We wouldn't know anything spiritual if it wasn't "revealed" to us by God. Things I read in the Bible I understand with mental intellect, like I understand a history book, or, mystery novel. But, to understand spiritual things, it has to be revealed to our spirit man. I may think I know something, but, there are things I know I know because it was revealed to me by God. I've always understood that to be the Rock. Revelation of Christ. He is the only begotten Son of our Living God, amen! Hallelujah!!!!

Couldn't be the guy he renamed ROCK. That would be too obvious. It's certainly what everyone there believed, and he was never one to correct misinterpretations of things he said. Seriously. This is not complicated. Peter was named leader of the apostles in this moment. Quibble if you want about later Church structure, the nature of that mantle's heritability, even if there's an additional deeper meaning. This was literally never up for debate until like 2-400 years ago with later waves of protestantism. Even Orthodoxy acknowledges this without dispute (Peter/the bishop of Rome was first among equals). Knock it off. It's dangerous.

First and foremost, the Chosen is full of unbiblical dialogue and scenes. There is nothing this entertainment series can teach me about my God that I have not learned from Scripture. And in that Scripture Jesus refers to Peter as the Rock. There should be no confusion here - JESUS LITTERALLY SAID IT. To say otherwise is changing what Jesus spoke and commanded. Jesus built His Church upon the Rock Kephas. That is literal Truth.

@@Bobby-xr4boAmen brother. God bless the Catholic Church. The traditions that the apostle with the holy Spirit established have been passed down for generations and hold equal weight to Scripture. Luther and all the churches that separated went off and did their own thing. But the authority belongs to the Catholic Church who cannonized the Bible and told the world which writings were Holy. Also the amount of supernatural miracles that the Catholic Church have speak volumes of how special the Catholic Church is to God. All protestant churches and Orthodox churches combined can't even produce one single supernatural miracle to back up their claims of authority and true understanding of Scripture. Why is that? Why is the Catholic Church the only one with such magical miracles? I think you all truly know the answer. No hate or judgement on my fellow protestant and Orthodox brothers. I got nothing but love for you but to be anti Catholic while claiming to follow Christ is laughable and funny. If you don't have respect or reverence for the church God founded what does that say about your wall with God. If God called you to be a protestant or Orthodox Amen. But don't forget how important the Catholic church, mother Mary and all the saints are in our walk with Jesus Christ the Lord.

We are ancient beings, our souls have existed before time itself. Esoteric truth isn't/wasn't acceptable 2,000 years ago and still today many don't want to accept truth, because their fragile ego's can't handle the fact they've walked this planet for hundreds if not thousands of lifetimes and still they are stuck on the same ride. Each soul matures when its ready to make the real journey back to God and I assure you it takes more than belief to accomplish, it takes individualized effort, hours per day for decades with the support of saintly beings and ultimately Gods Grace to burn all the debt we have racked up. Jesus himself asked the disciples, who do they say I am? They replied, Elijah, John the Baptist, Peter responded you are the Christ, son of God. Here's a truth nugget for you, Elijah and John the Baptist are the same being (same soul). Elijah had his own disciple, Elisha, so who is Jesus, he is the spirit of Elisha (with a double portion of Elijah's soul). Jesus, himself tells the disciples, Elijah has already come again, but they did not recognize him. Hmm, reincarnation...guess who? John the Baptist. Its gets better, Moses was Elijah and was John the Baptist and was others. I will tell you, the soul of Moses is on Earth right now, incorporated in a man living in India. He is a powerful living saint, Yogiraj Gurunath Siddhanath, he is the same saint, known in his previous life as Swami Sri Yukteswar, the guru of Paramahansa Yogananda. Yogananda created Self Realization Fellowship, a lineage of Avatars and Saints, which includes directly Lord Jesus Christ. So, if you want to learn esoteric truth and be healed and fast forward you spiritual evolution, look to the saints to really tell you what the bible says and means. Since, Western scholars are missing the mark. Today, this minute you can join their meditations online and my guarantee to anyone is this, one meditation with them is easily equal to 300+ times going to church for a hr. Do the math, within a year, you will have lept forward years in development versus one year of nothing. The truth is we rack up spiritual debt faster than we can burn it off, kind of like the national debt, so if you owe more at the end of a year it means you didn't move forward at all. But if you are blessed/initiated and you do your part, you can literally burn a year of debt in a minute and within 20 years, you could be a living saint and you can take that to the bank, because its true. I ask God himself and Lord Christ to speak this truth to your heart. BTW, many of the Apostles are on Earth reincarnated, I know that as truth, not speculation and I posed the question to see who was paying attention.

