With all that being said, I have to say I loved the moment where Wesker, in an effort to save Scarface from being ground by a buzzsaw, picks up a taxidermied thylacine and smacks Catwoman with it. It's the only time you really see him actually do something antagonistic without the dummy's direct involvement.

An amazing deep dive into Catwoman's personality and the real reason why she and Bruce can never truly be together. This episode is a great example of how the showrunners did an amazing job of world-building with references from past episode. Scarface and the Ventriloquist are on point and even more entertaining than their origin episode. All in all a great episode in Selina's penultimate appearance in BTAS

For those not aware: The Lady or The Tiger is a short story about the trial of a young man who is secretly the lover of a princess. He is forced to choose between two doors; behind one is a tiger that will maul him to death, behind the other is a woman who, if he picks her door, he will be married to. He looks to the princess and she gestures to a door, knowing that she either has to watch him killed or watch him spend the rest of his days in the arms of another woman. So as he reaches for the door the question is left up to the reader, which door did the princess point him to-the lady or the tiger?

@@Sojoboscribe my mother used to have a book that was a compilation of scary stories. One I remember well was called The Maze and the Monster. I can’t recall all the details exact but the plot is about a man who gets put into a maze, at one end is a paradise and at the other is a monster, and a reference is made to The Lady or the Tiger. What I remember most us that he finds a richly decorated room with a beautiful woman laying on a bed waiting for him. As he stumbles into her arms he boasts about “I beat them, I found paradise.” Then the woman whispers to him “No, you found the monster!” And the last thing he sees is her fingers reaching for his eyes.

The Ventriloquist is such an out-there villain, I tend to forget that he/Scarface made a second appearance as the primary villain(s). The fact they're paired up with Catwoman is even more odd in hindsight, though perhaps also fitting. In a way, they're cut from the same cloth: one's a common thief and the other's a gangster. But costume aside, Catwoman is significantly more down-to-earth. Probably the most out of any of Batman's rogues gallery.

This episode is another great example of how to tell a complete story in a half-hour. (Which it feels like newer shows don't know how to do anymore) A lot happens, in Catwalk, but it's really well-rounded. I appreciated how patient Batman seemed to be with Selena. He was really rooting for her reform, and I almost wish the last shot was on his sad expression, rather than the tacked on quote. Good episode, tho. My only other note would be Scarface seemed a little *too expressive for a doll in this one
@wattsink2009
@wattsink2009 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly, Catwoman’s character arc is one of the bigger overarching problems with this series. Because she was forced to reform so early in the series, a relapse episode like this needed to happen, or else we would have had only two episodes where Catwoman is truly Catwoman. But doing this, not only retcons her previously established love for Batman and/or Bruce Wayne, but also negates any possibility for them to be together in the future. And I said “retcon” earlier, because the flashback at the beginning, and the way she acts through the rest of the episode suggests that she was never actually in love with Batman, which contradicts what we were shown and told in previous episodes.

I think that's why Catwoman nowadays is more of an anti hero, and pairs up with Batman more, as the two really seem to have the whole "other half of the coin" feeling to them, and works, as seen here in this episode.

Strangely the only part of this one I remember well is Selina mocking Scarface with 'what's the gag?'. Not villains who show up together often, and really any other rogue could have taken Scarface's spot, though I'm glad to see him again. I feel like maybe Selina should have demonstrated more skill here since she's supposed to be able to equal Batman in most areas such as parkour and subterfuge. That way she wouldn't have had to trash her own animal activist ideals with the tiger ploy and her new resolve to be Catwoman no matter what the consequences would carry greater weight. As it is, there's little doubt that her next encounter with Batman would likely end with her in jail unless he continues to remain soft on her.

This was the episode where TAS FINALLY got Catwoman right! Its a shame because so many of the other key rogues for Batman were handled almost flawlessly in this show, but for some reason, they struggled with Catwoman. Cat and the Claw was a fine introduction that got bogged down with a less than stellar villain, and then in the rest of her appearances, she was a damsel in distress, which feels like a misuse of her character. Here, we finally see the Catwoman/Batman divide that defines their relationship as she keeps falling into bad habits. And this was all facilitated by one of my favorite Batman villains, The Ventriloquist. This episode is a delight.

