My favorite part is how intense the conductor gets when she’s belting out, “TOUCH MEEEE!” He’s like, “Okay, boys. We’ve trained for this. Keep. Up.”

Most renditions seem to neglect how this is sung by an old cat, nostalgic for the old days... it's really not about singing with a powerful voice. Paige nails it.

I agree. It's sung by a weary, old cat who longs for the past yet wishes to be reborn. Paige sings it perfectly.

she's not even on the musical stage in costume or anything just simply performing the song for an audience in a hall and Elaine just takes herself into character. She probably didn't have to in this performance but she did it anyway since it's so natural. The body language, facial expressions, voice EVERYTHING. perfection..

I think what makes Elaine Paige's rendition the ultimate one is how she balances her voice, performance and emotion so well. She has an amazing voice, but doesn't use it to it's full here, because that's not what's needed, she offsets it with the understanding of who is supposed to be singing it, a grizzled old cat, one that's wracked with emotion, sadness, but still has hope and love. She understand the song and the role. She doesn't just come out and sing the song, she performs it, as the title says. Perfect.

What a beautiful description of what Miss Paige does here. When you described an old cat that still has hope and love, you truly touched my heart. I never thought of the song in that way. I'm not sure of exactly what I thought. I was always so impressed by the belting of "Tooooooouuuuuccccchhhhh Meee! I never thought of the deeper meaning. I'm not expressing myself well at all but I wanted you to know that you opened my mind and heart today. Thank you!

Agreed, Betty Buckley's version doesn't have the same emotional vulnerability and instead seems too controlled and cold. Buckley also ad libs the timing a bit too much. Though much of this will be due to the director's vision, not just the singer's personal style. Whereas for the role of Norma Desmond, Buckley's style works better than Paige's.

If only I could have this exact rendition in costume with the cast ... I noted there seems to be tears welling up in Elaine Paige's eyes in the last close-up at the end of the song. Midnight not a sound from the pavement Has the moon lost her memory? She is smiling alone In the lamplight, the withered leaves collect at my feet And the wind begins to moan Memory, all alone in the moonlight I can dream of the old days I was beautiful then I remember the time I knew what happiness was Let the memory live again Every streetlamp seems to beat A fatalistic warning Someone mutters and the street lamp gutters And soon It will be morning Daylight I must wait for the sunrise I must think of a new life And I mustn''t give in. When the dawn comes Tonight will be a memory too And a new day will begin Burnt out ends of smoky days The stale cold smell of morning A streetlamp dies; another night is over Another day is dawning Touch me! It''s so easy to leave me All alone with the memory Of my days in the sun If you touch me, you''ll understand what happiness is Look, and new day has begin.

One of the great mezzo Sopranos...So many have sung this, Barbara Streisand does a very fine job, but no one I've ever heard sings it with the passion of Elaine. . This is her song and always will be..

I like her performance the best, she just carries so much regret and longing for bygone days in her voice, that really follows the lyrics. Performances that really sell the emotional weight always impress me more than a technically perfect one.
