@debisavannah2 the strings are coloured... all the Cs are in red, the Fs are in black/dark blue so we don't have to count from scratch every time. and yes there is plenty of music written for it. most famous from the baroque period is Handel's Harp Concerto. in the last 200 years or so though, there has been an explosion in the harp repertoire as harp players start to compose harp music for the instrument they know best.

I've known this piece for years and never heard it with a harp, beautiful. I don't know if it's a triumph for the harp or for Bach's wonderful music...I guess both. ...she plays so effortlessly, you know that when you a musician play an instrument with such ease they are extremely skilled...beautiful Catrin Finch.

Damn - I was hoping to hear more of the faster stuff (I've been playing bits of the Goldberg for the last couple of years on the harp - this first movement works very well even on the lever harp - and it does go really well on this instrument). Very nice playing and lovely video.

@fingerhorn4 hi there, yes, I'm aware of that, and I'm also aware that Bach had no concept of the modern harp tone... and didn't actually write anything for the harp, or even suggest harp for any of his works. There *is* a hook harp at the Bach House museum, but nothing to suggest it lived there at the time any of the Bachs were living there, or any of them played harp.

Beautiful performance! In Catrin's hands (literally!) the harp is a modern alternative to the harpsichord, or to the modern piano ( Glen Gould). A Master work by a Master performer!
@parkerharps12 жыл бұрын
@fingerhorn4 My point is that we have some wonderful material by other composers that is being ignored in favour of transcription (Ms Finch once informed me personally that "Nothing worth playing was written for the harp in the 18th C".... strangely I don't agree) I have 32 concerti, including one for two harps, that don't get performed because they aren't the Mozart (unfinished,not performed before 1888) Dittersdorf ( for harpsichord and transcribed) or Handel ( for triple harp, not pedal).
@fingerhorn412 жыл бұрын
@parkerharps Almost everything by Bach is transferable to another instrument, and you'll be aware that Bach himself often used similar or exactly similar themes on a variety of solo and other instruments. I think the harp is very well suited to the Goldberg variations, and there isn't that much around transcription wise. Add to that this superb, tasteful, rhythmically sound and sensitive performance and I can't really see how you could not appreciate it.

@parkerharps. Agreed there are a lot of ignored pieces, and yes, the bass parts in Goldberg can sound a little muddy on the modern harp. I'd still rather this recording existed than didn't. As for ornamentation, agreed, but I still like the overall musicality here, and Bach sounds satisfying on almost any instrument.

@fingerhorn4 I also don't like any of the Bachs in ET, and fond the thick tone of the modern concert harp clogs up the harmony... that is personal taste. I don't say you shouldn't like it, whilst you seem to think I should be obliged to like it. she also does things with the ornamentation that are not in the nature of what the composer intended by the symbols (see the notebook for W F Bach, which has a table of 26 forms of trill.

Wow, if you play it incredibly slow, you can do anything on the harp!

I would much rather see a musician of her capabilities and standing championing the instrument and its canon, not declaring that she had to transcribe a Mozart piano concerto to have something worth playing, or having to take a suite written for keyboard rather than explore the repretoire for her own instrument

But why? its keyboard music! Do we not have enugh truly wonderful music composed for the harp that is ignored by modern players in favour of playing transcription...I guess becaus the composer's names aren't big enough...
