My cat used to do this a lot as a kitten, and one day I thought "what if he is trying to play with me exactly the way he would with other kittens?", so I started playing hide-and-seek-chase with him, and it turned out to be exactly what he wanted. It's pretty adorable how mad he gets when he can't find me.
@amywalker7515

My kitten has about a dozen ping pong balls he loves to chase around the house, but it is incredible how quickly they all get lost and he can't find them. So he and I go around with a yard stick looking under the sofa, chairs, behind bookshelves, etc. He looks under while I look under and fishes his paw under things just like I do. I must be acting like a cat looking for prey. Once a ball is found, it gets lobbed across the room, he plays like crazy for about the 15 seconds it takes for him to lose it again. Almost wish I had an empty room with nothing in it so he could continuously play till he's tired. I wish my cat would play fetch with me too.

@@amywalker7515 Sometimes cats push things under the sofa to then retrieve them, it's like a mental excercise. If you dedicated a whole room for him and a ball, he would get bored almost instantly, because retrieving the ball from under the sofa is also fun for cats.

@@amywalker7515 Put the ball on the end of a string and throw it around. Then you can just pull on it to retrieve it. Also, just as cat is about to get it, you can yank the string and the ball bounces out of reach. Cat loves that!
@kukui79
@kukui79 2 жыл бұрын
@@eerrm1 if you do put the ball on the end of a string, just make sure you're always around when the cat is playing with it and put it away when you're not able to supervise. Otherwise the cat could eventually chew or rip the string off, which can cause serious intestinal issues that sometimes result in surgery or worse.
@eerrm1
@eerrm1 2 жыл бұрын
@@kukui79 We had a cat that was inclined to chew off string from anything it encountered. That meant threads from frayed clothing, shoelaces, carpet edges etc. until it went to the vet. The cost was going to be very high with a certainty that the cat would not stop eating strings. The cat had to be put down. If a cat will eat string, you can’t stop it.

My young kitty shows us she wants to play by literally bringing a toy to us. She'll also hide behind a sheer curtain and "surprises" us by jumping at us through the curtain. We both know to make a sound indicating that she definitely surprised us and we had NO idea she was there (she's part Maine Coon, she's really big & doesn't hide well 😂) and she LOVES it.

I go to the end of the hall with a broom after tossing and chasing his little pompoms down there, then he runs excitedly to the other end and hides with his little head down and his eyes all huge ready to play what I call cat hockey when I start taking “shots” with the broom and he explodes from out of view to jump on and capture the Pom poms, blocking them from getting past. Then I’ll run out of little balls to fling down the hall so I’ll start walking towards the other end, snd he’ll excitedly run down to man the opposite end, and we will go until he lays down and shows a belly Also I take a throw pillow from the couch and get a long string ( I like to get a pretty rainbow paracord from the bracelet rope area of the craft store) then I toss my cord across the room, drop a pillow about halfway between myself and the cat/end of string, and start dragging it back towards myself from across the floor, and if the cat sees this string going under pillow- my cats will instantly become _quite_ concerned with what tomfoolery is afoot and that the pillow absolutely *cannot* allow it to continue. They love to dive into the pillow and pull out the string that was hiding under there. I’ll let them chew on it for a bit then I’ll reset and start the game again.

We had several successive cats I always played with. When they heard me arriving home from school they hid behind a door, or under the table and when I entered they jumped me, bite softly in my leg and ran away to hide. I would then look for them, and when I found them they would either jump me, or run away and hide again. It was great fun. I loved it and really connected with them, and I always looked forward to this playful ritual. And yes, I had always scratches on my legs and hands, but I never gave it a second thought, because I was playing with my most favorite little predators in the whole world.

We had a fluffy calico once who would have what we came to call “jump rope time” every day. We’d hear a warbled, muffled meow from somewhere in the house, accompanied by a dragging noises, and that was our cue: she wanted not to chase, but to follow a green, plastic jump rope as one of us dragged it behind us on the hardwood floors, round and round the house. She would signal that the game had to begin by finding the rope, picking it up in her mouth, and dragging it around the house as she meowed; basically showing us what we had to do. My family would hear the sound and we’d all call out to each other, “it’s jump rope time! Jump rope tiiiiime!”, and then guilt each other into being the one who had to walk around and round the house for a half hour until a cat got bored. ❤️

I noticed that making an 'auwtch' sound really helps. Kittens seem to know it means that you're hurt and they most likely will stop scratching/biting right away. You do need to be consistent, so every time they use their claws or teeth, you must say it. If you forget, they won't know when they are hurting you and when they aren't.

Exactly, there needs to be communication. When my late cat accidentally bit too hard, he'd immediately notice by the tone change from playful *ouch* to reprimanding *ouch* and immediately let go and put himself in "sorry mode", showing submissive behaviour! Even a sign, which for us has always been a raised index finger, is enough to show him (and the whole load of other cats we had/have) that they've gone too far. People don't understand this and expect cats to be dumb, and label them as assholes all the time, when they're the ones at fault.