There are two groups I want to address with this comment. I trust that God will lead those with eyes to see and ears to hear, those who are ready to receive this, will read it and bear good fruits. The two groups are Protestants and Catholics; I'm effectively addressing the whole body. In 1 Corinththians 1:10-12, it says "I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there are no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought. My brothers and sisters, some from Chloe's household have informed me that there are quarrels among you. What I mean is this: One of you says 'I follow Paul'; another says 'I follow Apollos'; another, 'I follow Cephas (PETER); still another, 'I FOLLOW CHRIST.' " In this excerpt, Paul encourages believers to be united, in mind and thought. For protestants, I'll stay this: There are several denominations fixated on their differences. To Catholics, I say this with the authority as Christ is OUR Father: the condemnation of Protestants is sinful. Period. What the enemy reveals to unbelievers is that we are a divided body. Jesus himself said "...Every kingdom divided against itself will be ruined, and every city or household divided against itself will not stand." He was replying to the Pharisees who were accusing him of delivering people from demons in the name of Beezlebub, but don't you think that the same applies for the Kingdom of God? Of course, it does. Next, Paul critiques allegiance to a particular apostle or leader of the church. It's a critique of the fixation on who is the true leadership. "I follow Paul... I follow Peter." It's pointless bickering. To my Protestants, again, the denominations need to be unified. To Catholics, the fixation on Peter being the rock of the church and fixating on the papacy is wrong. Now, the papacy can be good for holding certain standards over the church as a body. But, I encourage every individual reading this to ask themselves if they are idolizing the papacy. I encourage protestants to ask themselves if they are idolizing their church. Jesus Christ, is our one Father, and we are all adopted in one kingdom through belief. In the rest of the chapter in 1 Corinthians 1, we find that this fixation on division will diminish the power of the Kingdom. Wisdom does not come from man, or a particular church. It comes from God. If pray that those who read this are challenged in their perspective. I certainly was. It's a whole separate story, but at one point in my life, the division drove me away from Christ, as it currently does to many others. Stop being so worldly. The heresies that plague all areas of the modern body of Christ stems from this, and not being in the word of God.

1. Remember that ARAMAIC was the language spoken in the time of Jesus, in which “Peter” would have been “KEPHAS”, which does not mean “a small rock”, but simply a “ROCK”. Thus, the context tells us that the particular “rock” that Jesus was referring to upon which His church will be built is PETER HIMSELF. This isn’t to say that the rock doesn’t also refer to Peter’s testimony. Rather, the rock refers to the person of Peter, and possibly also to his testimony at the same time. 2. During the times of the Old Testament, the davidic king has a right-hand man. This right-hand man wore literal KEYS over his shoulder, and functions as a prime minister. These keys are able to open the royal treasury, and the gates of the kingdom. In the absence of the king, his right hand man would exercise the king’s authority until he returned. @@JoePips07 While it is very true that Jesus would have spoken in Aramaic and so the phrase would have been "you are Kephas and upon this kephas I shall build my church". But it is important to remember that Matthew was divinely inspired while writing his gospel and so the use of petros and petra can not be disregarded. We must ask why Matthew recorded Jesus's words in this way. While it could have been an arbitrary literary choice or an attempt to avoid reptation but this does not seem to be the case. So was Matthew distinguishing Peter as a rock from the rock Christ is referring to? That does not see to be the case either I believe that Matthew is drawing a parallel to Nebuchadnezzar's vision in Daniel 2:31-36 and the small stone that struck the feet of the statue and became a large mountain. The Scriptures absolutely show the role that Christ gave to Peter. P.S. I did not know that the prime minister wore literal key or what they unlocked so thank you for that interesting detail.

