People in place that don't get snow, as well as young drivers and generally unhinged drivers(we have a lot of both here in Iowa), act like such idiots, and will often go faster in snowy and icy conditions than they normally would in clear conditions, just because they feel like it. And to nobodies suprise, they get in crashes. For reference, I drive a light, lowdown car, and I still have to apply the brakes a bare minimum of 3 seconds before a lot of people in places without snow would even consider the idea of slowing down, and it can be worse(3 seconds may seem like a small amount of time, but vehicles going at the speeds I go normally take just barely over a second to stop after the brakes have been applied). People with SUVs just straight up cannot stop in time, making it all the more infuriating that they are the most common type of vehicle here, and just being terrifying for all parties. I've actually had a case where at least a good 5 seconds passed and my car was still moving, having traveled around a block since I started applying the brakes, and bringing me right up to, or seemingly slightly jutting into the busy road ahead, with me backing up as soon as possible, and only narrowly avoid getting hit by a truck. And that was with me going ~23 to begin with. Snow is no joke.

This would have never happened in Germany and I tell you why. In Germany people have to do 2 seperate exams to get the drivers license, also it takes a minimum of 30 hours of pure driving to be accepted for the driving exam. Furthermore we learn how to do what is called a Rettungsgasse and when there is an accident everyone uses their warning lights to signal to slow down. Then also when an accident happens and you get the chance as the driver, you have to put up reflecting triangle on the road 200m from the accident so people know somethings ahead and they need to watchout. Also, as soon as someone would have an accident people would turn their fucking engines down and stop in front to help and so nobody can pass and you have a clear warning sign with a still standing car that has flashing lights on. Its called unterlassene Hilfeleistung or Fahrerflucht to just carry on and drive away, which equals, failure to provide help and can be fined with imprisonment.

As a German I'm speechless, first thing we learn in the exam with accidents on the autobahn is to get behind the barrier, second to warn the oncoming traffic and third to help people in need. This whole mess would have been avoidable.
@ColeSpolaric3 жыл бұрын
Sadly, that wouldn't have been enough. These people most likely aren't paying any attention to the road. They are most likely paying attention to their phones. Things like this in LA are so rare that you never even really consider them as a possibility. You’re kind of focused on other hazards. Traffic is usually so dense that there’s almost no chance anything would be stationary on the freeway. If there’s an accident, traffic comes to a halt. This situation where there’s an accident and traffic is still moving? Yeah, this doesn’t happen. When you live somewhere that has more intense weather and/or significantly less traffic, you are then much more aware of things like this being a possibility because it’s not uncommon. When I’m in a town where it’s snows and it’s winter, I’m extra vigilant of stopped cars and road conditions. In LA, my mind is focused on other drivers way more than road conditions, because the road conditions are 99.99% fine.

Less than 2 minutes later a snowplow driver not paying attention rammed into the back of his truck (no trailer) at 60+mph, totalling both vehicles. @m33r613 жыл бұрын
none of the cars turned on their hazard lights so the initial crash could have easily been avoided by doing that, assuninghis hazards were working. if so that is blatantly irresponsible on the first drivers part because it's very hard to tell a car is stopped when only one light is on because you can't as accurately perceive its depth. this is why they tell you not to turn in front of a car with one light out since you can't tell how fast it is traveling

And this is in one of the better driving American cities! Driving all over this country is just horrible. Californians think they have horrible drivers, clearly they've never been to DC, Boston, Miami, Baltimore, Nashville. Midwestern cities like Chicago or Detroit are much like this, where people seem to be staying in the lines, using turn signals, and following the rules, but in reality they're speeding more then they can actually handle because everyone else on the road is, not paying attention, and if a crisis like this happened they wouldn't know what to do any better than the drivers in this video. Drinking and driving or drugged driving is very very common, we pretend like it's some sort of social taboo but really the vast majority of people coming back from a party do it. Nobody actually calls Uber, and the host can't stop them if they just walk out the door unannounced. And they get away with it until they don't. They can stay within the lines and stop for red lights, but put an unexpected situation in front of them and they'll just crash without even trying to brake. After dinnertime, a double-digit percentage of drivers on the road are drunk, later at night it goes up to like a third.

@@PrinceJJGoated yes it would obviously be visible there's literally a guy shining a spotlight at the cars when people are crashing into them...others saw it and slowed or got out of the way 100%... they were horrible drivers 100% distracted probably changing the song on their playlist or texting their friends they otw to the party...

Hey folks: Did you know that the best thing you can do when spotting an accident like this is to turn on your hazard lights, even if you are not stopping at the accident?
@spunkycat61443 жыл бұрын
YES, but NO ONE, not even the guy with the spotlight did so, if he did, we would see the lights.

No! Hazzard lights on the right side of the road and that first disabled car one lane left side away from HOV confuses by drawing eye attention to the right instead of ahead and/or to the left where nothing is clear to see with lighting.

This is a clear example of how reckless people drive here. This the second time I seen an accident like this in LA. These people weren’t paying attention there’s no excuse when you got somebody pulled over with a spotlight pointing at the original wreckage to alert people to the accident

No alarm-light on? Why and why are there no boards to stop the traffic?
