@@zebraburst4743 Actually it'd be geeky. There's the old joke about the difference between the geek and nerd. Ask what "Force" is. @@TonySamedi nerd having negative connotations is pretty old, but sure maybe it is more insulting to some but being in pretty nerdy circles I've yet to meet them until now. Though. Plenty of people use nerd/geek interchangeably colloquially, and unless you're a semantics-purist and think all adaptations and changes in language is inherently wrong/bad and should be discouraged... the use of nerd in this context is correct. Getting caught up in the semantics of nerd vs geek is in and of itself... pretty nerdy, IMO. It's also one of the more annoying kinds of things to be nerdy about, because most people discussing linguistics simply go on semantics, syntax, and codified definitions. Pretty bland, IMHO. At the end the semantics of "it's nerdy" and "it's geeky" = pretty much the same thing. General comment: I would also hesitate to prescribe the OP any personal values of the word "nerd" as negative/positive/neutral because the value of the world is still very much. He might be using it as an insult, or it might just be the word he knows to describe a niche interest in pop-culture. To the average person not involved in fandom, or whatever, nerd and geek are just same same different name.
@TonySamedi2 жыл бұрын
@@Becks-and-books I could agree, but I think the other context clues of how OP views brother and his interests is what really makes me think he means it more insultingly. I wouldn't be offended if someone I knew liked me or was at least cool with me described my funko collection or whatever as "nerdy". Have one of my relatives who absolutely thinks "real men" should be more into sports/guns/whatever do it, and I know it's absolutely meant as an insult. Considering just how much OP had devalued the stuff his brother is into. That he still sees his brother being single and collecting stuff as somehow inherently worth less than what he does with his own life? It honestly comes across to me as using what he sees as a more insulting term. It's more the context of how the OP is using it than the exact word he is using. Though I would still say someone with a 15 year old kid (meaning at least 30s, probably 40s or even 50s) is the right age for when "nerd" was really seen as more insulting in his youth.

For story 2, I was totally picturing the kid as like, a 9 or 10-year-old or something, and was confused when they said 15. I understand where the brother is coming from, especially when it comes to rare items that still have the original packaging/tags. If the figure is taken out of its packaging it loses its value so of course brother has every right to be upset because not only was a figure stolen from him, but its value has been greatly decreased. The son is 15 years old, that is plenty old enough to know that you do not steal and he should be old enough to understand how the collection is important to his uncle. Clearly OP sees his brother is overreacting, because to him “it’s just a toy“. OP just because something is not important to you that doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be important to other people. If my step cousin took my Hazbin Hotel Angel Dust plush and gave it to her elementary school daughter or daycare toddlers that she babysits to play with and the tag is removed and the mostly white plush gets stained I would be upset and demand a replacement. Returning the Boba Fett figure out of the package would be like my cousin buying a cheaper bootleg of that plush off of Amazon instead of going to the shark robot website and getting me the official one to replace the one she stole and ruined. The whole “we are family“ line doesn’t mean a thing. It doesn’t mean anything when Karen demands free money, someone’s wedding venue, or their house because the person is child free and don’t need that much space. ATU Really glad the son is being punished and some of his nonessential stuff is being sold to go to fines to pay back brother. The fact that he was going to steal it and sell it for money…. I'm a collector of many things, sports/trading cards and Funko Pops. And yes out of box(oob) does lower the value of items. I've had other collectibles that I've collected (or hoarded lol) and always keep them sealed in original packaging. Even "toys" have value depending on a variety of situations such as rarity, age, possible misprints etc. I remember a scene between Bruce Willis and Justin Long in Live Free Die Hard where Bruce picks up a figurine and breaks it and Justin sarcastically says it's worth more broken. Great video!

Story 2: I am a collector, and understand the value of certain things. OP MUST repay the full amount. And the son needs to be punished, and made to repay the full amount. For OP to understand, how about I take their most expensive bit of clothing and cut it into pieces, and then give it back. It's the same right? Or take their car, and pull it apart and return it in a big box. It's still the same, right? The brother did NOT overreact. If it was me, he police would be involved straight away AND OP would be getting a replacement. Oh and OP is still standing by the son, even though they know he stole it TO sell. What's next, OPs wedding bands go missing? Good luck with your criminal son.

Here is a story to lighten up the mood: some months ago i was standing next to fiancee who was sitting in the couch watching tv, my phone was stitting on the side table and a notification went off, fiancee glanced at it and a few seconds later BLAM a left hook to my manhood... after a few seconds my spirit returned to my body and i managed to squeak out "why?" Then she shoves my phone in my face with what appeared to be a pair of boobs. I understand her reaction with hormones and all after seeing that, but i was innocent lol, i opened the discord message and it was a damn meme my brother sent of a tree with tumors thar look like boobs...

