When I was in highschool we had a graphic arts class. Running presses and various printing and binding methods. I took it for 2 years and it was a good time. Screen printing and linoleum block printing were my favorites.

Neat, can't wait to use this! What I have been doing is: spraying the back of the handcut stencil on paper with adhesive spray, then waiting for tack, then laying it on my item, then pouncing with ink tamper!

This has been tremendously helpful. I like the paper method. I always thought you need to have transparency film. This is much simpler to cut and get the edges fine vs. the little slivers I seem to get with film.

Thank you for all the great information. So this is very refreshing. I learned how to screen print using emulsion, and I went on to work as a screen printer thinking that emulsion was the only way to print...then I lost my job and moved into horticulture, but recently I found my old screens and thought, hey how did people do this stuff before emulsion...and here we are. Thank you. I look forward to 'getting back to basics' As an aside, I love cutting stencils, I have been a stencil graffiti artist for years. So now I can apply it to my screens. Excellent.

I did some tests here with this stencil technique and I had some pretty decent results. It's worth to say that I never had any experience with screen printing and your videos have been quite inspiring for me!!! I'm using a water based ink, so in the first attempt I missed the addition of the "retarder" to the ink (actually, I didn't now that I had to do this mixture) and screwed up my print and my screen in a few minutes because the ink dried too fast :(. Later, I was able to clean my screen with a solvent though. In the next test, I finally succeed and had a great pleasure on making some nice prints. The retarder was the key, the printing process lasted 40-50 minutes, and the ink didn't dry. After the printing I was able to just wash the screen with water and the whole ink was removed, leaving some "ghosts" only. And again, the retarder saved the day. Another thing that is important to mention is that I'm using a small cutter plotter to make my stencils which is handy to get precision on cut and it's a really time saver. Thanks again for your time on making these videos for us, I really appreciate! :)

+Diana L If you mean how to remove emulsion, you'll need a pressure washer and emulsion remover to do that. But for a paper stencil situation you can remove the paper and clean with the appropriate solvent for your inks.

+Moni Zapata Sorry, don't know how I missed your comment. Oh yes I do. G+ screwing things up as usual. But you can print a lot of prints with the paper stencil but you cannot reuse it after taking it off the screen. But Gowthaman T is correct, you can use plotter cut sticker vinyl to do stencils as well. But you can only reuse the stencil if you can pull it off in one piece and reapply it to the screen again later. Thanks for watching. You can only do an image like that as a posterization. It's basically a very high contrast rendition of the art so you can cut out the shades as spot colors. If that makes any sense.... There are a lot of stenciling videos on KZbin that will show you that type of work. So, yes, it can work if the artwork is done correctly. Thanks for watching. One tip with the acetate sheets, is do not leave the ink to dry, wash it straight off after you done your line of prints.If you leave it to dry it makes the stencil curl up completely and you can no longer use it again.If you wash it straight off you can let it dry on a table flat.I have done some very intricate stencils, some have taken me days to cut out, only to have them curl up in a few hours lol very annoying indeed.Thank you once again for your help and advice, you make great videos!

These paper stencils produce amazing results in terms of sharpness of edges; as good or better than what's possible with burned-in emulsion screens. I tried this for screen printing some large block letters (all straight lines), using a new razor blade guided by a ruler to cut the paper stencils, and I couldn't believe how good the print came out; it almost looked like I'd stuck die-cut letters onto the shirt. With the best quality emulsion, a 100% opaque film positive printed at an extremely high resolution, a good exposure unit which completely eliminates light scatter between the emulsion and the film positive, and a high mesh count screen, you might be able to match the sharpness you can get with a simple hand-cut stencil and an ordinary 110 mesh screen. The hand-cut stencil inherently has razor sharp edges, so you automatically bypass all those things which can go wrong and give you less-than-sharp edges when burning in a screen. Plus the sharpness of the integrated stencil of a burned-in screen is limited by the mesh count and by the resolution of the printer used to make the film positive. Hand-cut stencils bypass such limitations, and effectively have infinite resolution, because hand-cutting a paper stencil is a 100% analog process. It's too bad that hand-cut stencils are so limited with regard to complexity of design for which they can realistically be used, but in the case of simple designs for which they are suited, I doubt the quality of the print can be beaten by any other method.
@CatspitProductions
@CatspitProductions 10 жыл бұрын
Paper stencils are very cool but they are not quite as capable as emulsion stencils. And with garments where we are printing on a porous knitted surface we lose resolution inherently in the process. With the proper experience and set up a screen printer should be able to outperform a paper stencil with emulsion easily. Graphic screen printing does very technical work printing membrane switches and electronics. Other precision materials are produced with emulsion stencils and stainless steel mesh. These are situations in which they would measure mesh tension, elongation, stencil distortion and measurement precision. Plus with a paper stencil, unless you use a plotter, corners or angles and curves are very difficult to achieve cleanly. But a paper stencil can do a lot and is very powerful when you know how to use them. There are some famous artists who use only paper type stencils. Thanks for watching. CatspitProductions Most of this is just academic, because at the extreme end it involves things you can't see with the naked eye, but the point is, a hand-cut stencil can give you ~perfect results without needing to know anything more than how to use an X-Acto knife and a ruler. To get ~perfect results with an emulsion stencil, you need specialized equipment and knowledge, and even if you have those things, you can still get bad results. For example, I have a screen printed T-shirt made by a somewhat large screen printing company (they have been in business for several decades and have a couple dozen employees, including a secretary and a guy who only does artwork), and it has "sawtooth" edges on the angled straight lines and curves. Here's a picture: i.imgur.com/zYhJI2q.jpg By comparison, here is a picture of the shirt I screen printed yesterday using a hand-cut paper stencil, and it was literally the first time I've ever screen printed anything (yes, it is a bootleg, but it is a one-off only for myself): i.imgur.com/9gLmAAq.jpg The most precise methods of making an emulsion stencil could only ever hope to equal the sharpness and straightness of lines you can get with a hand-cut stencil. With a high-quality steel ruler, an ultra sharp blade, and an ideal material for cutting the stencil out of, a straight line cut on a stencil is straight down to a microscopic level (ordinary typing paper wouldn't be the most precise stencil material possible, something like vinyl would be better, though paper is plenty precise for a T-shirt), even if it was cut at an e.g. 45 degree angle. A CNC plotter inherently can't make as perfect lines at an angle as you can by hand, guided by a straight edge, because it is digital, and works on a grid (it can, however, make perfectly straight horizontal and vertical lines, due to the nature of a grid). They may look straight to the naked eye (which of course, is all that generally matters), but under magnification you'd see the "stair-stepping" it had to do to make an angled line. The exact same thing applies to digital printers (e.g., inkjet, laser). So any emulsion stencil which was made from a film positive which was created on a digital printer will be limited by the stair-stepping on angled lines and curves. A stencil cut out by hand with the help of a compass, ruler, and other traditional drafting tools will have no such limitations.
@CatspitProductions

