Changing foods saved my cat's life. When my cat was 2 she was in stage III renal failure and given 6-24 months to live. She got put on a prescription cat food. @emilybh6255 Жыл бұрын
@@wetlandkeeper It is best to feed your cat what it would get in the wild. A sick cat can only benefit from a fast. In fact this applies to all mammals. Most people have heard the famous quote by Hippocrates -"Let food be thy medicine and medicine by thy food" But few people know what he said right after that which was "...to eat when sick is to feed the sickness". This is the opposite of what the orthodox allopathic vet will tell you BUT we can help our cats TREMENDOUSLY by not stressing out when they don't want to eat and if we can't handle letting them water fast themselves to wellness, we can give them a day or two at a time of giving them a liquid high calcium chicken broth fast discussed in Anitra Frazier's books about natural cat health, before offering them a high quality home made raw diet.

Carrageenan is an additive from a red algae that is used to make food look like flakes or to make it paté like. The problem with this additive is that there is evidence of it causing cancer to animals and humans too. I learned about it when my cat vet recommended a super premium wet food. And after reading what it does I insta stopped feeding that things. Still be careful. reading human food labels I have seen carageene in food like ham and cheese brand. I stopped buying those.

Ditto. When I went out to apply my new knowledge from this video in the real world, I was seeing "pyrophosphate" and "triphosphate," and was wondering if those were just as bad, or better, or worse...so confusing!
@laurat.9573 Жыл бұрын
This. Phosphates appear to typically be bound to calcium which is important for bones and teeth, so if we try to find a food with zero phosphates, that nutritional need has to be supplemented with something else - but what would that ingredient be, what are the downsides of THAT ingredient, etc etc? High phosphorous harms the kidneys, but it's not necessarily something to cut out *entirely* (Not an expert by any means but I'd argue that the lower down the list these "harmful" ingredients appear, the better. Most of us can't find the PERFECT food but we can find the lesser of all the evils)
@doomicus1986 Жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly 🙌
@haiphan9181 Жыл бұрын
The key is “multiple phosphates”. Phosphorus and calcium displace each other in mammals (including humans!). Too much phosphorus can pull calcium out of an animal’s bones and teeth. Like wise, too much calcium create deposits (ie, kidney stones, etc).

I would love a series on choosing cat food because this shit is so confusing. I would also love something on calculating how much food your cats need and how/when to change their food as they age. Also, how to feed picky eaters! We have to have multiple boxes of food open at once to switch up the flavors for our picky cat and then I usually have a box of higher end tuna food (only three ingredients 😱) to give them as an occasional treat. My cat Fae will do anything for fish and I found she will eat the higher end food when she sticks her nose up at her regular food
@hannajung7512 Жыл бұрын
how much your cat needs depends on the food you buy. Some are very high in protein and fat and thus a little goes a long way, others contain more water and maybe rice and thus have a lower calorie and protein count so you need to feed more of it. it should be written on the packages how much you need for a certain weight.

I totally agree! Would love a series on this, especially looking at multiple flavors from single brands. The brand itself might not be all bad, but certain flavors or kinds are sure to be better than others. Maybe go more in depth with a video a piece on the premium, mid-grade, and affordable wet foods. Also, agree that a video for how much wet food to feed would be helpful. I grew up with my parents only feeding dry food with a spoonful of wet food once a day, so I genuinely don’t know how much to feed. I’m actually fixing to switch to all wet with dry left out for snacking overnight if they get hungry, but I’m floundering on how much

They kind of eat a combination. The male likes more wet his favorite however I'm afraid is tuna fresh canned. And the female likes more dried foods however my mother in law was smart enough to provide them with freeze dried chicken as Christmas treat. And now it's Missy's favorite, the most pickiest eater. And it's weird neither of them will eat 100% protein like salmon or chicken anything made by me directly. Even my mother-in-law's tried to make them cookies that they won't touch. They are store-bought cat food eaters. He the male cat will try little bits of meat if you hold it for him but don't put it down. Which then causes other problems. So for the most part they've trained me I haven't trained them when it comes to food stuff.

