THE END WILL BE SAVED". Mark 13:22-23 - JESUS WARNED US "false christs and false prophets will arise and show signs and wonders, to lead astray, if possible the elect. But take heed, I HAVE TOLD YOU ALL THINGS BEFORE HAND".

RESPONSE #3 Man-Made Traditions vs Apostolic Tradition? 2 Thessalonians 2:15, “Therefore, brothers, stand firm and hold fast to the traditions that you were taught, either by an oral statement or by a letter of ours.” So Catholics actually follow the biblical command to hold to apostolic traditions whether they are “by word of mouth or by letter” (2 Thess. 2:15). These are the two ways that God the Father has taught us through our Lord Jesus, and his apostles: (1) orally and (2) by letters from the apostles; and St. Paul calls both of these “traditions.” But let’s take a step back and ask, “What is tradition?” Well, the English word, tradition, comes from the Latin word trādere, which means something that is handed on. For example, Jude 3 states, “I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints.” Handed-down in greek is paradidomi. And from this word also derives our English word - “Tradition.” In other Words, Tradition is something that is “Handed-Down.” Some traditions, like some of the Pharisees’ traditions, can be harmful. Others, being of merely human origin, are not authoritative. Scripture lumps both under the heading “traditions of men.” But not all traditions are in this category. For Christians, the Faith handed down to us from Christ and the apostles is of unparalleled importance. In Catholic circles, this passing down of the Faith is referred to as “Apostolic Tradition” (with a capital “T” to distinguish it from other, lesser, “lowercase” traditions). Capital-T traditions - or in other words -- Apostolic Traditions are doctrinal in nature - and therefore Unchangeable. These traditions are not Man-Made - they are “God-Made.” Traditions - with a “small t” - are “human traditions” -- that if they don’t go against a commandment are good. These are man-made, not doctrinal in nature - and therefore are changeable.
@eduardomontemayor44848 ай бұрын
Is Scripture the sole rule of faith for Christians? Not according to the Bible. While we must guard against merely human tradition, the Bible contains numerous references to the necessity of clinging to apostolic tradition. Thus Apostle Paul praised those who followed Tradition by telling the Corinthians, “I commend you because you remember me in everything and maintain the traditions even as I have delivered them to you” (1 Cor. 11:2), and he commands the Thessalonians, “So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught by us, either by word of mouth or by letter” (2 Thess. 2:15). He even goes so far as to order, “Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you keep away from any brother who is living in idleness and not in accord with the tradition that you received from us” (2 Thess. 3:6). To make sure that the apostolic tradition would be passed down after the deaths of the apostles, Paul told Timothy, “[W]hat you have heard from me before many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also” (2 Tim. 2:2). In this passage he refers to the first four generations of apostolic succession-his own generation, Timothy’s generation, the generation Timothy will teach, and the generation they in turn will teach. Bearing in mind that Paul wrote this letter just before he died (cf. 2 Tim. 4:6-8), Paul is exhorting the transmission of Apostolic Tradition across generations of Christian leaders.
@eduardomontemayor44848 ай бұрын
Now “faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes by the preaching of Christ” (Rom. 10:17). The Church must always be the living teacher. It is a mistake to limit “Christ’s word” to the written word only or to suggest that all his teachings were reduced to writing. The Bible nowhere supports either notion. Paul illustrated what apostolic tradition is: “For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received, that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the scriptures. . . . Whether then it was I or they, so we preach and so you believed” (1 Cor. 15:3,11). The first Christians “devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching” (Acts 2:42) long before there was a New Testament. The teaching Church, with its oral, apostolic tradition, was authoritative. Paul himself gives a quotation from Jesus that was handed down orally to him not from the Gospels: “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). This verse itself proves the existence and importance of Apostolic Tradition. How can we know which traditions are apostolic and which are merely human? The answer is the same as how we know which scriptures are apostolic and which are merely human-by listening to the magisterium or teaching authority of Christ’s Church. Without the Catholic Church’s teaching authority, we would not know with certainty which purported books of Scripture are authentic. If the Church revealed to us the canon of Scripture, it can also reveal to us the “canon of Tradition” by establishing which traditions have been passed down from the apostles. After all, the New Testament itself declares the Church to be “the pillar and foundation of the truth” (1 Tim. 3:15).
@eduardomontemayor44848 ай бұрын
The early Church Fathers, who were links in that chain of succession, recognized the necessity of the traditions that had been handed down from the apostles and guarded them scrupulously, as the following quotations show. Here are a few examples: Origen (A.D. 225) “Although there are many who believe that they themselves hold to the teachings of Christ, there are yet some among them who think differently from their predecessors. The teaching of the Church has indeed been handed down through an order of succession from the apostles and remains in the churches even to the present time. That alone is to be believed as the truth which is in no way at variance with ecclesiastical and apostolic tradition” (The Fundamental Doctrines 1:2). Athanasius (A.D. 330). “Again we write, again keeping to the apostolic traditions, we remind each other when we come together for prayer; and keeping the feast in common, with one mouth we truly give thanks to the Lord” (Festal Letters 2:7). Basil the Great (A.D. 375) “Of the dogmas and messages preserved in the Church, some we possess from written teaching and others we receive from the tradition of the apostles, handed on to us in mystery. (The Holy Spirit 27:66) Epiphanius of Salamis (A.D. 375) “It is needful also to make use of tradition, for not everything can be gotten from sacred Scripture. The holy apostles handed down some things in the scriptures, other things in tradition” (Medicine Chest Against All Heresies 61:6). Augustine (A.D. 400). “[T]he custom [of not rebaptizing converts] . . . may be supposed to have had its origin in apostolic tradition, just as there are many things which are observed by the whole Church, and therefore are fairly held to have been enjoined by the apostles, which yet are not mentioned in their writings” (On Baptism, Against the Donatists 5:23[31]. Now consider this: Given the fact that nowhere in Scripture is the doctrine of Sola Scriptura promoted or taught either explicitly or implicitly. And neither was it taught by the Apostles nor handed on to us through Apostolic Tradition. It means that your teaching on Sola Scripture is actually a man-made tradition.

