I don't think Story 1 has any positives. Everyone got out of that situation worse than before; GF is dumped after finally comprehending the seriousness of her actions and knows it's all her fault, OP may never game again! She literally traumatized him so badly that his main hobby, the thing he did to keep himself sane and happy during this time, is now poison to him mentally and emotionally and he may not ever game again. Mark, not every story needs to be spun in a positive light.

That was my thought, too. I don't console game, but I have my PC. I spent a lot for a laptop with a disc drive, and that would kill my writing and gaming hobbies. No one won in story one.

While i do find Mark's habit of trying to find the positive in a situation admirable (seriously Mark i do.) I agree whole heartedly with you on this. I'm a PS4 gamer, matter of fact i have my PS4 right next to me as we speak while waiting for some friends to come on and game. I still have my old PS3 and PS2 somewhere in my house, i don't play those two anymore but i keep them for the sentimental value they represent to me. (i got my PS2 back when i was still very young and would spend HOURS playing the PS1 versions of Phantom Menace and Harry Potter and the Philosopher's stone.) If i was in OP's situation i'd have booted them both out and filed for damages for the destroyed PS4, that's hundreds if not THOUSANDS of hours of OP's life lost because his girlfriend thought it would be a great idea to do something she saw on TikTok and wanted to emulate like a kid watching Jackass for the first time. I hope OP does eventually regain his passion for Gaming, and finds someone who treats him and his passions with respect and empathy and IF they decide to surprise OP with a PS5 they have the good sense to do a nice non-destructive way of doing it. (like i don't know... gift wrapping it like a normal SANE person? or if they want to go the extra mile, get some Playstation themed lounge wear and use them as little "hints" as to what OP's hypothetical future partner bought.)

Yeah to be fair you're likely right. I think the positive for me was that he was out of the relationship now rather than still being in it with these "events" happening around him, although I know this seemed to be a one-off. It was the doubling down in the story for me though, trying to justify what they had done so in my head it kind of felt like "well least you're out of that relationship that's caused this trauma in the first place". Not arguing with your opinion on things just badly laying out my thought process here but yeah I do agree with you.

That's happened to me - twice. Once with a sculpture I'd made, partially with wire coat-hangers ... a flatmate decided her need for my coat-hangers was more important than respecting my art-work. The other was some [experimental/animated Super8 & 16mm] ... several reels of cine-film I'd shot in NYC, back in the day when phomecams weren't a thing. It was that long ago (about 30 years this week) that I managed to "cast" Eddie Murphy in the background while I was interviewing a homeless Vet, and Eddie was shooting a scene for "Boomerang". Back home in London a friend 'borrowed' my film and supposedly lost it somehow. I'm still salty about it, all these years later. I also never touched film (cine or still) again. The worst part was both these friends were involved in the arts, and you'd presume they'd have far more respect.

I was reminded of the reason I had to step away from Star Wars, at least as far as the films go since I still watched/enjoyed The Mandalorian and am watching The Book of Boba Fett. I get the sequels made a lot of controversial choices but it was so annoying when people wouldn't stop bitching. It was doubly so coming from people who gave the prequels shit 20 years ago but act like they didn't when the sequels came around. It's even more stupid when the sequels made some choices that the Legends continuity ALREADY DID. Got a problem with Luke running away saying he would never do that? I recall him saying he would never turn to the Dark Side in ROTJ. Guess what a Legends book did. Made him turn to the Dark Side. So much for your hero. All this to say that the Star Wars fandom managed to do what other fandoms have consistently failed to do: kill my passion for the franchise for the time being. I can't even look at the movies without thinking about the undeserved Golden Calf status the original trilogy has among the die-hards and the fact the prequel trilogy backlash was why Lucas sold his company to Disney IN THE FIRST PLACE. So honestly, the die-hards can take some responsibility for the sequels existing at all. They hated when Lucas had full control with the prequels. That wasn't going to change if he had full control of the sequels.

Story 1: Well the GF got exactly what she deserved. She cared more about validation from strangers then she did about her own BF. And when OP was upset by her actions, her response was to gaslight him. Even in the update, where they had the long conversation about their relationship, she gaslit him again by saying "I just wanted to record your happiness." No this was about her being popular on social media. She just didn't respect him. It was a tough lesson, but it was better that he learned it now, then after a marriage and a couple of kids.