One big reason why it's good he didn't name brands is that they each have different product lines. Like pate and shreds have many different ingredients. So even 2 cans from the same brand can have wildly different ingredient lists.
If you can read whats inside and don't buy it. You do the change. Recepies can change all the time so naming a brand won't help much. It is not hard to take a look ak your food and yout pets food to see what you buy or not. If no one buys it, it will disapear or change on its own. No company will produce stuff that does not sell. Great to see information shared on this. Sadly, there is simply a lower amount of research done large-scale for cat food over dog food. A big part of the reason that many mid to low cost pet foods have improved over the years is because most of them are owned by Purina, and even though they carry a huge range of qualities in food, they generally maintain very base level quality standards across the board. More often than not they're good with research or lifetime studies done on their foods, both by the brand itself and following that, third party companies. (Again lots of range though, I wouldn't go buying alpo anytime soon) Blue Buffalo is notoriously unhealthy for pets and they have done absolutely no internal research on their own, just paid some Hills guy to do a study. Higher price points are often that way to convince you that the ingredients and diet is of high quality and I'm really glad to see that point made in your video.

Not only are the protein levels low, and the only meats being by-products, but both the senior and indoor foods have carrageenan about midway through the ingredients list. If this was a cheaper brand, I wouldn't be so shocked, but since my vet has recommended this to me for so long... I'm concerned. No hate to the brand or my vet - the weird stuff that goes into all food in general is a messy business these days - but still, what an eye-opener! And that's just the wet food... I’d mix the junk food cheap stuff that he likes with the good-for-cats stuff he doesn’t eat. Half and half. Give a portion, fridge the rest until next time. Nuke it for twelve seconds before serving if they don’t like it cold. He eats all of it.

And try that times 3 (all 12 yrs old). Trying to find a food that all three will eat. Or a flavor all 3 will eat. My primarily outdoor cat (and only hunter) is the pickiest. Salmon, she doesn't like salmon. I do feed dry as a back-up, but no-grain version. I need to be able to be away overnight and leave food for them. Will look closer on contents of these. I rotate flavors, so they get variety. I also give each a dollop of plain Greek yogurt each morning. My picky eater is the only one who finishes all of hers right off. I have one that will gorge and then go right to throwing up, so I have to feed smaller meals. I have chickens, so I may start boiling and adding chopped egg to their meals.

When we got our 2 kittens last year, I practically drove myself insane trying to find the right food. I learned how to read labels and exhaustively compared a ton of brands. We ended up settling on Wellness as it was the best fit when considering both the ingredients panel and our budget. Our little boy has so many allergies, but they have options even he can eat. Both our babies have loved the kitten formulas. We're getting ready to transition them to the adult food as they both hit the year mark, and we're hoping they continue to enjoy it.

Try Fancy Feast Chicken, Beef, Salmon, Liver and Chicken, any of the fishes, but stick with the pate. Easier to eat after kitten food. My cat went to the vet last summer and he said he has the best blood work he's ever seen! He's also 13 years young and still going strong albeit a little slow. We supplement with Science Diet Senior Hairball Control to aid in the elimination of hairballs but he only consumes less than 1/2 cup a day of that. Cutting back on the dry treats! They're very addictive! Lots of daily fresh water but I add an ice cube or two. Florida water is too warm for him from the tap. Good luck.

Hi Jackson, Thank you so much for touching on this topic of nutrition. I was just discussing this yesterday with a friend. Nutrition is everything! My cat has been dealing with constipation. It is a horrible experience after getting him through having elevated liver enzymes, blood clots, diabetes (that has resolved) and now constipation where he needed 2 sedated enemas and now on laxatives to make sure he can poop. Really, this has been very traumatic for him, me and my dog who has been up every night for the last 6 months because none of us are sleeping as he yells every night trying to go. He has been through so much. Now, all enzymes and blood values are normal, we are just trying to get through the constipation and I am trying to get him on a wet food diet to help him out. Aside from crystals in the urine a few years ago, this is the only time he's been really sick in 14 years. We are doing everything we can to pull through. I have been supplementing gravy to give extra fluids but really trying to get him on strict wet foods. Thank you again for going through the ingredients because there are so many brands out there that are selling complete garbage and calling it food. Our cats deserve alot better. Please dive as deep as possible into feeding our cats the best on the menu! Thank you again for all you do. Love the videos every week. 🐈⬛🐈😺💗

