When you know the Scriptures and have some understanding of Jewish tradition, this show is truly invigorating. I love seeing people see Jesus and His teachings in the 1st-century context. It changes how we read the Scriptures. Many read the Bible as if it applies to their 21st-century context first. Before applying it to today, we must place and interpret it in the 1st-century context. I saw a huge change in my life when I applied this simple principle.

I agree with your insight. Also, as perspective: If a Jew had decided to change their life to live according to the Sermon on the Mount, to live at peace with Rome, they and/or their ancestors would be spared from death in 37 years. In 70AD Vespasian invaded Palestine, and under his orders, the troops were to spare anyone who surrendered. Majority of jews then had a hatred and hostility toward Rome, that if not moderated would NOT permit surrender! In fact, Titus, Vespasian's replacement did crucify one million five hundred thousand because they would not surrender.

@peter25681 Great example. I love the topic of 70 AD and Jesus’ predictions being fulfilled in Matthew 24/Luke 21/Mark 13 during this time. Even early fathers agree. Eusebius saw the Roman siege in 70 AD and the fall of the temple as direct fulfillments of Jesus' warnings in Matthew 24. Example: In The History of the Church (Book 3, Chapter 5), Eusebius writes: "All this occurred in this manner, in the second year of the reign of Vespasian, according to the predictions of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, who by divine power foresaw all these things as if already present at the time, who wept and lamented over this very city, and who, when His disciples were admiring the beautiful structure of the temple, said to them, ‘Verily I say unto you, there shall not be left here one stone upon another that shall not be thrown down.’"

Great video! There is one scene from season 4 that I haven't seen any of the commentators mention: Near the beginning of episode 2, Aticus pays Quintus a visit while Quintus is sitting for a bust. People sat for things like paintings or busts because they wanted to be immortalized in some fashion. Quintus obviously was expecting great things. In the very next episode, things really fall apart, and Quintus loses everything he's been working toward. I saw this sequence as a visual representation of, "Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall" from Proverbs 16:18. Am I the only one who noticed this connection, or is it so obvious that no one thought to mention it?

I watched The Chosen in theaters and again on KZbin. Thank you, Brandon, for your clear and detailed explanations!! What struck me, while watching the scene of Jesus watching the olive press, was the three heavy stones. Brandon, you said it represented (or foreshadowed?) the three times Jesus prayed, as he was feeling the pressure on the eve of Good Friday. To me, the three stones represented the three nails that they drove into Jesus's hands and feet. He seemed to cringe each time Zebedee put another heavy stone onto the press. It jumped out at me - The three nails. Maybe I'm way off?

In Hebrew "Get" means press and "shemen" means oil, especially olive oil. (In modern Hebrew "shemen" can also refer to milk fat.) So it means press of oil or we would say (olive) oil press in English.

Ramah and John the Baptist
@peter256815 ай бұрын
Also, when the prophet Elisha started his ministry, Elisha's life and ministry ended on earth. As a foreshadowing of John and Jesus, John should have ended his official ministry. But john still had disciples and a implied charge from God.. In fact, John, the disciple of Jesus wrote a quote from The Baptist, "must decrease so that He can increase" (Jn 3"30). A powerful statement about crucifying anything of us not born of The Spirit. By the way, Jesus did tell us that The Baptist was born of a woman.

@wilytechhubgh5 ай бұрын
Peter's problem all has to do with the fact that Matthew was a tax collector. He sees that as a betrayal to all of Israel hence he doesn't care if he was the cause or not, he was ever ready to blame Matthew.

God saved the Hebrews from the slaughter of an Egyptian king. Why didn’t he save John the Baptist from decapitation ordered by King Herod? Why didn’t he save His 9 disciples that suffered a similar fate as Jesus? Why are Christians persecuted throughout time? Why doesn’t the Shepherd protect His sheep?
@jrosanno34602 ай бұрын
I am not a theologian, but I believe that God does not promise us a life without suffering in this fallen world where Satan is still allowed to wreck havoc (for now); but those who suffer for the name of Jesus will be richly rewarded for their faith eternally in Heaven.

If you watch any of the discussions (on the app) you would know that they tell you that some people places times and “story” are fiction. There are Bible studies. There are discussions after each and every episode with a scholar, a rabbi and a priest to discuss what IS accurate. So, yeah I’m sure many are aware. 😉

Peter didn't have a tax debt according to the Bible. No mention of it. Nor fishing on the Sabbath (very highly unlikely in the Jewish society which strictly forbade work on the Sabbath). But yes, the Romans taxed heavily. And being in debt massively is something that everyone can understand, and Jesus does use that as an example of the great debt we owe God for our sins. If we can't forgive others their sins, we have forgotten how much we have been forgiven. Read Luke 7:47. "I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven-- for she loved much. But he who has been forgiven little loves little." Jesus' meaning is that she loved much because she realized how much she has been forgiven. But the one who doesn't realize how much he has been forgiven loves others little.