@@benjaminhancock9014 In Greek, you have masculine, feminine, and neuter nouns. The general understanding as to why Kephas was translated into “Petros” instead of “Petra” is because it needed to be in a masculine form in order to be a fitting name for a man. The Greek word “petra” is a feminine noun and is most likely the more familiar term for “rock” to Matthew’s audience so it’s the one he uses in the second half of the sentence. Furthermore, “petra” is being used as a metaphor, and not as a masculine name, so it is natural to use it on the second half. But to use “petra” as a name for a man would be unfitting, hence he uses “Petros” as a masculine name on the first half of the sentence.

@VCPPCMG2023 Ding ding ding ding…. You are right. In Matthew 16:16, Peter declares that Jesus is the Christ. In verse 17, Jesus recognizes that Peter isn’t just regurgitating something that he has heard with his fleshly ears, but it is a revelation he has heard from God. And in verse 18 Jesus states that it’s that revelation, the revelation that one hears from God identifying who Jesus is, is the Rock He will build His church on. In other words, the revelation that Jesus is the Christ, is the basis for the building of His church. Peter himself is not the rock.

Also Nathaniel declares that Jesus is the Christ the King of Israel when they fist met. Others declared what Peter said before yet Jesus did say those words to them. To Nathaniel he said verily verily I say unto thee thou shalt see the heaven opened and the angels of heaven decending and assending upon the son of man. But when Peter, who loved God the most out of all the disciples declares it Jesus tells the world that upon this Rock I will build my church and all the gates of Hades will not be able to overthrow. And on the very next verse he says. I will give you the keys of the the kingdom of Heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven. The Catholic Church is the truth brothers. Backed by Scripture, tradition and also by all the supernatural miracles that Only come out of the Catholic Church. Love all my protestant and Orthodox brothers and sisters just don't forget why God chose Peter and the Catholic Church to his light in the world. The church cannonized the Bible and is the one that has stayed true to the original teachings. One final thing to note. It's beautiful that you can go to any Catholic church in any part of the world and the sermons of the day and teaching are the same as if you were at your home church. The church is united as God intended. There is a reason why Jesus only sends supernatural miracles to the Catholic Church.

Because the Catholic Church was the first one that Jesus built. And yes the Catholic Church is the only Church to have supernatural miracles for Heaven as evidence of the church's authority and divinity here on earth. I get it if alot of Protestants don't want to acknowledge Mother Mary and her importance to our faith but what do you make of the Virgin de Guadalupe miracle in Mexico. That miracle alone has been around longer than the church you go to or any protestant church. Some of the Catholic miracles are older than the new age churches out there right now. Or what about the Virgin de las Lajas in Columbia. Just to name a few. Wherever two or more are gathered in God's name he is there and he will save his people. All I'm saying sisters and brothers again. Is to be anti Catholic is funny because it's the fullness of truth. Do your research before you go against the one Universal church God instituted. That is why I can go to any Catholic church in any part of the world and the sermon and teachings are the same of the day that I would hear if I was in my own home town. The church is united as It was intended. The weekly mass readings are handed out to all of the churches and on mass every single Catholic church around the world reads the same verses that were already set forth. No other church does this all the rest are divided while the Catholic Church is united. But if you love Jesus Christ the Lord with all your heart. Consider this. Matt16:17 Jesus tells Simon Bar-jona that it was God the Father that revealed this to him. Simon had never met the Father so how did the Father reveal this to him? Christ was teaching Simon, that the church would be built on the Godhead. 'Peter' is a translation meaning Rock, would be the obvious leader since he was the first of the apostles to recognize and trust the voice of God and declare it. The church is built on revelation. Think about John the Beloved , he lived longer than Peter but continued to receive revelation from the Godhead for the world. Truth is still revealed the same way today to earnest seekers, by the Godhead , Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

What? Sorry, your explanation falls flat! "On this rock" refers to Peter's statement of who Jesus is. Matthew 16:16 NKJV [16] Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” It is on that rock, that statement, that belief in who Jesus is that people are added to the Church building it. The Church is the body of believers, not a place, not a building. The only way then to build the Church is by adding believers.