Thank you for this new video on cat food Jackson and I hope you continue with more in-depth videos to help educate cat parents through your platforms! In the past, I read through all the FDA regulations on cat food and I was appalled by all the “loopholes” that allow dangerous practices! Food not safe for humans like bad plant crops and rancid oils is just ghastly. The biggest issue with ingredients labeling is the “minimum” & “maximum” percentages and the deception of an amount of Fat, if animal sourced, can be counted as the meat content instead of listed as Fat, sometimes resulting in an actual total Fat content of 65%, on an “As Fed Basis”! Most veterinarians are not educated in Nutrition and very few have the knowledge and taken the time to educate their clients, with rare exceptions having detailed information online. The public cannot demand better food if they don’t know how bad current food products are! There are so many new products that are being manufactured in Thailand or other countries that do not have the same quality of production standards as the U.S. and some veterinarians advise against them. There is also a concern that new boutique brands are being produced in the U.S. and there may be a lack of inspections for quality control and production safety standards. I agree that the biggest problem for cats though is dry food - it is the worst dietary choice for obligate carnivores and it is detrimental for their long term health. This subject is something that all pet parents need to be knowledgeable about and you may be able to reach the widest audience so we can make changes to how our pet’s food is made! 😻🐾❤️

Thank you SO very much for taking the time to research and getting advice from your coworker on this very important topic! I've had cats my whole life and me and my mom have been asking vets what kind of cat food was good vs. bad and none of them gave us a actual answer! Our last vet just told us that no there isn't really a better kind of cat food, and that cats in a natural habitat don't live past 8 years and when they are house cats they can live longer but aren't supposed to so they will all develop health issues. This could possibly be true in some sense but I know for a fact that some cat food really isn't good for cats! Thank you Jackson for making this video. It is really helpful for cat parents to know what they are feeding their cats. I used to feed my first cat raw food, but it was really complicated and I was scared of missing a nutrient or passing on Salmonella! My cats are eating wet food and I went through lots of research to find a good food for them. It feels like there is no best food out there and each brand has a problem. Just want to share my experience here. My cats were eating Tiki cat food. Awesome brand and actually there is no grain or strach in it, just pure shredded meat. But, both my cats couldn’t digest the high protein and high fat diet, so they got diarrhea. And this happened few times, so me and their vet are sure that problem was the food. So, if anybody has the same problem, change their food and get something with less protein in it. Cheers!

That beef or chicken can be crap meats not proper decent meat. Same with seafood products. There is so much that the companies can put on those labels to lie/trick people. And while we are checking out the cat nutrition, know that much of this wisdom applies to us as well. Healthy fats and proteins, low carbs.

@@illusivity3701 In my area, Lower Mainland of BC, Canada, I can get several different brands of raw, frozen food for cats. I feed my cat 50g of raw food twice a day plus a bit less than 1/8 cup of meat-based kibble that I throw for exercising my cat. The pouch contains 250g of raw, ground meat, organs, bone meal, fish oil. The price varies depending on the meat. Choices that I have include chicken, turkey, beef, venison, lamb, kangaroo, chicken & salmon, rabbit. The most expensive one are the venison, rabbit and kangaroo. My cat much prefers the venison, is 'meh' about the kangaroo, and disdains the rabbit. My cat loves the lamb, but it is an occasional treat as it is a rather fatty meat, a bit more so than beef. The turkey is leaner than the chicken. The cheapest is the beef. But basically, compared to feeding 1/2 can of the premium wet food, 50g of the raw food is quite comparable. I try to get a variety of meats so my cat does not develop a fixation on one particular protein. It also lessens the risk of developing food allergies or sensitivities. One does need freezer space as I tend to buy enough to last 30 days at a time. So that is 12 pouches varying from $6 to $8, at 2.5 days of food per pouch, supplemented by kibble. Otherwise, it should be 62.5g (250g/4) twice a day. Note that is also depends on your cat's weight. Mine is still 15lb after losing 2lb over the last 3 years. She still needs to lose another 2lb according to the vet, so I closely monitor her food intake.

