Really glad to see you happy and not sad. Most sailors, run with the chart plotter zoomed pretty much all the way in. It allows you to see the rocks small flat islands and atolls. And a lot also use google earth in some situations. I’m Not a sailor, just watched a ton of KZbin videos.check with your friends about it,stay safe and have fun!

Always compare Navionics with a chart. Early on I’ve had some close calls. Just like you it always wants me hugging the coast and bringing me through hazardous areas.

The zoomed-in camera during the scary part was Academy Award winning cinematography! It really made the situation feel super dicey. It was intentional, of course. 🙂

I never use the auto routing. Use time to plan your route your self if you want ro be safe

The chart companies become like tobacco companies when they offer autorouting. Disclaimers or apologies do not absolve them of their evil behaviour. Simply put - do not ever use autorouting. Always plot way points manually and run along the planned route with the chart zoomed in enough to reveal the nasties that vanish at lesser zoom levels. This vanishing is another evil feature of electronic charts. Be aware that underwater hazards at a 'safe' depth can become a problem for a boat's draught as dips in sea swell drop the keel closer to them. Boomp. The shallower water near such hazards increases the amplitude of swells, thereby increasing the likelihood of the boomp. Well, really more of a crunch, glug, glug, glug. I'm glad you got through the gap unscathed. That must have been nerve wracking. I remember studying the high resolution Antares charts for a similar gap called Fisherman's Passage, just south of Castlebay in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. I then waited for high tide, slack water and calm weather before motoring through, closely guided by GPS, with plenty of water under our raised centreboard and reduced draught. Autorouting put you in a position you didn't have time to plan for, but you made it and it becomes an experience and lesson learned. Phew! 🙂

So many lessons learned in a short amount of time haha! We were winging it in the beginning which has put us in a lot of iffy positions. Glad we made it through this one, it was very scary for sure 😅