Jesus founded Catholic Church not for it to be in error for 1500 years until Protestant Reformation. Protestant is works of Satan

Through the grace of God I have been shown the truth about Catholicism, my reservations have been confirmed and more. Many blessings to teachers such as yourself. I feel so relieved not to be Catholic anymore, it was a heavy burden, an impossible mandate. I’ve since learned, according to the Council of Trent, I was actually excommunicated and cast into hell anyway. The fact that the NT has 2 anathemas, to love God and not to add to or change the gospel but the C of Trent has over 100 is despicable and demonically arrogant.

We tell them so they'll read the Bible for themselves and become filled with the Holy Spirit who does the work of saving them. And pointing out to their heart, the truth. I wish them the best. Amen.

My parents fled Spain in 1973 to get away from the state-church of General Franco and Catholicism. They raised us without any form of religious instruction. However, I was always interested in God our Father, so my parents bought me a children's book of Bible stories. They also sent me to Sunday school for Bible study. Today I am 53 and love the Lord Jesus very much. I learned through my ow studies not to trust Catholicism. My parents never actually spoke to me about its dangers. Yet, I came to my own conclusion about its counterfeitness. The Vatican is not to be trusted. It is under direct authority of the Devil. It has Persecuted Christians for many centuries and is now back to do it again.

