Not to be pedantic, but they're actually hearing it, not feeling it. XD When earthquakes strike, there is a much faster pressure wave consisting of high-frequency waves that travels ahead of the main shockwave. This early wave is too high for us humans to hear, but cats, dogs and other animals can hear it. It's actually pretty damn loud which is why all the cats seem to "wake up" at the same time.

Brennan Kretzinger We just don’t have particularly good ears compared to some other animals. On the plus side we have pretty good color vision and it’s hard to beat having opposable thumbs, so we’ve got that going for us. Similar to the 1989 quake in Northern California, you usually hear it before you feel it. I remember being outside an apartment, then all of a sudden the sound of MULTIPLE large freight TRAINS sounded like it was coming up from the ground. About 4-5 seconds later, the 7.1 earthquake hit. This sound usually happens with larger on the Richter scale quakes. So most likely they heard it emerging below them before it physically hit.

It’s a weird phenomena because it’s been said that before some tornados, (in more remote areas with no sirens) the only warning sign to one coming is the sound of a train’s horn. I personally don’t live in an area with earthquakes, so I can’t really comment on the sound of one.

Yeah the scary waves that you feel during an earthquake are called "Rayleigh waves". They are destructive but have quite a low speed, less than the speed of sound according to the frequency. So you hear their propagation before they arrive at your location I guess !
