I have nothing but respect for this, and it's an humbling but enjoyable experience to watch. I don't get the impression that this is just to show off, like some (haters) claims. As a Brazilian who lives in Rio de Janeiro, I thought it was amazing how soon you visited an extremely dangerous place. Usually tourists only visit the "good part" and you look at the "dark side" of the places they visit, fully showing the day to day of those who are often not in the spotlight. Great video, represents our culture. One more subscriber.

As an American from Boston, I have come to know a LOT of Brazilians who have emigrated to the USA, as the Boston-area has one of the largest number of Brazilians in the entire US. Anyway, those that I have met from Rio would tell me that naive tourists see all the glamour of Copacabana Beach, and the mistake many make is they stray from Copacabana to just a block behind, and the safety factor is MUCH less than it was just a couple minutes earlier, and that tourists get in trouble a lot as a result.

Interesting to me that in the decades I watched mainstream television, no attempts were made by the BBC or its competition to portray favella inhabitants as human beings with the same hopes and fears as the rest of us. There have 100% been docs on the BBC and CBC depicting the inhabitants of the fevallas as being normal people just in extreme poverty surrounded by continuing violence, one where the followed one guy and his family who sell shirts. However they also have a responsibility not to fool dumb western travelers into thinking "oh let me just go there for a good cheap time, take some drugs, sleep with some prostitutes and enjoy the culture" because the reality is 70% will be get robbed 5% maybe killed.

Kurt really brings you with on a trip, meets and interacts with locals, strolls through the streets, visits homes and you just really get a good impression of the life in such incredibly dangerous and normally completely inaccessible areas of the world. It is because nobody dares to expose himself to such dangers, and is not able to look at everything from another perspective, that there is comparatively nobody like him. It is incredibly fascinating to see how the people adapt to live in such circumstances, from the electricity supply to the gunshots and self-regulated favelas. To help you guys from 1st world to measure the reality of this crazy tour: You can see Pablo's tension some parts of the video by doing the friend guide even though he lives in the area and know the people around there probably for a looong time (if he was a newborn on the neighborhood they woldn last 5 minutes). As a brazilian this gave me chills. Amazing content.

Keen observation, the bridge bit was a great example of that. Talked about how the criminals paid for the bridge to be built (obviously for more control alongside helping the community) but he has to just say that it was out of the kindness of their hearts since they were driving by. also the amount of times Kurt had to put the camera away was intense.

@@historynetwork852 Less than 50% of Brazil's population is white. So therefore, exploring and showing Brazilian culture and people that are not white, you consider that to be "fake brazil"? Nothing you wrote is entirely racist, but it's not exactly radiating tolerance and an open mind. There are white people in Brazil because of emigration from Portugal and other European countries. Just like there are 5 million white people in Africa because of former colonies. I pass no judgment on people who have emigrated in past generations or even colonized (with the brutality that usually involves), because it was not their doing, only their heritage. But I pass judgment on people who are negative towards other people in their own country or elsewhere because of the color of their skin.

Pablo was a great guide. He might have been the person in charge of the area, or close to it. I have a hard time imagining that the local groups would be cool with him leading around an outsider, if Pablo didn't have some considerable connection to them. Maybe he's just a relative, of someone high-up. Kurt, was dapping everyone up, showing nothing but respect to everyone he met. He also put his head down, everytime he was asked to. You have to give respect to get respect. I get the feeling that this video was made due to that kind of mutual respect being established before hand. This didn't come across as a propaganda piece at all. More of a really honest "check out my neighborhood" this is where I'm from, and what it's like video. Really appreciate Pablo, and you sharing it with everyone. Much love to you, and all the people out in Zona Norte, doing the best they can with what they got.

@@DiegoHernandez-id6pe I don't know about Brazil, the other places I do know about though... Wouldn't let a stranger walk around a hot area like that video taping stuff that could potentially get them killed by the police or rival gangs, off the word of an unafiliated hoodie. Not everyone likes everyone, even if you live in a small town, or tight knit community. I highly doubt that just anyone who lives there could act as a guide like Pablo did without running into some trouble. Don't buy it. I'm not saying he has to be directly involved in anything either. He has to be well known, and well liked by every single group patroling there though. Otherwise they would both get blasted. Pablo is straight up telling people it's cool that this stranger is video taping, both during and right after a gun fight. Dude has some cred. Not anyone in the favela can do that.

It's just not how it works man, Pablo had no connections or nothing crazy, he was just respectful and not dumb. As he said, it's a community, and respect and boundaries go a long way. If you are born there or known by the community you are treated with respect, most of the times. But it's still a sort of a complicated situation, because the gang members (bandidos) are still cruel and unfair sometimes, but they still help the community a lot, sometimes too, people get caught in the middle of things and get treated as hostages, just like they did (especially in occasions where there is a fight or invasion going on). An example of that, is when a person who is not from that "favela" or area drives in a danger zone by accident or not knowing the correct entrance protocol (especially when there is a fight or invasion going on). They're probably going to get shot at. Favelas are the biggest communities in Brasil (they're small cities), things run a lot different here from other places around the world.