#2 Response to Pastor Ian's Attacks on Catholics 66 Books or 73 Books in the Bible? The Catholic Church did not add books to the Bible. The seven books in question-Tobit, Judith, 1 and 2 Maccabees, Wisdom, Ecclesiasticus, and Baruch-are properly called the Deuterocanonical books. It should be noted that the first-century Christians-including our Lord Jesus and the apostles-effectively considered these seven books canonical. Why? Because they quoted from the Septuagint, a Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures that contained these seven books. The Septuagint was a popular translation of scripture because Greek was the common language of the entire Mediterranean world by the time of the Apostolic Church. More importantly, the Deuterocanonicals are clearly alluded to in the New Testament. In fact, it is not surprising that this is the translation-and canon-used by Christ and the New Testament writers: 300 of 350 quotations from the Old Testament in the New Testament are from the Septuagint. The remainder are often paraphrases of either the Hebrew or the Greek only. For example, Jesus, when discussing "human traditions" (Mark 7:6-8), quotes a version of Isaiah 29:13 found only in the Septuagint. How did The Septuagint or “the 70,” (LXX) come about? The early church father Eusebius, Bishop of Caesarea (269 -339) and a Christian historian wrote, “[King] Ptolemy, the son of Lagus, being very anxious to adorn the library, which he founded in Alexandria, with all the best extant writings of all men, asked from the inhabitants of Jerusalem to have their Scriptures translated into Greek. They... sent to Ptolemy seventy elders, the most experienced they had in the Scriptures and in both languages, and God thus wrought what he willed. But Ptolemy, wishing to make a trial of them in his own way, and being afraid lest they should have made some agreement to conceal by their translation the truth in the Scriptures, separated them from one another and commanded them all to write the same translation. And this they did in the case of all the books. But when they came together to Ptolemy, and compared each his own translation, God was glorified and the Scriptures were recognized as truly divine, for they all rendered the same things in the same words and the same names, from beginning to end, so that even the heathen who were present knew that the Scriptures had been translated by the inspiration of God.”

In A.D. 70 Jerusalem and the Temple were razed by the Romans, the Levitical priesthood was destroyed and the Jewish faith was hemorrhaging followers to the rapidly spreading belief that Jewish prophecy had been fulfilled in Jesus the Messiah. Because this belief spread most rapidly among the Jews of the Diaspora and the Gentiles of the eastern Mediterranean, the language of trade, koine Greek, and the Greek Septuagint was the common denominator between all the communities. Jewish Christian oral teaching competed successfully against traditional Jewish oral teaching, and it used Jewish Scripture to do it. This sparked two movements within non-Christian Judaism. First, Jewish scholars began debating whether or not the Christians' "Greek Scripture" was really Scripture. Second, around the year 200 , the rabbis began writing down Jewish religious and civil law and their commentaries on it, creating what would become the Talmud six centuries later. These Jewish scholars ultimately refused the deuterocanonical Old Testament books, probably because of theology (for example, 1 and 2 Maccabees teach the resurrection of the dead, while Wisdom chapters 1-5 contains an unsettlingly prophetic description of Christ's passion and death) and because they were written in Greek, not Hebrew. We both know that the New Testament lies hidden in the Old, while the Old is fulfilled in the New, the Old Testament is just as permeated with Christ as is the New. Those Jewish scholars (e.g. Council of Jamnia in AD. . 90) who rejected Christ rejected the guidance of the Holy Spirit and thus could not properly recognize either Old or New Testament Scripture. Luther ignored the fact that the non-Christian Jewish scholars upon whose opinion he relied for Old Testament canonicity rejected the entire New Testament. Now the canon of the entire Bible was essentially settled around the turn of the fourth century. Up until this time, there was disagreement over the canon, and some ten different canonical lists existed, none of which corresponded exactly to what the Bible now contains. Around this time there were no less than five instances when the canon was formally identified: the Synod of Rome (382), the Council of Hippo (393), the Council of Carthage (397), a letter from Pope Innocent I to Exsuperius, Bishop of Toulouse (405), and the Second Council of Carthage (419). In every instance, the canon was identical to what Catholic Bibles contain today. In other words, from the end of the fourth century on, in practice Christians accepted the Catholic Church’s decision in this matter. By the time of the Reformation, Christians had been using the same 73 books in their Bibles (46 in the Old Testament, 27 in the New Testament)-and thus considering them inspired-for more than 1,100 years. This practice changed with Martin Luther, who dropped the deuterocanonical books on nothing more than his own say-so. Protestantism as a whole has followed his lead in this regard.