You are 100% correct! The topic of the conversation was, "who do you say I am"? Answer: The Christ, Son of the Living God. Upon that Rock (Jesus being the Christ) is the foundation of the church. See also Matt 21:42. God causing Peter to declare that fact indicated him being chosen as the one receiving the keys of the kingdom. Peter used the 1st key to open the doors to the Jews Acts 2:14-42, 2nd key to the Samarians Acts 8:14-17 and the 3rd key to the Gentiles Acts 10:9-48.

I'm not so sure. After Peter's confession, Jesus says, "And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church" He doesn't refer to the confession as the rock in any sense. The only reference to rock he makes is Peter and Peter alone. Let's think of it logically. To read the phrase, "and on this rock I will build my church" in context, we can look at the phrases/sentences before and/or after. This is what we find... Before: "And I tell you that you are Peter (rock)" After: "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven." We can clearly see that Peter is the focus. He is the one who is given the keys to the kingdom of heaven. And he is the rock on which Christ founded his church.

@@tomcha75 Once again, what is the topic of this discussion? Matt 16:17 Jesus response to Peter, " his Father in heaven revealed it to him". What was revealed? Answer: Jesus was the Christ. Upon that rock (Jesus being the Christ).
@tomcha758 ай бұрын
@@alg190 "Answer: Jesus was the Christ" - True. This was what was revealed. However, saying this is the rock upon which Jesus is founding the church is a stretch by a long shot. - Just because something is true, it does not automatically and necessarily make it the element on which the next part of the phrase is based. If this logic was true, Jesus could also very well meant by rock: a) Simon Bar-Jona being blessed b) the fact that flesh and blood has not revealed this to him - And if Jesus meant Peter's confession as the rock, he most likely would have simply said, "For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, on this rock, I will build my Church". Here, the "rock" directly refers back to Peter's confession. - But instead we have, "For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock, I will build my Church". He takes the effort to mention Simon's name first, then change his name to Rock signifying a change in role and mission, then says on that rock he will build his Church. - Put down the anti-Catholic prejudice and read it for yourself clearly without bias. You will see that he is talking about Peter. Also take into account the next part where he gives Peter, and Peter alone, not all the Apostles, the keys to the kingdom of heaven. But ultimately, it doesn't matter what I say. It doesn't matter what you feel or want or prefer. What matters is the authority of the Church, and by extension, authority of Christ. If you read the Early Church Fathers, it is painfully obvious that they looked to Peter as the leader after Christ's Ascension. So we're left with these choices. 1) Christ wasn't aware that they would understand Peter to be given the leadership role as per their understanding of Isaiah, and would continue for 1500 years. 2) Christ was aware that they would do this, and knowing it to be erroneous, let them believe in falsehood and essentially lied to them. In #1, you have Christ who isn't God. In #2, you have Christ who is capable of deceit, and therefore, not God. I don't say this condescendingly or with any contempt, but if your interpretation differs from that of the Church who received the authority from Christ himself, you are in error.