MaximRecoil In my opinion emulsions are easier to work with than paper stencils when it comes to shirts. There's no debate really, sorry. Emulsions will blow away paper stencils, trust me. I do know what I am talking about with screen printing. And unless you're some kind of perfect robot I believe there are many plotters that will cut a stencil or other materials for that matter better than anyone can do by hand. Saw toothing is a problem of the bridging characteristics of the emulsion in relation to the solids content. This can be caused by a poor emulsion, incorrect mesh count, improper exposures, improper washout, and incorrect mesh preparation. Mesh to emulsion adhesion issues may also be a simple cause of this. The inkjet printed film positive is not a big concern. That is a common misnomer in screen printing with beginners. You don't need a high resolution printer to get a great film positive. The small stepping of a digital print does not translate to screen. It would have to be visible to the naked eye to possibly show up on screen. In fact I can take rough edged art and often it will translate fine to screen especially on a 110 or 125/70 depending on how bad it is.There are many, many reasons emulsion blows away paper stencils in all aspects. And yes in resolution too. You just have to know what you are doing. You don't necessarily need anything special. But to each his own :)

+MaximRecoil I'm sorry I don't really have time to debate a fact with you. I'm here to teach and if you don't understand what I am telling you I cannot really help you. Emulsion stencils will out perform paper stencils in every way. If you don't trust me ask another screen printer who has 20 plus years of experience.

Cool video man. I was a sign printer about 30 years ago. Just make the box on the screen an inch or more smaller than your template/stencil and it'll never bleed over onto the shirt itself. Well it will eventually..its paper.

@twocanplayatthat Thank you very much! I’m glad you like this one so much. I think I could easily do a dozen at least. A heavier more waxy paper should work best but it’s always better to be on the thin side I think. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠

@CatspitProductions ive found that card stock works well it lasts longer because its thicker but its not too thick to have a hard time cutting.

Great video! Thank you very much for doing these for us.It really helps to see someone else going through the step of doing screen printing with paper or card stencils.How many t shirts do you think you could get out of one stencil? I have been trying out different cards and came across a wax coated card, which they told me in store was good for printing as it lasts a lot longer because it's waxed.I have tried 'acetate sheets' which works well but takes longer to cut out.

I think I would tape the paper to the screen to avoid the lines. :) I like this method. I'm starting to do screen printing and this may help me dive in. As the emulsion method I'm not comfortable with yet! Practicing today. Thanks for the videos!!

+huttomomof3 Yes, a bit more tape would have done it. Don't be afraid of emulsion and scoop coaters. You can do it. It just takes a little practice. You're welcome. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! - catspitscreenprintsupply.com/

You’re welcome. My pleasure to help out. I used normal copy paper to do these with plastisol inks. I found the thinner the paper the better the print but also if the paper had a waxy or glossy finish that would be good. You know, you want the paper to resist soaking in the ink some. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠

Thanks! Glad you like my videos and I appreciate your support online :) You could do both the text and the wolf on the same piece of paper. The challenge is to find a font that will be able to be cut into a stencil. I do believe there is a font for Windows called “Stencil” that will create the old style stencil letters you can easily cut out. Thanks for watching and leaving a comment! ☠

This is still very useful in a business, because you can accept 1 order of print by using this. No photo emulsion, sensitizer, and hardener will be used. Just pure skill in stencil. By the way, you can prevent the slipping by using tape.

If you are doing multiple prints of the same design use strips of sticky tape at the edges under the screen after the stencil is picked up on the screen.I used to print large billboards with paper stencils.Used to because now we have vynil cutters to do the job.Cheers.

Thanks for the great video, it was very informative. Not sure if this will work but masking off a tiny bit more of the screen may help reduce the chances of encountering a sliver.
