Thanks for continuing with the C. dowiana. I am following this series with you before investing time and $ in one of these. It will be interesting to compare growing methods with these two. Appreciate your videos. And....congrats great-grandpa.

Hi Pat and thanks for the comment. It should prove interesting to watch the difference between the potted dowians and the mounted one. Hope to have some good news on them in a few weeks. Take care. Ed

@@EdsOrchids Ed, I have taken the plunge and bought one of the Cattleya dowiana variety Rosita. The plant is about one year from flowering. Need your best advice: should I grow it in large orchiata bark? (I live in southeast Florida, USA. My orchids are grown outdoors under a 5' north facing eave.) Thanks for your help.
@EdsOrchids4 жыл бұрын
If I lived where you do I would give it as much light as possible including sunshine and I would have it mounted. I would take into consideration the natural growing habitat of the plant which is high in the tree canopy of tropical forests. They like to be given high humidity, plenty of water and heat. They also like to become totally dry before re-watering and also not too much fertilizer......half the recommended dose every week with fresh water in between these times. If you prefer it to be potted then the large orchiata bark will be ideal with the same cultivation regime. Hope this answers some of your question Pat and the best of luck with the rosita. Ed

I think it could be a bumper year for lockdown babies, my hairdresser informed me she was pregnant. Anyhow, many Congratulations Ed, your third great-grandchild, wonderful news. Mounting and tying is always fiddly especially when videoing. It will be interesting to see how they compare in growth habit. Thanks for sharing your joyous news.

In my climate and conditions here in Florida, I found it works great to put in coco quior or mount without moss! Yours should do well in your environment!

Congratulations on having your 3rd great grand child. I purchased some bag babies at our big box hardware store. The first one is the largest one, in fact she has sheif coming up, so maybe blooms coming. I just purchased new potting medium it had charcoal,grow stones and wood chips in the mix. The second one is very small and is in about 1 in pot. Yes 1 in square. Each are a part of the Cattleya family. Would that mix be good for each?
@EdsOrchids4 жыл бұрын
Hi Jay/ Cattleyas like to be in a substrate which is very open and which allows everything to dry out very quickly. Those plants you have are very small and will be difficult to cultivate and demand the correct care. Ed.
@michaelmccarthy40774 жыл бұрын
when mounting a Cattleya, I never put moss between the plant and the mount, only over the roots to protect them. Eventually I can remove the moss if need be but it usually falls away all on its own anyway.
@EdsOrchids4 жыл бұрын
Yes Michael once the plants have become established I will slowly remove the sphagnum before it becomes troublesome. Ed.