A friend of mine keeps telling me that a stray cat she brought inside keeps *attacking* her and her partner. Cat was pregnant and pretty people shy. Kittens are mostly gone now and they are integrating her into the house with their two other cats. "We've tried everything! But she keeps attacking us!" I roll my eyes every time. Like c'mon she was an outdoor, shy cat for the first few years of her life and you only give her a few weeks to acclimate to a new environment, new people, new cats, new everything?! Not fair to the cat. I shared this video with them, hopefully it helps them manage the cat's overzealous play.

Sorry to double comment but this deserves a separate one... I don't normally like a lot of animal behaviour 'experts' , especially that nasty dog man, but this is top quality. You are using the techniques employed by some of the greatest psychologists - thorough observation coupled with a deep understanding and knowledge of typical and atypical behaviour and your conclusions are really spot on. I had to subscribe, which I just did.

I wish I could have dealt with my guy Nemo’s aggression better. He passed a few months ago at 15 1/2 and we understood each other deeply in his last 4 -5 years. Prior to that he would attack by biting hard enough to sink his teeth and claws fully in. I’m sure this was antisocial/anger issues because he was isolated for several years, mid life, due to marking issues This was due to other cats/territorial issues, despite being fixed. When I got divorced I took him to live with me. He had his own space and no competition for food but the biting continued. The only way I knew how to deal with it was to get loudly angry (never physically violent) followed up by calm talking. It was my way of apologizing and he would fake sleep while I did this. Eventually, he stopped the biting and learned to touch me gently with his paw for attention. It took a couple of years of blood, scars, and infections but we finally worked it out. We were friends in the end. I just wish I’d had a better way of changing his behavior. RIP buddy.

@@daniellahaha5713 Since your friend is still a kitten there is a lot of hope but, because of the nature of most cats, you will have to find some amount of patience. As your cat matures mentally and loses some of that kitten energy, you may find it’s actually a pretty mellow critter!

My very first kitten played like this. My apartment had the bedrooms on one side with the kitchen on the other and the living room in the middle. At night, when it was dark, I would walk across the living room to get an iced tea. As I crossed the living room, Pyewacket would come running out of the dark and wrap herself around my ankle and nibble a bit. The first time she did it, I let out a squeal. She kept doing it for weeks, and each time, I would let out a squeal❤ just for her. She took a long time to get tired of this. She was a cute kitten and a beautiful cat when grown.

She’d pounce on my poor bare feet/ankles/lower leg. I began redirecting her with treats. As soon as I would come out of my bathroom, I would shake the treat bag, and wait for her to jump up on my bed. It didn’t take her long to catch on, and stop pouncing. Now she will wait on top of my bed, wait until I get into bed, and then she gets her treats. She’ll usually take off right after that, and go through her zoomies for about 10 or 20 minutes, and then settle in. Thanks for the videos!! The kitten is WILDLY more active and attack-prone than the older cat was. It makes sense, ofc, but still, seeing it happen in real time has been a little wild. Our new kitten does the “attack the legs as you walk by” thing when we’re getting up. He’s definitely at his most playful first thing in the morning. Seeing this in other cats and knowing that it’s normal is VERY useful. Thank you. Sometimes just being in another area when they get that way helps a lot. I put on his automatic play toys and go downstairs. Our cat does this exact thing. When I see this face and body language, I know he's about to pounce. He actually LOVES when you chase him at this point. When Tucker was sort of turning around to go, that's where I would slap my knees and go "I'M GONNA GET YOU" and he will sprint full speed out of the room. But be careful, because he will then turn around and start chasing you. It's a fun game of back and forth in which he gets to use up some of the energy and he never actually feels the need to pounce.

I tried to wear her out through play time, toys after toys but she would get bored and lunge past the toy and grapple my arms. After quite a few methods and actually getting another cat friend the manic need to hunt momma subsided. Thank you so much…I adopted a gray Tabby only to find out he’s a Bengal.. he’s attacking my two older cats and us. I’m not giving up on him…I bought a big cat tree and a smart TV for him to see videos. Today I’m going to buy more interactive toys. We did…and he’s getting older…beautiful cat!!! He’s asleep on his Daddy’s pillow now and has stopped this behavior. I’m so proud of Grayling Daniel named after Dan Fogelberg!!!❤️😻😘

My cat used to do this, and after watching your show I realized what I needed to do as a cat mom but I'm glad I found this video to confirm my suspicions! You've always been so helpful and thanks to your channel I've found a new appreciation and love for cats 🐈💕

I loved this video Jackson. My cat is so loving but has been doing the playful aggression. It has been more apparent since I rescued a dog…(DUH! I know it’s because he’s jealous of the dog and I do my best to share the love equally). I always see it coming, but you summed it up perfectly when you showed Tucker and interpreted exactly what he was saying. “How dare you ignore me!” Sometimes I’m watching one of your videos when he does this!! LOL! So you’ve solved the problem -there are always toys within reach and I’m going to grab one and give him that the attention he’s demanding. He deserves it!! 🥰❤️