"You are Πέτρος - Petros: ((a masculine noun) properly, a stone (pebble), such as a small rock found along a pathway.) and on this the πέτρᾳ - petra: ((a feminine noun) - "a mass of connected rock or a projecting rock, cliff") I will build my Church, and the gates of hades will not prevail against it." Petros is a name, which is translated into English as Peter. It has the above meaning, but the normal word that would be used to mean "stone" is λίθος - lithos, which is what Peter used in 1 Peter 2:5 to discuss that the spiritual house - i.e the church is made up of λίθοι ζῶντες - lithoi zontes = living stones, thereby stating that he was a lithon - stone among many other lithoi - stones which made up the whole spiritual house - i.e. Church. All that Matthew was doing here, as he quoted Jesus, was preserving a pun and making a huge point at the same time. The point that Jesus was trying to make was based on the fact that Jesus chose to have this interaction with his disciples, as was discussed in the above video, in the location of Caesarea Phillippi - modern day: Banias. Banias is a site in the Golan Heights near a natural spring, once associated with the Greek god Pan, where pagan idol worship would have taken place, and where a cave known as the "gate of hades" would have been visible within the whole rock. This comment that Jesus made in this locality would have been a good visual illustration to the disciples. The spiritual house that Jesus would build would not be hindered by the gates of hades from being built. The Church would be built as many individuals just like Peter would confess who Jesus is, having believed in the gospel message that would be preached by all of Jesus' disciples from that time onward. This situation was significant because Peter was the first to confess who Jesus was, and because Jesus declared that Peter would be the one who would initially be given the authority to open the gates to the kingdom of heaven when about 3000 men were given the privilege of being able to enter, having believed in what he said about Jesus in his first sermon on Pentecost Sunday.

Problems: 1. Jesus calls him Peter in other places in the Gospels, not just here. 2. Petros (Peter) is masculine; Petra is feminine. That is why the author would not refer to Peter as Petra. Greek experts will tell you there is no distinction here between the two. 3. In the original language (Aramaic) Jesus called him Kepha and said “Upon this Kepha I will build my church”, so there is no word difference at all in the original language. 4. Why didn’t Jesus call the other disciples “Rock” or some variation when they confessed who he was? 5. Jesus and the confession can be the rock while Peter is also the rock. Sort of like how a pastor can be the shepherd of a church while at the same time Jesus is the pastor of the church. 6. Jesus is clearly talking about Peter because he also gives him the keys to the kingdom (binding and loosing authority) which refers to the teaching and governing authority the Pharisees claimed in the first century. If Jesus is not calling Peter the rock then what he says about the keys makes little sense. 7. Jesus never changed Simon’s name to Satan. He did change his name to Peter. 8. He is called Peter or Cephas (rocky) all through the Bible by everyone. This was not just a one-time thing in Matthew 16.

1. Remember that ARAMAIC was the language spoken in the time of Jesus, in which “Peter” would have been “KEPHAS”, which does not mean “a small rock”, but simply a “rock”. Thus, the context tells us that the “rock” that Jesus was referring to upon which His church will be built is PETER HIMSELF. This isn’t to say that the rock doesn’t refer to Peter’s testimony. Clearly, this is a foreshadowing of Peter’s role as the right-hand man of Christ, and was given authority over the Church until Christ returns. 3. The Early Church understood that Peter was given a special authority by Jesus. And this itself has been the foundation of the Papacy.

Jesus sits at the right hand of the Father. Jesus is the only way to everlasting salvation. No one comes to the Father but through Jesus. There is no other way. False pope’s can’t save men. Peter isn’t the messiah. Stop using tradition of a false, wicked system to twist the clear scripture of God. Jesus is the only way. Nothing else. Jesus is indeed metaphorically the “cornerstone”, without which there would be no Church. But that is NOT the context here. In the context of Matthew 16, it is obvious that the “rock” that Jesus was talking about metaphorically refers to Peter/Kephas, a name which literally means ROCK. What do you think would be the obvious outcome when you believed you'd received God's grace? You think someone would leave the church and beat their spouse or rob a bank or kick a puppy in the face? I'm going to guess your answer is no. You'd go feed the hungry, cloth the naked etc.

The Rock will ALWAYS be Jesus..The Scripture is Clear. Why would anybody even QUESTION this fact? We are living in very "WEIRD" Times.
@KenKopelson8 ай бұрын
The Church has always believed that Peter is the ROCK. Jesus NEVER said he is the rock. Prophetically, he is the "stone that the builders rejected, which has now become the cornerstone", but never does he call himself the rock. Peter is the rock. And if you keep the teachings of Christ, you are like one who built his house on the ROCK. Building your house on the Rock equates to being a faithful member of the One True Church, which Jesus is building. Jesus is not the foundation of the Church, he is the BUILDER of the Church. Peter is the Rock, because he is faithful to keep all the teachings of Christ.