Mark, I totally felt your annoyance and my own "eyeroll impulse" when the second OP used the words "...but we're family..." 😑😓🙄😤 That guy seriously needs to spend more time on Reddit and be referred to AAAAAALLLL the stories of notions of "family". Particularly, when it is being used as a cop out by cowards and morons who think it is perfectly okay to steal, cheat, lie to and deceive their relatives. Afterwards, I guarantee a surprised pikachu face on the horizon! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

punish that son twice. once for being a criminal. and again for being a dumb criminal. If you're gonna take the time to research the item you're gonna steal 1. you don't leave said research where it can be found. 2. you don't ruin said item making it worthless.
@TonySamedi2 жыл бұрын

@yandereskitty2 жыл бұрын
Also number 2. As a fellow collector, I would charge as well. It's not about the fact that it's a toy. It's a collection item. The son, 15 or not, stole it. If you enable him and don't do the right thing. You'll never teach him right from wrong.

Ya know what, the OP in that second story I have to give them props. I wasn't expecting the kid (who was actually 15? I pictured some little 8 year old sneaking off to nab a toy originally) to actually face any consequences but at least the OP didn't play the "bUt FaMiLy" card to try to get him out of anything, especially when they found out how conniving the son was. I understand trying to protect your child and also not understanding someone else's hobby. There's plenty of people out there who if they explained how much they spent on Warhammer or Comic Books or MTG or Action Figures they wouldn't get it but they should've tried to respect their brother a bit more originally.

I’m honestly surprised his renters insurance is going to pay for something like that. Usually collectibles aren’t covered or get replaced with actual cash value, which would not be much. He could have bought separate insurance for collectibles which would cover it for replacement value, so that is possible, but that wouldn’t be on his renters insurance. Before anyone asks, I sell Renters and other P&C insurance for a living. Yes, every insurance company has it’s own contracts, so again it’s possible, but very unlikely. Edit: Many people don’t realize what is and isn’t covered by their insurance. I recommend reading your contracts so you aren’t blindsided(usually there is a section of what is covered, but also a separate section that are exclusions, read them!) and research if you can get better coverage elsewhere. Car, Home, Renters, Umbrella, check them all!

Last Story: "I'm not here to give some apology to a bunch of internet strangers for how I acted or seek validation. I'm here because I feel that for myself I need to admit my own wrongs and move on to a better place." Yep. Still got work to do, OP. Blaming a bunch of internet strangers whose advice and opinions YOU asked for when they didn't sing your praises and be your own personal echo chamber, shows there just might be more soul searching that needs to be done. =P

When my son was 19 he did a very bad thing. I’m not saying what. He had been making bad decisions for a couple of years, getting high and driving intoxicated, went to the service to hopefully clean up his act but got kicked out for getting high. He came to live with me but continued getting high and letting girls in my house. I kicked him out. Soon after he got arrested. His dad and I decided not to help him. He had to use a public defender and wasn’t bailed out. Believe me I cried my eyes out. He was given six years. All through that time, I wrote to him, visited him and let him I was there. When he got out, he couldn’t live with me anymore so he went to live with his paternal grandmother. She told the rules and he lived by them. He rode a bike to college and work. Worked his way up to be financially independent (though he still helps out his grandmother). It’s been over 20 years from that horrible day I got that call and now he’s happily engaged and is everyone’s favorite (grandson, brother, cousin). As ashamed as I was 20 years ago, I so proud of how he turned his life around. Parents need to let their children feel the effects of their mistakes. It’s hard as hell, I know.

Story 2 - "Well police and suing is going a bit far, I don't think a court would see him favourably for suing because a 5 year ol-15. 15 years old? Ok that shit should know way better by that age" Suing is still too far - ask for a payment plan instead if need be since OP can't afford it But police to scare the kid may be warranted wtaf EDIT: Not excusing any of it - Even if the son was 5, I'd still say payment plan needed. The brother deserves to get the full value

Way to go dad in story 2. He did the right thing in the end considering the sons motivation. Since he’s 15 the record should be sealed or expunged after he turns 18 as I don’t believe stealing something for $2200 is considered grand theft but hopefully it’ll scare the kid into not being a criminal for life.

My thoughts exactly! Who says sex stops once you become pregnant? I heard stories about couples making love/having sex during pregnancy. And good for them. In any case, you're absolutely right. Pregnancy doesn't make you less than. And those type of cheaters are too selfish and immature to even be in a relationship, much less have children.