FINALLY a good catwoman episode. As I have previously mentioned on said episodes, that whenever Catwoman is the central character in a BTAS episode - said episode is not very good since the writers have no idea how to use Selina and invent some stupid environmentalist/animal rights supporting shit that adds nothing to her character. Thankfully, here she is doing what she should have been doing all along - seducing Batman with the hopes of getting ehmm a hard ride on Batmans batmobile, stealing stuff from rich assholes and being in general untrustworthy. We see her here as the thrill addict and the selfish cat that she is (and should be allowed to be more often - I think the Harley Quinn show did her really well in the short amount of screentime that she had). I also like the "Extinction is for wimps" line. She is, in at least some small degree, supposed to lack empathy and good writers understand that. Some parts are unfortunately not solved - this must be the millionth time Selina is captured, put under a death trap and saved by Batman - but she is allowed to play him along with a false story and is (very fittingly) avoiding the consequences of her actions. It is also nice to see Scarface again - while not as memorable this time around (he is more of a foil to Catwoman here, and despite being the mastermind is clearly the second fiddle villain in this episode). Personally, I would have preferred if he hadn´t been destroyed this time around - he is starting to come off as a joke if he never survives a run-in with Batman, but like the death trap - we can´t have it all (like Catwoman), can we? What more? The fight scenes! They are great all around - especially with Batman and Rhino! I also do wonder - what happened with Ratso. Maybe Scarface dealt with him Capone style! You could also argue that this is another reform episode (due to is focus on the Catwoman/Selina inner conflict, her choices and her past), but I refuse to count it as one - considering how badly Catwoman was handled by the creative team before this. Give the girl a chance to be a villain first before trying to push an unnecessary reform chance onto her, you assholes! No wonder she reject her reform - it was poorly done in the first place! I am probably giving it slightly too high grade here, but it is refreshing to finally see a Catwoman episode not fucked up. Verdict: 4 out of 5 Bats

Now if only BTAS did something similar towards Mr. Freeze and his sudden return to villainy after his wife was cured. I don't care what anyone says, that episode where Mr. Freeze decides to spread as much misery and dispair throughout Gotham all because of his condition had worsened, to the point where he considers himself to be no longer human, and his inability to be with his wife seems really forces. It doesn't exactly help the situation considering that his entire goal was all about his wife. First Episode, getting revenge on Ferris Boyle for both his condition and the supposed death of Nora. Second Episode, helping Grant Walker with his plans in order to reunite with his wife. He then betrays Walker after realizing that his wife would forever hate him if Walker's plans were successful. Sub-Zero Movie: Nora's Cryochamber is damaged beyond repair, and she only has weeks left to live. Desperate, Freeze was willing to perform a surgery on a living human being, AKA Barbara Gordon, and then transplant their vital organs to save Nora, even if it meant killing the Commissioner's daughter to do so. Third Episode, He's lonely and miserable, and sees himself as a monster, and thus wants everyone to feel his misery. Can you see which one doesn't match with Mr. Freeze's overall motive? And this isn't the only time when Season 4 of BTAS butchered the characterization of various villains. Remember Two-Face? At the end of the episode Second Chance, Harvey Dent actually comes out twice. Once where Two-Face had to make a choice to rely on the coin or make his own choice. True, Two-Face did take over, but there was progress. And then, in the same episode, where Two-Face is returned to Arkham, the Harvey personality took over again to have a brief talk with Bruce Wayne. This one episode showed that Harvey Dent was actually making progress and there was a potential for a redemption. Unfortunately, Season 4 happened, and Two-Face has taken over 99% of the time. Only this time, Two-Face decided to invoke acts of terrorism, as he threatened to unleash a deadly nerve gas that could kill thousands of people in Gotham. And then there's the other 1%, where it's revealed that Two-Face had a secret third personality that even Two-Face didn't know about. That personality being The Judge. Aand the worst part is that there was no attempt to fix Harvey Dent at any point in this season.

That's why I see his apperance in Batman Beyond as way to fix his character. There he was trying to reform after his wife death and wanted to redeem himself for his crimes. It was Powers betrayal that causes him to go back to be a villain. Even in his final moments he saves Batman's life, saying that he is the only one who cared, really showing the irony of their rivalry. Batman may be Freeze's enemy but it's also the one who shows him compassion.