You couldn't have missed it more if you tried to. “And I (Jesus) say unto thee, That thou art petros, and upon this petra I will build my church …” The Scofield Study Bible explains it this way: “In Greek there is a play upon words in this statement: ‘Thou art Peter [petros, a stone], and on this rock [petra, a massive rock] I will build my church.’ It is upon Christ Himself that the Church is built.” (Scofield Study Bible, 1998 Edition, pg. 1206) Throughout the bible God Himself is called the Rock. Not sure why this video didn't state the obvious.

Brandon I love your explanation of Caesarea Philippi in this and other videos; it opened my eyes to just how evil a world full of pagan debauchery was, with child sacrifice and all the rest. The Gates of Hell as a defensive weapon with Christ's Church on the offense! Jesus chose Peter as the Rock, in Aramaic Cephas, because of his confession of faith. It reflects back to David's choice of Eliakim in Isaiah 22. Giving the keys is meant to be a continuing or hereditary office, so the Rock is definitely Peter, in all his weak humanity powered by God's grace. David was still the King. Christ is still the King. Peter is the Rock. Christ is the Rock. There is no real conflict.

Dr Heiser taught that the gates of hell would not be able to withstand the church. In other words, it's the other side of the coin. Except that the Church is not on the defensive, Hell is. The gates of Hell will not withstand the church.

Brothers and sisters, Check your concordance to look for the Rock as pertaining to Yashua, many times! Also noticed that that He was taking his attention, and said Upon This Rock, I will build My Assembly. He did not say, you, but this. That would be very odd way of saying, if He meant Peter. Remember, Peter denied Him 3 times, was faithless when he tried to walk on water. That is not a “rock” to me. Peter was human,like everybody else, but became a staunch deciple later on. Mary

