It's here! Episode 2 in my journey to becoming a full-time KZbinr. And today... well we're talking all about my credit card debt story. This isn't something that I'm proud of. Honestly, if I could do it all again, I would have stayed in my full-time position longer to avoid building up credit card debt. But I wanted to share my story and my experience to help you guys not make the same mistakes I made 💕

"You need to spend money to make money" is such a dangerous mindset. I'm glad you figured out the fallacy in that line of thought. And... although it isn't a great place to be - hitting rock bottom with money is a place that people NEED sometimes to get a good kick in the butt to fix their stuff. I'm not glad that you had to go through it, but I'm glad it triggered the right changes in your life.

Both my parents and my best friend have reinforced the mentality: treat your credit card like a debit card. Don’t spend money that you don’t have readily available. And always ALWAYS have a solid minimum in your checking account. Never EVER pay the “minimum amount due” on a credit card bill. To keep your credit score high always pay in FULL and EARLY. I love your honesty and transparency in this video!

French here, the whole american credit card thing sounds insane to me like... I can't imagine having a card with money that isn't money I made on it and using it to build 'credit' or whatever it's called. @@ArtbyAtlas well, i'm not an expert by any mean but we have cards which only give us access to our own money and if we need more for big things like buying a house, we negociate a loan with our bank? Most of us have one card and one bank account, we don't have to take credits or loans or whatever in our entire life if we don't want/need to. Idk i feel like in America, you are encourage to spend money you don't have (and pay for it with your own money) and it irks me to even just think about it.

I'm a 100% super interested into credit card. French too, but living in the US, and if you treat them like debit cards, you actually collect points to travel with (or cash back depending on what you prefer), and you can only spend what you have to spend anyway, like health insurance, groceries, bills. So it can be very rewarding without costing a cent to you, if you treat them like debit and pay it in full before the due date. I love credit cards for that reason, I travel for free since I'm living in the US, and I will not like to go back to regular french debit cards which usually come with a small monthly fee. In the US, you only have fees if you don't pay your balance in full, otherwise, it's win win.

The way she describes the phrase, and how she thought of it, is not the way the phrase "you gotta spend money to make money" is meant to be taken. Basically, it's meant for investing in your business. Depending on the business, there are things you're going to have to pay for. Like, if you need physical space, you're going to have to rent a space. Online businesses make it easier because you can often run them out of your home, but you need to have internet in order to run an online business - so that's something that you always have to pay for. It's not at all about living the life you want before you can afford it. It's not necessarily about manifesting or anything. It's simply - you're going to have expenses in running a business that you can't get away from. And the bigger you build your business, the more expenses you will have. But the idea is to never have expenses that exceed your profits - then you're just in the red and one really bad month or two from just shutting down.

Wow, this must have been hard to make and share. I talk very openly about money on my channel, but I would have been super nervous to show this level of vulnerability. Fortunately, I've never gotten into any situation like this - I don't think my business bank account even has an overdraft or credit option! - but I could totally relate to the impatience of knowing what you want/don't want and wanting to act on impulse. I think it's something many creators and entrepreneurs have in common! I've been watching your videos since you had ~200 subs because you were the only creator I could found who also talked about blogging, and I've always had a feeling there was something driving that fire in you. The timings in this story make so much sense and correlate so perfectly to your visibly increasing drive and determination. I'm really glad it all worked out for you and you were able to use the situation to drive you to such success!

This video was truly amazing and was something I really needed right now. Thank you for always being honest, open and vulnerable with your viewers. Finances are a topic that so many influencers and youtubers shy away from, but it is a subject matter that all of us deal with and have struggled with at some point in our life. I have always found your videos so inspiring. So to know that behind the scenes that you were dealing with struggles that were similar to mine shows that there isn't really a huge divide, that I am not alone, and that people I look up to could also be struggling. I just started hustling on my channel because of you honestly. You were an inspiration for the reboot. I just recently was monetized three days ago & I’m made a total of $13 dollars. I know this money should go towards debt & fixing the damage done. But instead I’m going to use some of that money to get myself something. I have a gardening channel so even getting something for myself for the gardening channel would we a great middle road. I’ve realized you can’t keep slamming yourself down because it’s not helpful to you, your business or your debt oddly enough. There is one thing my parents taught me well: never get into debt. And definitely do not take bank loans - it was a TABOO in our family (and many other Soviet families, too - we were used to NOT trusting any governmental and private organizations). Also - never borrow anything from anyone. And I'm living up to this rule to date, hopefully I'll never have to break it. It's a bad practice. Learn to count on yourself only, it will make your life so much easier and make you a tougher person, too. Best of luck!

@@CathrinManning thank you for that emotional story about your sister. This is exactly my motivation of keeping doing what I do, exhausting myself and pushing myself to do the impossible. I'm from a poor family; I'm now considered to be "the richest" member in our united families (both in my and my husband's). My in-laws borrow money from me all the time, and I never say no. My parents need help, and my syster, and my nieces and nephews... and noone more than my own kids. My boys have everything that they need, but I can't relax and breathe out. Because honestly - I don't know what will happen to them once I die. They are autistic. And parents of kids with special needs with understand me - it's a constant fear WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO MY KIDS WHEN I DIE. They might never grow up to be independent, and I have to make sure I'll make the paths as smooth as I can for them, leaving the rest for God. But it IS a motivation. I NEED to earn more. Now; here is a sincere story for a sincere story... Thank you, Cathrin.

Thank you for sharing this less glamorous side of your journey as an entrepreneur. I have been subscribed since you were around 30,000 and seeing your monthly income reports since then, I definitely wouldn't have thought that debt was any kind of issue for you. The road to financial freedom on your own terms is definitely bumpy but I am glad you made it to this point ❤

Wow. Kudos to you for putting this out there! Real, honest and could help so many people! I just freakin' love you, Cathrin! Thanks for opening up about this. No one here is judging you - I think the fact that you were able to pay off your debt and go through that means that you can help other people prevent that and what a cool gift. Everything in life happens for us.. even when we make mistakes. & I still struggle battling that mindset of "spending money to make money" because I always want to do what is smart. However, when I purchased a new MacBook back in.. may I think? I spent ALL my money I had in my bank account to buy it and now I'm able to make more money each month editing for clients & growing my tiny KZbin channel. haha Anyway thanks for sharing! We are all such big fans of your ability to open up and be genuine! 💕 looking forward to the next one!

A few years ago I also racked up quite a lot of credit card debt so I totally understand your experience of juggling between credit cards with 0% interest. It can totally work IF... you stop any further spending on all your credit cards. Which I know it's not easy to do when you don't have enough income coming in to support yourself. I am so glad you got yourself out of credit card debt and stable financially - you must feel so relieved! ❤️ I remember it felt so good when I paid off my last credit card debt. Now, if I ever spend on my credit card, it's strategic spending for say a course or our property investment, but I make sure I set up a definite plan to pay it back within the 0% time frame and I set up a direct debit with the bank for the required amount every month. Your advice not to jump into your passion project too soon and your experience regarding this is so valuable - it makes sense to give yourself some breathing space and not to put too much pressure on your passion project to make enough money for you early on. Thanks for sharing your story with us Cathrin! 🙏❤️

Such a great video. Thank you. I have had a very similar experience. My business start up cost me so much money. Accountancy fees, website fees, business insurance fees....it all adds up and when you're just starting out - you find that your 'fees' cost more than what you make in business in the early days. Long term, those fees will become more insignificant - but at the start, it's a LOT of money. I've heard the 'speculate to accumulate' motto too...which can be true but I think there comes a time when you just have to realise you have to STOP buying so much stuff and work with what you have already got x