@@jinpei05 Well, wouldn't have been logical to seek out his wife first and then see what would happened afterwards? I mean, in nearly every other iteration between Mr. Freeze and Nora, the love have unconditional love towards each other. There have been several versions where Nora is released from her cryochamber and it's shown that She still loves her husband even in spite of his committing crimes to fund a cure for her and his condition. In the Arkham series, it ends with the two embracing each other, with Nora still diagnosed with the illness that's killing her. Despite his desperate attempt to both refreeze her and continue finding a cure, Nora tells Victor to stop looking for a cure and to just enjoy the last few days with each other. And Mr. Freeze, reluctantly accepts his wife's dying request. And in the Harley Quinn show, both Freeze and Nora had a similar love towards each other. Hell, Freeze literally dies performing a blood transfusion in an attempt to save his wife. And much like the Arkham version, the two had unconditional love towards each other.... until that one episode where Nora attended Poison Ivy's bachelorette party and started having an affair with Maxie Zeus, but I digress. My point is, is that Mr. Freeze should've seen his wife first to see what she thought of him. And if she rejected him due to his conditions, then it's understandable, albeit it would still be a forced situation for Mr. Freeze to continue being a villain. But it doesn't happen. Instead, it's revealed that Nora left before Mr. Freeze returned to villainy.

Unfortunately, after this episode, Catwoman became more petty, antagonistic and a lot less interesting as a character for her remaining 3 appearances, the last two of which had her hitting on Nightwing (yes, really) and even trying to kill him at the climax and the other one had her act borderline bipolar with her random wild card behavior as he gets entangled with Thomas Blake's cat cult. Her interaction with Batman also ceased being fun or interesting to watch, as now they basically acted like bitter exes. I have a feeling that the writers didn't really know what to do with her after this episode and what they did really just made me dislike her as a character. And for being one of the most iconic Batman characters and having a number of focus episodes here, this version of Catwoman never really made a big impression, did she? Notice how when people discuss the highlights of this show, they never mention the character and Adrienne Barbeau's performance or ever list a Catwoman-centric episode among their personal favorite BTAS episodes? Mat-Bay lauded many of the show's villains who aren't Joker and Harley, but Catwoman never received any major praise? Actually, even Bruce Timm and co often mentioned some of the Catwoman episodes as disappointments or among their least favorite episodes. Overall, Catwoman seems to have been one of the weak points of the series along with Penguin (outside of "Birds of a Feather" and the villain team-up episodes he was a part of).

I suppose in a way, we can say Catwoman was also a tragic villain on the show. Yeah, we know it is more “her avoiding Batman” but it did seem like this would have been a story where if it played just a little bit different, she probably could have turned her life around for the better. And I know there have been a few stories that had explored this, such as the one Batman movie featuring Hush. In the end though, it always does seem like there is no way to ensure a happily ever after with these two.

I don't really see her as a tragic character. Actually, this episode made me see her as rather petty and selfish, and her following 3 appearances only made that worse XD

This is a great Catwoman episode. Batman and Catwoman have always had a sort of will they won't they romance brewing even back in that old Adam West series but there she was portrayed as more of a straight villain so there was no real chance of them ever being a couple even if they hinted at a romantic interest quite a few times. Here Catwoman started out as a straight villain but they also portrayed her as a bit of a hero in some episodes which added some hope that the character actually could be reformed and wasn't a completely lost cause. The different ways Batman himself is portrayed also emphasizes the different dynamics in their relationships. Adam West Batman was clearly attracted to Catwoman but realized she was a lost cause and never gave in to that desire. It was never a huge loss for him to have to fight her over and over again because of that. Here however Batman's reaction at the end really tells you that he actually believed Catwoman could be turned from crime and he actually feels like he lost whatever relationship he could have had with her when she returns to her old life. We would see more of a redemption arc for the character in later stories where she learns to use the Catwoman persona for good rather than petty theft but for now it's still left rather ambiguous which makes this version of Catwoman far more interesting than versions who came before. This is really a minor nit pick and I don't usually comment on the animation but there is something I noticed which kind of annoys me. In one scene when Selina is putting on her mask it's shown as a separate piece from the rest of her costume and she puts it on from front to back so her hair just sort of vanishes when she puts the mask on. It doesn't really make sense for her mask to work that way because there's clearly no seem between her mask and her suit which would indicate that it's all one piece. Plus her hair would have to stick out in the back like Batgirl's does instead it just randomly disappears. There's another scene in the same episode which does show the mask as being attached to the back of her costume and she puts it on from back to front. This later scene also animates her hair being tucked into the back of the mask rather than just suddenly not existing anymore. Honestly with as tight as her costume is exactly how her hair fits under the material without bulging out is always going to be an issue but it's at least some what more fluid in the animation to at least try to make it move with the material as she puts her mask on rather than just POOF it's gone. There are a lot of issues and inconsistencies with exactly how character's masks are suppose to work through out this series and this is just one of those moments I noticed that kind of takes me out of the episode as I notice it.