When Jesus asked his disciples of what they thought he was, Peter answered by saying that "you are the Christ, the Son of the living God", with Jesus responding by telling Peter: "Happy you are, Simon son of Joʹnah, because flesh and blood did not reveal it to you, but my Father in the heavens did. Also, I say to you: You are Peter, and on this rock I will build my congregation, and the gates of the Grave will not overpower it."(Matt 16:16-18) Was Jesus telling Peter that he was the "rock" on which he would build his "congregation" ? When a sincere Bible reader does SERIOUS research into the Bible, completely setting aside any bias or personal views, they find out that Jesus was speaking of himself, for Jesus as the Christ was the subject under consideration, and not Peter. In speaking of "Peter" and the "rock", Jesus used two different Greek words, in which the name "Peter" is petros in Greek, and means "a piece of rock", while the word "rock" Jesus used is petra in Greek and means "a mass of rock".(see Matt 7:24, 25) At 1 Corinthians 10:1-4, the apostle Paul confirms Jesus Christ as a "rock", saying: "Now I want you to know, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud (Ex 14:19) and all passed through the (Red) sea and all got baptized (or completely immersed) into Moses by means of the cloud and of the sea, and all ate the same spiritual food and all drank the same spiritual drink.(Deut 8:3; John 4:10) For they used to drink from the spiritual rock ("rock", Greek petra) that followed them, and that rock (Greek petra) meant the Christ." And at Ephesian 2:19-22, Paul writes: "So you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens of the holy ones and are members of the household of God, and you have been built up on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, while Christ Jesus himself is the foundation cornerstone (or "rock")." "In union with him the whole building, being harmoniously joined together, is growing into a holy temple for Jehovah (God's names, see Isa 12:2, KJV). In union with him you too are being built up together into a place for God to inhabit by (holy) spirit." At Romans 9:30-33, concerning fleshly Israel stumbling over Jesus, he wrote: "What are we to say, then ? That people of the nations (or Gentiles), although not pursuing righteousness, attained righteousness, the righteousness that results from faith; but (fleshly) Israel, although pursuing a law (or Mosaic Law) of righteousness, did not attain to that law." "For what reason ? Because they pursued it, not by faith, but as by works (of the Mosaic Law). They stumbled over the “stone of stumbling”; as it is written (at Isa 8:14): “Look ! I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock (Greek petra) of offense (see 1 Pet 2:8, where Peter also quoted Isa 8:14, using the Greek word petra for Jesus as "a rock of offense"; the Hebrew word for "rock" at Isa 8:14 is tsuwr, meaning "cliff or sharp rock, a rock or boulder")," "but the one who rests his faith on it will not be disappointed."(see Rev 6:15, 16, in which the symbolic "mountains" are almost equal with or consist of "the rocks", Greek petra, as "a mass of rock" that they look to for protection from "the One (Jehovah God) seated on the throne and from the wrath of the Lamb (Jesus Christ)" at Armageddon, Rev 16:14, 16)
@timhaley34598 ай бұрын
@lukewilliams448 Peter (Greek petros, meaning "a piece of rock") was NEVER the "rock" (Greek petra, meaning " a mass of rock") on which Jesus built his congregation of anointed ones, for as was explained and obviously you rejected, that Jesus is the "rock" on which Jehovah's "special property, a kingdom of priests and a holy nation" would be constructed.(Ex 19:5, 6) At Romans 9:30-33, the apostle Paul, quoting from Isaiah 8:14 that applies to Jesus Christ, wrote: "What are we to say, then ? That people of the nations, although not pursuing righteousness, attained righteousness, the righteousness that results from faith; but (fleshly) Israel, although pursuing a law of righteousness, did not attain to that law. For what reason ?" "Because they pursued it, not by faith, but as by works (of the Mosaic Law). They stumbled over the “stone of stumbling” (Jesus Christ); as it is written (at Isa 8:14): “Look ! I am laying in Zion a stone of stumbling and a rock (Greek petra) of offense (Jesus Christ), but the one who rests his faith on it (or Jesus Christ as the "mass of rock") will not be disappointed." At 1 Corinthians 3:11, Paul wrote: "For no one can lay any other ("mass of rock") foundation (Greek themelious, meaning "laid down as a foundation, belonging to a foundation") than what is laid, which is Jesus Christ." At 1 Corinthians 10:4, Paul wrote: "For they (the nation of Israel upon their release from Egyptian slavery) used to drink from the spiritual rock that followed them, and that rock (Greek petra) meant the Christ." At Ephesian 2:19, 20, Paul wrote: "So you are no longer strangers and foreigners, but you are fellow citizens of the holy ones and are members of the household of God, and you have been built up on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, while Christ Jesus himself is the foundation cornerstone." At 1 Peter 2:4-8, Peter wrote: "As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but chosen, precious to God, you yourselves as living stones are being built up into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, in order to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ." "For it says in Scripture (at Isa 28:16): “Look ! I am laying in Zion a chosen stone, a precious foundation cornerstone, and no one exercising faith in it will ever be disappointed.” It is to you, therefore, that he is precious, because you are believers;" "but to those not believing (just as you are over Jesus being the "rock" on which the Christian congregation of anointed ones is built), “the stone (or "rock") that the builders rejected, this has become the chief cornerstone (of God's Kingdom, see Matt 21:43)” and “a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense.”(Isa 8:14) They (the nation of fleshly Israel) are stumbling because they are disobedient to the word. To this very end they were appointed." At 2 Corinthians 1, Paul wrote: "For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you through us, that is, through me and Sil·vaʹnus and Timothy, did not become “yes” and yet “no,” but “yes” has become “yes” in his case. For no matter how many the promises of God are, they have become “yes” by means of him. Therefore, also through him is the “Amen” said to God, which brings him glory through us."(2 Cor 1:19, 20) So, all of God's everlasting purposes hinges on Jesus as "the rock", being the "Amen" or "so be it" or "surely", while Peter is only "a piece of the rock", that showed serious flaws, as when he told Jesus that he would not suffer and be put to death on a stake (Matt 16:21-23), as when he denied Jesus three times (Matt 26:34, 74, 75), as showing fear of man at Galatians 2:11-14, so that Peter as the "foundation" for the congregation of anointed ones would fail, but NOT so with Jesus, who proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he would NEVER bend away, even the slightest, from Jehovah. Jesus is "rock-solid", while Peter "crumbled".