Breaking belongings is a huge dealbreaker for me. I had to witness my bio dad breaking mine and my mother's belongings when he was in a rage. I lost my entire Christmas Nutcracker collection because of this, along with him deciding to sell our belongings to get cigarettes. If I had a partner that did what Liz did to anything of mine, it would have been a huge deal and Liz would be gone. No way would I tolerate that shit. I'd even force her hand and get me a new PS4 and since it was for social media, I suspect she filmed it and posted it to social media. Even most teenagers know that this is wrong. So why is it that Liz as a grown 26 year old thinks that this is funny? ETA: So girlfriend got a PS5, but still decided to destroy the old gaming system? I feel that the video that Liz and Kat got inspired from was edited and the boyfriend in that video knew what was going to happen because girlfriend in that video probably asked him if she could destroy it. Liz should have known better. Still a dealbreaker, though.

For the second story, I get it, I don't like confrontation at all either. However, the roommate was sexually harassing the guy and that should NOT have been allowed to continue, period. At first it was creepy, and then it was harassment. Not okay. Also, anyone who deliberately makes others uncomfortable just for "lols" is not a good person to have around. It's immature and shows how little they give a shit about anyone else. Not friend material, not roommate material, not "in my bubble" material. When you don't call these people out for it, consistently, they are being enabled to be assholes. It's the same story as the "I'm just a brutally honest person" or "It was just a jOKe" bullshit; no, you're just an asshole. Call it out for what it is, and don't sugarcoat the behavior. I've zero interest in gaming and zero gaming skills. Even I know you don't just break an older console despite purchasing a new one. Especially with the reverse compatibility aspect of older PS models. It shows a total lack of respect, and forethought on OPs girlfriend, that she couldn't take a god-damned second to think anything through. That kind of impulsive behavior and lack of accountability is the kind of thing you shouldn't have to negotiate and ask for in a relationship. Good riddance to that waste. The trash took itself out. Especially considering backwards compatibility and not every game gets re-released for the next Console you’re still gonna need your previous one. Not to mention all the saved data that’s on the destroyed console. Especially since the hard drive was destroyed….. If he went to grab her favorite make up palette and took a screwdriver completely destroying it, then wiped out a brand new one that didn’t have the same colors she will probably be angry and think about the destroyed pallet. (The comments phone example was a better example) ……When I heard devil may cry I cringed, those games are not exactly the easiest to beat and 100% completing them is a massive pain. “Why can’t you do it on the new system“ The same reason why you can’t give him another hundred hours to his lifespan. The fact that they edited the video and posted it online…… Wtf. That seems like something a 15-year-old would do, not a woman that’s pushing 30. Honestly it’s not overreacting/irrational to break up with someone that destroys your personal property. It doesn’t matter what the intention is, it’s just blatant disrespect. My fiancé has poured hundreds of hours into saves on his system, too, and I can't imagine anyone EVER ruining that for him. When he plays a single-player game I sit nearby and help. Even when he plays 'alone', we play together. Even I see tons of value in his saves. I can't imagine what OP is going through and I'm not even 3 minutes into the video. I really hope he dumps her. I thought the girlfriend tried to show OP the original video that inspired her to copy it, but am I wrong? Did she try to show him the actual thing she did to him, the video she made of him, and his horrified expression? That seems almost sadistic to me. Like making a video of someone breaking up with someone else, and showing that video to the person who got dumped. I'm glad OP is out of that relationship. If the ex-GF wasn't mature enough at 27 to know better than to break someone else's belongings, she probably won't ever be. I really hope OP can get his love of gaming back eventually, though I can only imagine how devastated he is. And I hope she learned a lot from this too and stops being such a crap human being.

Story 1: I'm deeply disappointed with how people are, as someone who enjoys her games and is super protective of them so yeah i can understand why he's upset. (Though op tried to save his progress with his bud and failed that adds up to my disappointment) But destroying something someone loves just to replace it with something better and new doesn't fix the damage done, his gf had a friend (Kat) who knew it was a s**t move and didnt attempt to change her friend's mind and didn't do her bf the same way bc she KNEW yet didn't do anything about it but record it.