Recently, I've begun wondering what if Catwoman had been a character in Mask of the Phantasm prior to this episode. Between trying to prove Batman's innocence in the mobsters' murderers and possibly dealing with jealousy of Bruce's attraction towards Andrea and being forced to confront the fact that she may see him more than just a friend like she claims, I think she would've had a good character arc in that movie. Ah well, I suppose that's what Fanscription's for. Next time: Less than a year after his explosive debut in the pages of Knightfall, Bane makes his first appearance in any Bat-media outside of the comics.

Y'know, I think what bothers me about Selina's character the most is that constant tease thing with Bruce. For the genius he is, you'd think he'd actually give up on her, knowing literally everything she does is essentially to benefit herself. For once I'd like to see a story arc where Catwoman doesn't have her 'get out of jail free' card with Batman and just see how she responds to not being given special treatment because she makes Bruce horny.

Agreed, it does get a bit tiresome. She should at least be skilled enough not to need Batman's mercy every time, since she's supposed to be his match in most areas. Maybe that's why the comics keep giving her burglary jobs in places other than Gotham so she doesn't run into him.

He's still human. Intellectually, he knows his feelings for Selina are ultimately going to be self-destructive but he still can't just switch off those feelings for her (actually a running theme in most of romantic relationships, Andrea being an ironic exception.)

From her very first appearance on this series, Catwoman always struck me as one of the most weakly defined characters. The problem, as I saw it, was that she was almost never allowed to be truly heroic or truly evil - and on those rare occasions when she WAS truly evil, it was unconvincing. She seemed less evil than even the Penguin, who is so (relatively) well-behaved that he doesn't have to go to Arkham Asylum when he is captured. I had always assumed that that was because she was a woman, because I remembered how condescendingly the female villains had been treated on the '60s TV show. But then I realized that Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn and the rest could be just as nasty as the boys. Selina Kyle always seemed to be outclassed. I believe that only the movies have done Catwoman justice. She needs to be as ruthless as an actual cat would be. I loved Michelle Pfeiffer's depiction of her as a sadistic, mentally ill, and sexually perverse anarchist in BATMAN RETURNS, although I understand that the animated series would have never been allowed to depict her that way. Anne Hathaway also did a good job of painting Catwoman as ruthless and cruel when she had to be. And Zoe Kravitz's version of Selina was perfectly willing to carry around a gun and attempt to shoot people - including her own father! Selina Kyle has never done time in Arkham as far as I know, but otherwise she HAS managed to be a full-fledged villain on at least some occasions. But, unfortunately, even the comic books themselves haven't gotten Catwoman right. In her very first appearance back in 1940, she wore a dress and a garter belt, and Batman threatened to spank her! (If anyone should be spanked, it should be Harley, because she's both a clown and a bratty woman-child, so you can humiliate her a bit without taking her edge off.) And then Frank Miller turned her into a fat, elderly prostitute (which, unfortunately, became part of her origin story in the canonical comics) who's just there to get beaten to a pulp and then dressed as Wonder Woman for some bizarre reason. I can't think of any other "Batman" character who's been so consistently handled so badly, except maybe for the Riddler.

Real subtle Selina, save the "last of it's kind or arrest me," totally not metaphoring herself there. Though it also highlights the dualism of not Batman and Catwoman against each other but of themselves. Batman can't help but save the day just as Catwoman can't help but be the thief. Selina and Bruce might have been able to be together but the Bat and the Cat? Edit: The use of the Ventriloquist/Scarface further emphasis this divide, we have an actual dissociate person struggling with that illness causing the primary (Wesker) to act in ways in cognitively would rather not.

Sadly this represents Bruce relationship with his alter-ego. As long he is Batman he can never commit to normal happy life. Being Batman is what gives him a higher purpose beyond anything else, including love and the opportunity for "happy life with wife and children".

@@alexandrefrauches132 Yeah, that's the read I got. All three major characters have a need (Wesker/Scarface, Bruce/Justice, Selina/Theft) that overrides what they actually want/happiness. That Wesker is directly addressed as mentally ill but still parallel the other two is subtle subtext that they aren't all put together either.
