I agree, but it's not that they cannot stop in that mile of clear vision and multiple lanes. It's that they've got their cruise control set at a speed that is more appropriate for dry summer roads and they're distracted by whatever it is they do when they should be watching and reading the road. I used to have tractor trailers and you would be shocked and amazed if you could see what I have seen people doing while their vehicle rockets down the road. Obviously there's the people texting, there's people doing hair and makeup, there's people shaving, eating, reading books, watching or making movies/videos, there's vehicles full of people and they're partying like they're at a club, there's the ones who stretch out with their legs on the passenger seat and they even nod off for a little nap and, of course, there's always the folks engaged in some form of sexual activity that involves only them or another person and sometimes there's a full-on orgy goin' on. I have seen all of that and more from up in my seat lookin' down on passenger vehicles. Then, all of a sudden, they're on top of an accident scene with no time to do anything but become part of it. Of course they say "Oh, it must have been black ice." or "It came outta nowhere. There was no warning." and everybody knows it's bullshit. I absolutely agree david beckenbaugh there are many motorists who are too stupid/ too immature/ too irresponsible and too many other things to have a driver's license. After reading a bunch of the comments, I had to come here and make another post. I used to work for a tow truck company and I am reading a lot of comments about why the first three cars didn't pull out of the road. After watching the video I have come to this conclusion. First thing I noticed is that since there was already a rescue going on with the flipped over car in the beginning the police was there and he must not of told them to move their cars or they would have been moved out of the way. This tells me the cars were disabled and could not of been steered out of the road. The second reason I think that is because at the end they were using mostly flatbed tow trucks that are more expensive because they are used for recovery of vehicles that can't use their own wheels to be towed any distance. We always advised if you are not able to move your vehicle off the road, or if it is leaking fluids to get out of the car and stand away from your vehicle in case it does get hit by people not paying attention and who loses control of the vehicle due to fluids on the road. These people could of broken tie rods or something else could of went wrong with steering in order for them not to be able to get the cars off the roads. You cant put blame on them for the other drivers who were not paying attention and plowed into them. What ever happened to having flairs in the trunk to light and lay on the roads to warn other drivers of an accident ahead?? That old tradition should be brought back!!!!!!

To be fair to some of them one of the challenges can be who's the leader. Sometimes it's impossible to know what's going on down the road if multiple vehicles are in front of you. If you're just following along with the pace of traffic your assuming if anything was bad they'd slow down too. But then you get people like that truck who don't slow down and reduce the reaction time of everyone else. If the bridge is frozen over but the road connecting to it is not, your not aware of the danger until to late. On top of that even if you had an idea what was going that truck and then that white van completely rearranged the pile up. All in all I agree drive slower and understand how your vehicle handles. If you see something ahead then slow down not just for your safety it also signals to everyone behind you too.

Now, it’s not uncommon for someone to follow me at one to two lengths at 80 mph. My job as a route delivery guy took me to several ski resorts. While I certainly had the training and experience to navigate in extreme conditions, the number of times I dialed 911 for a wreck scene, pulled cars out of the ditches and convincing people to go the hospital bcuz their head was bleeding, was unbelievable. The temperature would force most, I think, to stop and do something. Waiting for a wrecker on a rural snow covered road was an issue. I think those drivers who were convinced with over-hyped ads touting their vehicles' ability to do anything, believed that slowing down wasn't necessary. 15 years on that route: 12 wrecks, 2 dead, 8 hospitalized. All of these drivers need to slow down and pay closer attention to the road, thats the main issue, but also it seemed like the initial accident on the westbound lanes wasn't serious enough to not pull the vehicles involved off of the road, at least to me. That's definitely part of the problem. Just last night on Central there was an accident blocking the right lane, but I couldn't see that because there was an SUV in front of me (I drive a sedan), until they slammed on the brakes and swerved around them. Because I was keeping an appropriate following distance and wasn't speeding, I was able to stop thankfully. When I was able to get around them, I observed the damage on the car blocking the lane wasn't that serious and they could've at least gotten onto the shoulder. Please, if you get in an accident, pull your car off to the side if you can, and more importantly, drive safely in the first place.

@@tvdinner325 Not trying to be “that guy”, but the term common sense doesn’t need to be revised - it needs to be understood in the first place, and almost nobody understands what “common sense” actually means. “Common” is an adjective that modifies the meaning of the noun “sense”. It therefore refers not to all sense, but specifically to the sense that people develop from “common” experiences. If you live in Canada, it’s common sense to put on a coat before going outside in the winter. But what if you were born and raised in a desert and had never experienced a cold day in your life? Cold weather in that situation wouldn’t be a common experience for you, and so you wouldn’t have the sense to put on a coat before going outside in the winter. So generally speaking, what someone usually lacks when they “lack common sense” isn’t sense itself, but rather the common experiences that lead to developing that particular sense. No one is born knowing to put on a coat before going outside in the winter in Canada. No one “has” common sense - they develop common sense by having what are colloquially considered common experiences. But just because an experience is “common” doesn’t even mean that every person will have had that experience, so not everyone will have that particular “common sense”. As G.I. Joe would say, “now you know, and knowing is half the battle.”

@@Rock-Bottem1982 The fact that you think 'escape lanes' is even a thing suggests you have no idea what you are talking about. If people are having to swerve rather than stop then the situation is already unacceptably dangerous, and the road needs to be closed. That's before you even consider that there were first responders on the road. The red car stopped up the road and put their hazards on, protecting the casualty and first responders. They then block the road with the possible intention of causing traffic to stop, making traffic tail back and meaning people will have to slow down BEFORE the ice. The van smashing open another route through meant it didn't work, but in that scenario stopping traffic is the only safe option. I can't say with any certainty what people's motivation was, but don't insult them by assuming they were stopping to watch just because you can't think of anything useful to do. Even if you disagree that it is useful, you can't know what they were thinking. Yes they could have avoided becoming part of it. The red car in particular could have driven straight by and let that pickup take out a casualty and 2 first responders. The pickup at 0:15 could easily have been in the right lane unable to get out were the red car not blocking that lane. Maybe there could have been less wrecks, but there also certainly could have been fatalities. Don't assume that you are aware of all the outcomes avoided by the actions people took that you don't understand, and don't assume it couldn't have been much worse. People put their vehicles and themselves at risk to reduce the risk overall. As is, despite a casualty on a highway after a huge stretch of ice, there were no fatalities. You can either call that a miracle, or accept that people made that happen by thinking about what they could do, and accepting risk to themselves to protect others.

@@TehButterflyEffect I disagree. You have to judge by when the brakes were applied and how fast they were going.