The label “unscriptural” was first applied by the Protestant Reformers of the 16th century. The truth is, portions of these books contradict elements of Protestant doctrine (as in the case of 2 Maccabees 12, which clearly supports prayers for the dead and a belief in purgatory), and the “reformers” therefore needed some excuse to eliminate them from the canon. Roman Catholics accepted the canon of the Bible-the Alexandrian canon of the Old Testament-as a matter of uncontested faith. Since it was not a matter of controversy for sixteen centuries, there was no need to define the canon as infallible truth. When Martin Luther proposed the Palestinian canon, 39 books, in Hebrew in 1529 as the Old Testament canon, the Catholic Church, following the model of refuting error and defining biblically unrevealed truth set in Acts 15--accepting the Holy Spirit as revealing authority-defined once again, at the Council of Trent, 1563, the Old Testament canon of 46 books following the Alexandrian Greek Septuagint. After roughly three centuries of prayer and discussion, the Church essentially solved the problem during a forty-year burst of activity. In the Old Testament, Tobit, Judith, Wisdom, Sirach, Baruch, 1 and 2 Maccabees, parts of Esther (chapters 11-16), and parts of Daniel (3:24-90 and 13, 14) were recognized as inspired. In the New Testament, the Church accepted Hebrews, James, Jude, 2 Peter, 2 and 3 John, and Revelation. Each of the decrees and councils provided the same list of Scripture. No council or papal decree gave a different list. While Athanasius and Jerome had some sympathy toward the Jewish unwillingness to accept the Old Testament deuterocanonical books, both accepted the authority of the Church, and embraced her definitions of Scripture. There is a specific prophecy that is very convincing from Wisdom 2:12-20. This prophecy, written centuries before Christ, provides a remarkable description of Jesus (the “righteous man”), His ministry (as perceived by His enemies), and His execution at the hands of His enemies. Those words of Wisdom’s prophecy are all but directly quoted by the criminals, chief priests, scribes, and elders as Jesus is dying on the cross (Matt. 27:38-43; cf. Mark 15:27-32). In short, not only does the Wisdom prophecy describe Jesus’ claims and His crucifixion in remarkable detail, but it quotes His enemies, and describes their folly in the same way as St. Paul does. When someone see’s how stunningly accurate it was, it became impossible to deny it was a genuine prophecy. The words of Deuteronomy (cf Dt 18:22) tell us how to distinguish false prophecy from true; well the Wisdom prophecy made very detailed claims about the future, and every single one of them took place in the life of Jesus Christ. Thus, it was a genuine prophecy, and therefore came from God. I encourage you to actually read for yourself Wisdom 2:12-20.

Pastor Ian, as you know the Church existed before the canon. And according to Matthew 18:17, the Church has final authority to settle disputes between Christians. Certainly the decision concerning what is truly God's word is within her authority. Would you agree with me on that? So it is 66 books (a symbolic number of imperfection) or 73 (a number of perfection) in the Bible? The Church has taught it is the number of perfection. Truly the New Testament writings were produced by the Church, yet the Church was subject to them. A parallel situation is the birth of Jesus, whereby the Blessed Virgin gave Him birth, yet she was subject to Him. Mary gave birth to Jesus, the Living Word, just as the Church gave birth to the written word, yet each is subject to her offspring. In Response #3, I will respond to your statement, “Catholicism teaches that the tradition of the church has equal authority as scripture. THIS IS A HUGE ERROR! Mark 7:9 (TPT). Then he added, “How skillful you’ve become in rejecting God’s law in order to maintain your man-made set of rules.” Pastor Ian, thank you. I seek only for us to be united in the Truth as friends. May God bless you,

