I am a retired Truck Driver. Back in the late 1900's I used to drive my big rig with double trailers over Devil's Slide after delivering apples to Martinelli's Apple Juice Plant in Watsonville, it was such a beautiful drive heading North on Coastal Hwy.1 and 101 back to Sonoma County.

Age gives a lot of perspective. My stepdad was born in 1920. I thought he was soooo old. I lived in Pacifica 1963-1967. We took a lot of rides on Hwy 1 and in my mind, as an 8-10 yo, he was blathering on. But there was a part of my mind that paid attention to him. So glad I did. My memories are beautiful.

My neck of the woods! We drove along the original Devil's Slide on the very last day you were allowed to do so, good memories for sure. All the times I had driven it before I didn't realize how many bad accidents there apparently were throughout the years. It's great they saved it for pedestrians to enjoy those amazing views!

The old railroad tracks are still below the cliff. There is also a cave at the bottom / beach that looks like a great spot for pirates' treasures.

There is a couple mile section of US-2 on the north side of Lake Michigan that was rebuilt further inland probably due to worries about beach erosion and the highway road falling down the hill in the U.P.

I definitely had not paid attention to the bypass tunnels being created. Yay for the road being kept and turned into a walking path. Will have to venture out there

Josh, thanks for posting the video. I just hiked the Devils Slide Trail myself 2 weeks ago. Even though it is short, it is worth walking it, as the views are outstanding. I concur with parking on the south parking lot, as the walk is more scenic, as from the north parking lot the view of the ocean is blocked by a ridge. Note that the walk from the north side is much shorter and must be at a higher elevation, because there doesn't seem to be as much elevation change. The walk coming from the south parking lot is longer and has a 9% grade at the part approaching the high point on the trail.

I was doing my first full PCH road trip, from LA to Victoria BC in 2006, when I came upon the closed section at the Devil's Slide! So I never got to do that stretch. But it was the trip of a lifetime. Thank you for sharing this awesome view with us.

I'll have to check this out on my next trip through the area! Course I've already been on it...driving it from before they turned it into a hiking/biking area. Pretty cool idea for a section of the road that just continuously costs $$$$$$$ to repair for car/truck use.

That's a really cool trail to walk because of the stunning views, I remember driving on it and it definitely was a little crazy to drive it. Devils Slide always reminded me of driving down in Big Sur because of the steep cliffs and jagged coastline but with a lot more traffic.

That’s kind of like what they did to historic hiway 30 in Oregon, the first road in the US designed to be a scenic drive. It was built in the very early 1900s after scenic drives in Europe. It was eventually bypassed and replaced by I-84. Only a portion remains that is drivable and has stunning views. But a chunk was too unstable and narrow for cars so has become a pretty long hiking trail. I will have to check this trail out next time I’m up there

You can also extend this hike by going out to the Pedro Point Headlands. The access to the headlands is north of the tunnel and just a short walk from the Devils Slide north parking lot next to the PCH.

What a beautiful relaxing trail! I swear, it feels like the folks who officially name hiking trails enjoy giving them the most deterring names. 😂 We were out exploring Joshua tree last week and had a ton of fun exploring the “hall of horrors” trail. Can’t wait to share that name with other parents in our things to do with kids video next week 😅
@fixpacifica2 жыл бұрын
That area was called Devil's Slide long before there was a trail there. One thing that you don't see unless you're looking for it was an old train tunnel at the bottom of one of the cliffs. The train stopped running about 100 years ago and the tunnel was abandoned, only to be used during the '30s as a place for bootleggers to hide alcohol.

A geology teacher once told me to discern the origination of the coastal range, imagine a long time ago someone took a new stick of gum. The new gum represents the original island arc. Ok now imagine it has been chewed and tossed on the ground, and after lots of traffic over it, you come across it today and wonder what it must have been before.

I left California in 2006, I remember when the construction barely started. Back then I used to drive over devils slide regularly. I even rode a bike over it twice when I was 20. I left California before it was rebuilt but I am glad I did now because of how California's 'woke' politicians have absolutely destroyed the place I used to love.