Thank you for this Jackson. I know your stance on dry food, and I completely agree. However I am guilty of leaving a little dry food available to my cats. Their main meals are all complete wet food. I know free feeding isn’t for all but my cats are quite controlled and don’t overindulge. I just want them to have access to some food when I’m not around. The second they show signs of over eating I’ll stop. It’s more like a snack for them😹 But this video was very informational, especially about the phosphates and the carrageenan. Much love

I have three yowling baby boys and do two bowls of dry daily-spread throughout the house. They each get their 1 can wet daily and two of my boys don't over-indulge with the dry food, but one does. Have you had to deal with an over-eater before, and any suggestion on how to keep the dry out, but make sure they all get a little? Note: I put 1 cup of dry in each bowl AM and 1 cup at night. If it goes empty, so be it because they obviously get their canned. Thx.

I thought I was feeding my kitties extremely well. I did not feed the major lines but small manufacturers - often times compromising on food for mom. BUT, with my last baby still alive I now make his own and include the right balance of nutrients with a supplements. This allows me to feed him only pasteurized chicken and organ meats, no antibiotics humanely raised. In 2 weeks of this no more vomiting and I'm actually saving money. Thanks JG.

This was great! How about a video with advice on how to convince fussy kitties to accept the good brand that they don't want.
@emilybh6255 Жыл бұрын
Just mix it into the old food adding just a little of the new food increasing the amount each day so after a week or two he or she is eating 100% of the new food.

@@emilybh6255 thank you! I'll try that.

Look for videos by jess caticles she has a lot on cat nutrition and how to transition their food

I'm fairly confident he already has videos about transitioning cats to new food. You don't just switch it completely. You do a gradual transition for as long as it takes.

Thank you for doing this, Jackson! I spent a lot of time researching cat food when I got my baby, and I still learned a lot from this video. That being said, all my research and trying over a dozen brands (she could smell the desperate rich lady on me) and my baby eats Fancy Feast 😂 a picky princess who decides what she will eat. I just buy it! The best cat food, even a vet will tell you of a cat with CKD, is food that YOUR cat will eat.

My cats were literally addicted to fancy feast. I couldn’t get them off of it for a long time until I tried Weruva. But I had two vets tell me fancy feast is the McDonald’s of cat food

Yeah, I can’t get my baby to eat anything else except for fancy feast

Jackson, I care for a lot of cats and have also always thought canned is better, and for hydration, it certainly is. However, recently 2 of my cats that I feed mostly canned, both became neurologically ill, after feeding them some high-priced pouches I was given by an animal organization. My cats loved it, but it turns out that many canned cat foods now are not being sold with enough Thiamine to support life, even though the labels say 100% balanced nutrition. They did some studies that showed about 1/5 canned food is now this way. The vet put them on a vit/mineral supplement, which hopefully will fix their deficiency, but it can be quickly deadly. They hate the supplement, and dry food, but they're holding their heads up and walking again. I would really appreciate more info on this, for everyone. No one is telling what popular brands are lacking in it, either. 😢 Thanks!

I know this comment is 3 months old, but here's my experience. I have issues with B vitamin metabolism. I'm also very invested in my cats' nutrition. I've found that natural B vitamin supplements not only work better for me (I actually have adverse reactions to their synthetic counterparts), but they have almost zero taste. I have a veterinary education and make my own cat food using a veterinary nutritionist-formulated recipe. Swapping the synthetic B complex for a natural B complex made a huge difference in palatability! If you are struggling to get your cats to eat their supplements, I would suggest working with your vet to find a similar dose vitamin that contains the natural forms of the vitamins.

I always feed my cat half budget food and half high end. Fancy feast for the budget and tiki or Ziwi for the high end. That way she gets the benefits of the high end while I only have to pay mid range per meal Also buying in bulk can really cut costs Love your work Jackson
