The play absolutely has no plot - it's just cats introducing themselves through songs until one of them gets to go to cat heaven. That's it, that's the plot. And just to be clear, I absolutely love the musical! But it baffles me how anyone would think it would translate well into an actual movie.

Nah, he's completely wrong on that. The 1998 production of Cats was really well executed. Of course, they just stuck to the basic format: song and dance number seguing into another throughout. But that is what worked about Cats. It didn't need dialogue or the other trappings of a standard movie.

Counterpoint; Broadway plays should be filmed while they still have some cultural currency *even if* they're still successful enough as Broadway plays that a movie would cut them short on Broadway. Cats should've been done (in ink-and-cel animation) in the late '80s/early '90s, and the producers and directors behind this version should've done Dear Evan Hansen instead.

I do agree, but the costumes and make up are much harder to use. The musical used costumes and make up which suits musicals, but costumes they used in the play wouldn't have been as effective. And not all of the design was CG, they actually used alot of makeup and CG'ed over it.

@@Manganization in all honesty it probably should never have been made into a film. The musical is really just a collection of songs assigned to the poetry it's based on, really loosely constructed into a story. It's more like a concept album about cats than anything. In a show it's okay because the dancing and singing looks much more impressive on a small stage, so you just have fun with the songs and amazing dance routines. In film you expect more of a narrative experience, so it's not really the best platform for a show like 'Cats'. It's a great show, but it would have never worked as a movie.

Well, I think it is wrong to say that there isn't really a plot in the musical. The story may be very short and maybe basic, and I also do not think it is too important to follow the plot in a Musical where the focus is clearly somewhere else, but nonetheless the scenes do follow a thread and are connected. Okay, the plot, as I understand it is about a group of alley cats called "Jellicles". And on this "special" night, all the cats are competing through song and dance for a chance to "die and be reborn as a kitten" all shiny and new. Along the way, they come across a bad cat that thinks he should be chosen, a young cat that does fit in, and a couple of magical cats. Old Deuteronomy comes in and, based on the various cats performances, chooses which one is to die and be reborn. That cat is lifted away to start her new life. The end. Now, they should have stuck to one stage setting, left out the cat eating mice and roaches with human faces, used the same cast from the stage production as well as those costumes, used the same music and choreography and filmed it as a continuous shot. Basically just filmed an actual stage performance. Other stage shows can get the movie treatment and be fine. Agnes of God, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Lost in Yonkers, Chicago, led Miserables, Grease, the list goes on and on. But this one can't. It's lack of a plot , coupled with the fact that the stage show medium and being a heavy music and dance show simply couldn't translate to film.

Anything is possible. It just requires someone who loves and understands both sides. For the longest time, I heard that Lord of the Rings could never be translated well from book to movie. It took Peter Jackson, who truly understood the books and film to make it happen. For Cats, it is obvious that the movie creators were not invested in what would make people want to see a Cats movie.

I've watched a few reviews and the movie and I've seen the stage show. I also read the book of poetry it is based on. No story, and trying to create a story has messed it up. The old VHS and dvd recording of the stage show is superior.

Hi there! huge cats fan here. I've loved the musical since I was a child, and I even acted in a production of it for our local drama group. It seems like a vast majority of people who went into this movie had ZERO clue what they were getting themselves into, and you can't be blamed for that. Cats the musical might be one of the most successful musicals of all time, but the stage show is EXACTLY THE SAME AS THIS. minus the whole "plot" point of Macavity kidnapping the other cats (lol what), the show flows the exact same goddamn way the movie does. in fact, when i saw the trailer for the first time, i was PROFOUNDLY confused because Cats has no plot. it's NEVER had a plot. trying to find a plot for cats is about as easy as herding them. getting big name actors to do one thing then disappear forever is actually right in line with this musical, and i was actually concerned that the star power for these bit characters would overshadow the cats who are SUPPOSED to be......i can't really call them lead characters. logic doesn't live here. but we're SUPPOSED to follow the grey narrator cat, and the focus should be on the dancers. hell in the musical, only the cats who get songs have names you can figure out cuz the rest of them ARE NEVER NAMED. oh they have names of course, but it isn't said ONCE in the show. this isn't a movie that should've been made because there is literally nothing you can do to make it flow like a real story. that being said i loved the FUCK outta this movie precisely because it's so batshit bonkers.

Yeaaaaaa. I feel like the official synopsis should be "Some plays should not be adapted as movies". Cats as a play is pretty entertaining. As a film, it just cannot ever work. The "plot" of the play is that one cat will be selected to be reincarnated by the elder cat, and then every single cat proceeds to do a song and dance number about their life to prove they are the worthy cat. And then a cat is chosen and it ends. So yea...fun as a play... Should have never been made as a film.

Plus they already have a film version of Cats which is basically just a recording of the stage musical and that should’ve been sufficient. This is a stage play that was designed to be made on the cheap in one shot (set). The plot is really simple, but apparently they didn't even get it through in the movie? Talk about something that never should have been made. I asked my mom if I was going to take her to it because she has seen the stage play of cats 3 times. She said… "I have zero interest in that." Excellent point Jeremy not every novel/play can transition well into a movie. There are many reasons why a movie version wouldn't work. Here we need to keep in mind Cats was specifically created for the stage and the characters interacted with the audience. Thankfully the play was recorded to be enjoyed for generations to come in the way it was intended.

I wanted it but I wanted it to be animated with absolutely no live action elements to it. Of course with both Dreamworks and Disney having shut down their 2D department that wasn't gonna happen. Dreamworks could have made it like Puss In Boots. Or they could have given it to the guys who did Coraline. And hopefully they would flesh out the plot a bit more - take creative liberties. But since none of that would have happened, honestly yes I wish this movie wouldn't have been made