Not at all. Jesus said to Peter, YOU ARE! He did not say, "what you said is rock", no! He said, "YOU ARE ROCK". Peter himself is ROCK, solid, and immovable! Then, everywhere else, Jesus treats Peter as the leader. He gives Peter the "Keys to the Kingdom", which he does not give to anyone else. He also tells Peter, "Feed my lambs, tend my sheep, feed my sheep", and he also tells Peter, "once you return (from denying Christ), you must then come and strengthen all your brothers." Peter was indeed the rock, and Jesus laid upon his shoulders the responsibility to lead his Church. Just the very way that Jesus deals with Peter shows this clearly.

Jesus is making a play on words. When He says, "You are Peter," the word for Peter is Petros, meaning a stone or pebble. When He says, "and on this rock," the word being used for rock is Petra, meaning a rock, ledge, cliff, stony ground. Peter is a tiny pebble, but the truth that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, is the rock and foundation that the church is built on.

You will see that there are two different rocks in the Greek, and you will see that the rock Jesus intends to build his Church on IS NOT PETER, but rather it’s Peter’s testimony about who Jesus is: “Thou art the Christ, The Son Of The living God!” That fact right there, is the rock that Jesus is building his Church on.

It's even more than that. Since the year 14, Caesar had, amongst other labels, the title of "Pontifex Maximus" (Greatest Priest), which means all other religions in the empire were to be placed under the authority of Caesar as a divinity. This must be linked to the Temple episode in which Jesus whips the merchants: they were accepting roman coins to buy sacrifical animals instead of the specific currency of the Temple, which is pretty much saying that Yahweh is under the authority of Caesar.

Matthew 16:18. Revelation Is the Rock upon Which the Church Is Built As the Savior taught Peter about revelation, He used a wordplay on Peter’s name, declaring to Simon, “Thou art Peter [Petros], and upon this rock [petra] I will build my church” (Matthew 16:18). The Greek word petros means an isolated small rock or stone. The Greek word petra can also mean “a stone,” but in addition it can refer to stony soil, bedrock, or a large mass of rock. From these words we learn that it was not upon Peter as a man that the Church would be built, but upon the bedrock of revelation.

Yes, Jesus used Peter to start the Church: all the firsts, Peter did. God honoured Peter with that. Yet the ROCK the Church is built on is Jesus himself. Peter is a small rock, a petros. Conflation of two meanings in order to dispute the fact that Jesus made Peter, literally rock, the foundation of His church and the shepherd who would guide his church and ensure unity. All other interpretations lead to division and this is born out by the miriad of 'churches' that exist and are separated from the one true church Christ established.

The only flaw with your argument is the fact that Peter didn’t always guide the church, nor ensure unity. In fact, Peter had arguments, disputes, and was wrong on occasion. In Matthew, our Lord says, 'You are Petros', and on this Petra I will build my church'. This, I think, removes Peter (Petros, masculine) from being the 'Petra' (feminine) upon which Jesus will build his church.
@dailyDorc8 ай бұрын
It doesn't invalidate the interpretation that Peter is the rock. The Church is feminine (sometimes referred to as Holy Mother Church) and feminine analogies are often made to matters of the spirit. This is thematic throughout the Bible with many parables of the wedding but we see it in the New Jerusalem of Revelation - "come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb...". Psalm 45 - "Listen O daughter and incline thy ear". The psalmist speaks to the bride but the Bible also speaks to us in which we might understand o daughter to be our soul. There are lots of examples of that sort of language but those were top of mind for some reason. God bless!