At the time of the translation of the English Authorized Bible , later called the King James Bible, God was prrosring little England to be a super power called Great Britain. The Englidh at the timr came out of the Dark Ages. A timr when the Nicolatians ruled. God hated their deeds. The Nocolaitans ruled ober the people and have ade them subject and into bondage. Jesus said this was not to be so but that they should 'lead' by example. Gid set up a system of translation through King James [who was raised Christian after his mother, Mary of Scotts was deposed and exiled]. His system pf translating was impeccable. Be sure that God made sure they woukd gave all the books in the bible that He wanted there. He preserved His word! Psalm 12:6,7. Onviously it had nothing to do with being English but all to do with His plan. The Apocryphal books remained in the bible because a Bishop said it must. Hr ptomosed huge fines to thise who published without it. They were good history, but was not considered holy writ. Therefore they were dropped. Modern bibles challenge God and His word continually.

Did you know that Mary is named in the first chapter of Matthew along with three other women of faith in Jesus' generation? The other three are Thamar (Tamar), Rachab (Rahab) and Ruth. God values and looks to men of faith. Hebrews 11. In Galatians 4 she is shown to be highly favoured, she gave flesh to Jesus. "But when the fulness of time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law, To redeem them that were under the law, that they might receive the adoption of sons. Galatians 4:4-5. Mary shows, as do all others who are devoted to God, that He can do wonderous works in and through them. God used a woman who was like us. Her faith in God keeps our eyes on Him. We see the glory of what she was going to do, as did she. But she also had to know the cost. [Jesus said],"Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they unto him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God." John 8:41. That is how the world looked upon Mary. The world remembers When Joseph and Mary looked for Jesus and found him in the temple, Luke 2:46, Jesus' response to Mary was, "How is it that you sought me? wist ye not that I must be about my Father's business? They understood not what he spake unto them." Luke 2:49-50. Jesus was speaking spiritually. Several times Mary ponder things in her heart. She did not know the meaning. This woman of faith was used to bear and raise Jesus. And also giving flesh to Jesus. She was truly blessed! But looking from God to Mary, makes her an idol! Oh, how that would grieve her. Jesus is always to be our first love. Mary brought glory to God, not herself!!!
@judyswiderski26828 ай бұрын
Did your church teach you that Jesus was Mary's firstborn son? Did it teach you that Joseph did not 'know her' until after Jesus was born? Did they not tell you that the body of the husband belongs to the wife and the body of the wife belongs to the husband? And that it is opening the door of sin to forever except for a short time of fasting and praying? No they take your eyes off of God and put them on Mary!!!

@@mjjules6873 He is the ultimste Judge. He has written His thoughts and commands for us to follow. "Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and docttines of devils, [what could thry be?] Speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their conscience seared with a hot iron, Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats [foods] which God has created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth. 1 Timothy 4:1-3. What else does God say? Through your 'first Pope' Peter, "Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock." 1 Peter 5:2-3 "But Jesus called them unto him, and said, ye know that the princes ofvthe Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever shall be great among you, let him be your minister; And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant: Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many." Matthew 20:25-28. To show the seriousness: Jesus hates even the deeds of such. "But this thou hast that thou hatest the deeds of the Nicolatians which I hate also." Revelation 2:6 You are right. There are many pastors who are educated yet not born again. But will that help the case for the priests? No. Jesus ssid you must be born again!
@mjjules68738 ай бұрын
Judy, OK. Your views to be ‘Born again’ according to your beliefs are valid. Even priests, or whoever is ministering in the church. There are protestants who memorize the entire Bible and not ‘Born again’ but go out there on YT and comment and profess their own interpretation of the verses word per word. And I know tons of Catholics who do not read the Bible but follow and respect Catholic traditions and remain naive of other denominations’ practises, and at the same time genuinely care for other non- Christians. I get it. We DO not worship Mary. Other than Jesus, who in the Bible has the toughest task given by God? The one who is pure? If I apply my logic here you couldn’t care less. If you visited a friend’s house and ignore your friend’s mother, how would your friend feel? Go and find other comments on YT regarding Catholic practices and am sure it will keep you going, you will write the Bible verses from Genesis to Revelation. Keep fighting for your truth.