"i don't understand why you're upset i destroyed the car you spent 5 years and hundreds, if not thousands, of hours rebuilding by hand. Look at the new car I bought you!" life advice: don't destroy stuff that isn't yours. just stop it. juvenile af. I'd break up too.

You're very welcome. It can be hard to believe for sure but I also like(probably bad way to phrase this!) that these stories do remind of there is events happening like this.

Story 1: This boils my blood. You can't get those hours back and no, it's not so simple as "just do it again". Trying to get back that investment is painful from beginning to end. For instance, i once lost my copy of Monster hunter 3 Ultimate for 3DS. I bought another copy thinking i could just pick up where i left off. Turns out 3DS games save to the cartrige, so my data was lost forever. I tried to "just do it again", but i was burned out and walked away after just a few hours. Screw people that do this crap for ANY reason.

I love keeping the older consoles. I’ve done it with every console I’ve had. DS, 3DS, Xbox one, Xbox 360 (R2D2 one), switch, PS4, Game boy. I have never destroyed it and if someone even thought about destroying my old console I would flip. I would cry. I’ve collected these over the years and have seen the price rise in some of them. I hate how the GF didn’t understand the time and effort that goes into those games. I’ve played a lot of them (The Witcher 3 took me hours to complete and I literally cried when the power went off and I hadn’t saved it, I had to do a certain task over again). I hope the guy gets back into gaming. Hope he finds the passions again. (I stopped, and still haven’t, played Minecraft since one of my worlds that took me hours got destroyed. I’ll one day get back into the game but for now I can’t because all my hard work is gone) (I’ve been playing the Resident Evil video games instead)

I suppose it’d be okay if she had gone in and made sure all his stuff is backed up in the cloud. Well not okay but forgivable. Nope. Not even then. She’s definitely too immature for a relationship and op is better off without her. I wish this hadn’t soured gaming for him so much.

The moment I read that she ripped it out of the wall and took a hammer to it, a part of me died. I have several consoles that have hours upon hours of gameplay on and would be devastated if I lost. I like going back to old saves to see what a younger version of me was doing at any given time. Each save has memories attached to it of what was going on around you or in the world in general. It's hard for some to understand and easy for them to write it off, but you NEVER touch a gamer's consoles. You wouldn't mess with stamp or crystal collections, why would you do that to a gamer?

Story 1. I'm sure a few of us would like to know where Liz lives, so we can go there and record us destroying her stuff. because its "funny". Just hearing it, I am so angry that I have gone completely still. So happy to hear that OP broke up with that fe-male (said the way Ferengi say it) Story 2: Sounds like the housemate tried to "steal" the BF. I've seen girls acting like this in my social groups. Usually the guy takes the bait and fools around with the girl, and then the GF is gaslighted. Either one of two things, it's a challenge (like your usual soap opera drama) that purely feeds their ego, or they are obsessed and have lost sight of reality. Either way, you need to remove that girl from your social circle.

As a gamer, I just can't imagine losing that much time and effort because someone destroyed my PS4 for a tiktok video. Some gamers collect consoles, they like being able to go back and play on those consoles. Geez break up with her and download the video and sue her in small claims court.

I literally found out today that my old xbox one is broken (nobody destroyed it) and despite playing most my games on PC these days I am still kind of sad. I am also not looking to replace it with the newest model but instead with an older one so I can play all of my old games on it again. Glad OP broke up bad sad he lost his interest in gaming. If I imagine someone doing this to my PC I don't think I would handle it as well as OP. I would probably handle it really badly... I am talking about taking the hammer and committing a felony levels of bad handling...

This is not about a video console, this is about a new trend of atrocious behavior that should not be normalized. He is a human being with emotions and feelings, had the roles been reversed, someone would have recognized the abuse for what it is.

S1: The gf might not be malintent but she clearly is too stupid for her age of 26. To believe everything in social media is real. To be okay with destroying one's properties without permission. OP did fine to break up with her. She needs some lessons. As for OP, I'm sorry for him. It can be any period of time before he can get back to gaming. Give yourself time to heal.
