The coconut shell is often used in Asia because it holds water well. It’s being used by most private growers too over there. As it gets very warm in many parts of Asia, it’s one of the most commonly used media for epiphytic orchids there. I’ve seen it in most private and commercial collections in Southern Vietnam. It’s just a way of recycling nature’s natural sources as it also is used as “firing wood” for ovens and furnisses.

With our cooler temps, it tends to stay too wet for too long.

@@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai I agree but when used in a warm environment it can help to keep humidity up. However, it tends to break down and can cause problems in cooler growing temps

Oh no! Those damned pliers, you're better than I am, I would have been unable to maintain that control, hope you had another splash of vino! The mount looks great!... Kelly

It took me hours to get the coconut fibre off the roots of my cattleya and I was lucky enough to save a lot of the roots.

It depends how broken-down it it's. When it's fresh it's very hard and doesn't crumble.

Just watched your Cattlaya series. Thank you for showing all aspects, and the information. Nice also that you being flexible, and not saying that you have to be rigid with the care. Does that make sense.

The nice thing about that plant is that the rhizome is very tight, so the plant will be slow to spread and run out of room. It probably could have been placed a little higher on the mount but probably won't matter much in the long run. (and there is always the chance that new growth will pop out on the older part of the plant)

It looks like the last set of growth came out in various places.

Be careful to be careful! I'm thinking of mounting an orchid as well, but not today (bleh😒) as there would certainly be an accident...possibly tomorrow...

Beautiful mount, Roger. I always giggle and think about your Tolumnias when you do the "I don't need a tag..." bit.
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai5 жыл бұрын
I'm luck with this one as I have no other orchid that looks like it but yes, all the Tolumnias look similar. (Once they bloom, I'll get the tags sorted out.)

Great job , l've been doing similar today also with my live moss , which I use more frequently now than the other type. Definitely to uck weather to be outside gardening. Thank goodness for the orchid obsession.

Nice. I’m going to try my first mount today. Your aggressive clean up of those roots taught me a lot.

When I worked as a floral designer we used ikebana shears to cut heavier stems and branches. If you ever had the misfortune of pinching the inside of your palm while cutting through a thick branch you never forgot it! There would be language I guarantee. I shied away from the ikebana shears for just that reason.

Do Cattleya lose all their roots every year?
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai5 жыл бұрын
Certainly not. If left undisturbed, the roots can last for many years. Some just have a 'trait' of loosing roots when disturbed which makes it important to repot/mount when a new set of roots are growing.

Well done! Enjoyed seeing your work with this plant. What type of care do Bulbophyllums prefer? I only have one which isn't doing much.
@RogersOrchidsGardenandBonsai5 жыл бұрын
Bulbos have a huge variety - some are warm growers some cool - some are even classed as cold growers. Most don't like too much light and need to stay moist.
